Running started this country's fitness boom, and it is wonderful to see so many folks jogging and walking to improve their health. It's too bad more teen-agers don't John, David Lee Roth, Cher and Pee DEAR ANN: Over the years I have heard and read much about how to handle the problems of unwed mothers, their babies and their families. We now have a problem in our family and my mind has drawn a blank. Our son is 29 and in the service. He has had a baby with a women who is also in the service.

"Tom" and "Betty" were stationed at the same base, but Betty was transferred. At the time of the birth, Tom was able to take leave and be with her. He called and advised us of the event. We know he has been sending money for the boy's support although she did not demand it. Betty remains in the service and receives fringe benefits.

Do we have any role in this? Should we tell our friends and relatives? Do we write to Betty? Should we send a gift? They had not considered marriage before but are now discussing it. It occurred to us that Tom did not have to call and tell us about this because he and Betty are "on their own." Our son is a great guy, and we love him a lot. In a recent letter he said he hoped Wee Herman. On Friday: Whoopi Goldberg, Ted Danson, Air Supply and this didn't change our opinion of him. Imagine as though anything could change our love for our son.

Despite warnings from my mother and grandmother that a friend of my grandmother's sister dyed her hair and it seeped through to her brain and she became squirrelly, I decided to use a little color. I have not seen my real roots since. At one time or another my hair has matched each of my three children, Maureen O'Hara, Grace Kelly, Debby Boone, Ann-Margret, Cher, Tina Turner and Dick Clark.

It depends on what stage I'm going through and the aura I wish to create. On the other hand, why shouldn't I let my hair come in natural? Does John Forsythe run around with henna-dyed fingernails for three days out of every month? Does Cary Grant have to stay out of a strong wind so his hair won't part and reveal his roots? And I'll bet Merv Griffin never had to leave the hospital early after surgery because his roots were surfacing.
