Sulfuric acid leaks at ADM facility Associated Press Clinton, la. A leaking valve on a storage tank led to a spill of sulfuric acid at an Archer Daniels Midland plant over the weekend, the Clinton DES MOINES Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported. Some of the acid flowed into a collection drain that leads to the Mississippi River at Beaver Channel. The acid was immediately diluted to safe levels, officials said. Al Goldberg, supervisor of the department's Washington office, said no environmental damage was expected.

Jonathan Memmer, 24, arrived at the Johnson County Courthouse with his characteristic beard and head of thick, dark hair shaved off. Memmer declined to answer ques tions while walking from a Sheriffs Department van into the courthouse. He was wearing leg shackles, prison-issue jeans and a denim jack et Memmer is accused of killing Laura Dalton, 29, of Creston and Mana Lehner, 27, of Belton, Mo, Authorities said the women, who did not know each other, died of head mjuries. Officials found their bodies when they responded to an explosion and fire at an Iowa City apart ment March 19. Police allege Mem mer used gasoline to set the apartment on fire to hide the slay- ings and destroy evidence.

Memmer spoke only to answer simple procedural questions from a judge Wednesday. His court- appointed attorney, Edward Leff, declined comment after the brief hearing, as did Johnson County Attorney J. Patrick White. Wednesday's was the first in what probably will be a string of hearings before Memmer goes to trial. An arraignment, at which Memmer will enter a formal plea, has not been set.

Prosecutors have gathered eye witness accounts, DNA and other evidence they say links Memmer to Dalton, Lehner and the scene of the crime. Police wanted to talk with Mem mer almost immediately after the bodies were discovered. He was arrested in Iowa City a week after the fire for violating his probation on a 1998 car burglary conviction. He is serving five years at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. Dr. Gerald Wieneke, who died of cancer a year ago at age 50, earmarked the gift for the col- lege's Smith Wellness Center.

A spokesman for the estate said the total gift would exceed $1 million. Interest on the money will be used to offset operating expenses, he said. The wellness center com-' bines a city and college library, fitness and recreation facilities and a municipal indoor swimming pool. Member fees cover operating expenses of the $4.3 million, facility. Wieneke first contributed to the faculty in 1995, pledging $25,000 to co-sponsor the rac-quetball court bearing his name and the name of fellow physician, Dr.

Frank Vetri, college officials said. Official's remark draws suspension Associated Press Cedar Rapids, la. The director of the Linn County Health Department has been suspended for a week without pay for making inap-propriate comments to a female employee. The Linn County Board of Health also decided that Keith Erickson must write a letter of apology to the woman and attend sensitivity training. Marty Ralston, the department's assistant director, and Tom Hart, a supervisor, will also receive written reprimands and sensitivity training.

Erickson will lose $1,405 in pay, according to county records. He said he regretted the incident. Hart was reprimanded for "inappropriate comments to a department employee," board chairman Paul Hasley said. Ralston was reprimanded for "his participation in the conversation." The woman who filed the complaint, Tiffany Chamberlain, is a sanitarian for the department. She declined to comment about the penalties.
