ent AIOT-A ent AIOT-A TGIF The Post and The Evening Times, Friday, December 7, 1984-151 Producers- Continued from page 14 Simpson spent much of his youth at the movies rebelling against his upbringing. "I've been going to the movies literally since I was 10," says Simpson. "Movies became my religion. The movie house literally replaced church in my life." Simpson got both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Oregon and landed in California as a starving writer. That's where he met Bruckheimer and they became roommates.

Simpson abandoned acting and writing for the business end of entertaining and eventually became head of Paramount's worldwide production offices. As executive producer her oversaw a string of hits and near hits including the sequel to "The Bad News Bears," "American Gigolo," "Urban Cowboy," "Little Darlings," "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "48 HRS." "I am Mr. Outside, Don is Mr. Inside," says Bruckheimer describing their delineation of duties. Simpson, on the inside putting the package together, works with the writers, gathers up the cast and makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Bruckheimer concentrates his energies on the outside and then steps back. "Jerry has an ability like no one else to crew a picture," says Simpson. "He knows just who's good at doing what." "We do argue," says Bruckheimer laughing softly, "but we respect each others "It's a tacit game we play," says Simpson guffawing. "If you can convince me you're right, then you've won." Jerry Bruckheimer The idea for "Beverly Hills Cop" had been knocking around in their collective heads for several years and they considered two other leading men before they decided on Murphy. Originally the role was slated for their friend Mickey Rourke, but before the project got underway there was not even a script at that time Rourke was offered the lead in "The Pope of Greenwich Village." Paramount then offered the part to Sylvester Stallone.

That did not work either because the studio and Stallone had differences over the script. Then came Murphy who after the success of "48 had signed a five-picture, $15 million contract with Paramount. "Eddie is terrific," says Simpson resorting to what seems to be his favorite adjective. The next project for Simpson and Bruckheimer is called "Top Guns" due out next Christmas. The movie will be based on a California magazine article about young naval fighter pilots.

"Those kids," says Simpson, think- SCRUMPTIOUS CHAMPAGNE INVADES 391st BOMB GROUP West Palm Beach-Allies of West Palm Beach's popular speciality restaurant were delighted to learn the 391st is introducing an exciting Champagne Brunch Buffet to its menu.
