Elsie Monthei, 45, and her daughter, Amy, 18, both of 1304 39th were born with cataracts. The lenses of their eyes were removed during infancy. Although both have some sight, they are legally blind and have difficulty seeing detail at any great distance.

But the disability has not prevented them from pursuing art careers, using a variety of mediums in painting, drawing and other visual arts. "Sometimes I will see things that other people don't see," said Amy Monthei, who has exhibited work at the Iowa State Fair, Capital Square and the Des Moines Convention Center. "Sometimes my imagination automatically puts detail in because I've been an artist all my life." Art doesn have to be equated with a photograph," added Elsie Mon thei, who says landscapes are among her favorite subjects. Both have achieved some success, selling works on commission and taking part in exhibits and competitions. Contest Winner Amy Monthei won a citywide Fire Department poster competition last year.

Two of her works appeared in Kotu, Japan, as part of a national high school cultural festival in August 1330. i Amy Worthen, a well-known Iowa artist, says Amy Monthei shows promise. "She has some very interesting drawings," said Worthen, who selected some of Amy Monthei's work to be displayed at the Kofu festival. Both mother and daughter play down their success. "I think just having (art) shown is important," Elsie Monthei said.

Her daughter added: "When I do something, it's not just a pencil sketch; it's part of me. When a person looks at that work, or I sell it, I'm giving part of myself away. When that person likes it, I get that little part back and it can be regenerated." Llsie Monthei was born in High Valley, Idaho. two-room house in a mill housing project. After she graduated from Boise State University, she taught elementary school in a one-room school for a year. She married Arlo Monthei, an Iowan, and the two moved to Iowa in 1971. Along with Amy, the couple have two other daughters, Paulette, 15, who is blind and writes poetry, and Lee, 22, who is sighted and aspires to be a commercial artist. Adult Education Elsie Monthei began to explore her interest in art in adult education courses a few years after she arrived in Des Moines.

In Idaho, art study "was not something I was encouraged to do," she said. In 1984, she took courses at Drake University to recertify for teaching and focused on art. Unlike her childhood teachers, her professors at Drake encouraged her, she says. Also in 1984, she found work at Very Special Arts Iowa, a non-profit organization that provides arts experiences for children and adults with disabilities or special needs. "My work with Very Special Arts has been two loves, because it's in the rehabilitation area and the art area, too," Elsie Monthei said.

Today, she serves on Very Special Arts Iowa's board of directors and on an Iowa Arts Council panel that reviews artists who will teach across the state. She is regional chairwoman of the Independent Living Division of the National Rehabilitation Association and works full-time as a rehabilitation specialist at the Iowa Department for the Blind. She teaches braille, cane travel and Amy Monthei also works with Very Special Arts. "I go to schools and talk to kids not only about my art work, but about my disability," she said. She also took part in Camp Any-town, a leadership camp.

She graduated last year from Roosevelt High School and now is a student at the Iowa Department for the Blind. Amy Monthei plans to attend Grand View College next year to study art, with a minor in business or education. Eventually, she says, she would like to write and illustrate children's books or perhaps start a greeting card business.
