North Stanton street KE 3-1467 quire) may flay the carcass' the skin of which artificially dressed will make admirable gloves for ladies and summer boots for fine gentlemen" Even though Swift was an acknowledged master of satire when he wrote modest in 1729 there were earnest humorless readers who took him at his word They were incapable of grasping his anguished and bitter irony and his rage at the plight of the destitute Irish And in one way or other they were all for eating the Dean Dander Up Although as a satirist I cannot touch the hem of Dean robe nonetheless a good many readers have been roasting and eating me since I wrote my modest proposal for solving the medical problems of our senior citizens of whom I shall eventually be one My modest proposal was that we dispose of all oldsters in a modern and humane counterpart of the old Eskimo custom of driving tribal elders who could no longer hunt and help support the tribe out on an ice floe to die That solution as I pointed out would not only do away with the need for Medicare or any other medical program for the aged but would also make social security unnecessary I wrote that column after my dander had gone into orbit when I read that 200 New Jersey doctors had pledged themselves not to care for okl people under the King-Anderson bill if it is passed I'm not certain the King-Anderson bill is the plan the country needs but the idea that doctors would strike against old men and women sick and in need of care outraged me Well sir a good many readers are furious because they didn't grasp the satire and took me seriously But come what may including another ton of sir: you letters I suppose I shall someday get mad enough to try satire again Even with the Irish in full cry on his trail the Dean cure himself of the habit and I'm afraid I either Two hundred and thirty years ago Dean Swift enraged a sector of his reading public with an essay entitled Modest Proposal" This essay long since of the most famous in the language had a much longer subtitle to wit: "For preventing the children of poor parents in Ireland from be-i a burden to their parents or country: and for making them beneficial to the public" What follows was and still is one of the most deadly satires ever written The dean was enraged by the terrible poverty suffering unemployment and general misery among large segments of the Irish His "modest" proposal to alleviate these conditions follows in part: "I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London that a young healthy child well-nursl is at a year old a most-delicious nqurishtng and wholesome food whether stewed roasted baked or boiled: and I have no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricasse or Master of Satire Swift therefore proposed that annually 100000 infants of the destitute and unemployed "at a year old be offered in sale to the persons of quality and fortune through the kingdom always advising the mother to let them suck plentifully in the last month so as to render them plump and fat for a good table A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends and when the family dines alone the fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish and seasoned with a little pepper and salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day especially in winter "I have reckoned" searing essay continued a child Just born will weigh 12 pounds and in a solar year if tolerably nursed increateh to 28 pounds "Those who are more thrifty (as I must eonfess the times re CAMP SCENERY A view of the scenery from Villa Madonna camp
