rr TT DES MOINES SUNDAY REGISTER 0 November 8, 1987 5D Walden won't pick winner for Huskers-Sooners tilt 1 T' 'V' Vrl' T'' 1 n' Individual Statistics NOTEBOOK RUSHING LINCOLN, NEB. Coach Jim Walden and his Iowa State players have lost to them both, No. 1 Oklahoma by 56-3 and now No. 2 Nebraska by 42-3, but no one wants to go on re- ...,) cord as predicting the winner when two Big Eight superpowers collide here Nov. 21.

"I think it's going to be a tremendous football game," Walden said "They're blessed with jgreat, great talent. has maybe a little "belter team speed than I remember "when I was here. The difference could be that Nebraska is faster against Oklahoma's wishbone than it's previously been. "Can the speed of Nebraska's defense offset the speed of Oklahoma's ''offense? That's the key question. I don't know if there is a clear-cut ''favorite, I really don't.

"I think it's going to boil down to which one of them does the most ''things right. Which ever one kicks the ball around is going to lose the REUNION FOR WALDEN. Jim Walden spent Friday evening with his former coach, Nebraska Athletic Director Bob Devaney, and others with whom he worked when he was a Husker assistant coach under Devaney in 1969-72. The Iowa State coach and his wife, Janice, had dinner with a large group of husbands and wives that included Devaney, Don Bryant, Clete Fischer, Mike Corgan, Jim Ross, Paul Schneider and George Sullivan. All are present or past members of the Nebraska athletic staff.

AN IOWA WINNER. Quarterback Pat Jackson scored five touchdowns and passed for another in leading Waldorf Junior College of Forest City, to a 42-35 victory Friday over Nebraska's freshman team. It was the third loss in five starts for Nebraska, marking the first time in the 32 years that the Huskers have been playing freshman football that they were beaten three times in one season. Jackson is a 5-foot 9-inch, 172- Oklahoma has an outstanding freshman quarterback, Charles Thompson, who has seen considerable action this season. HENDERSON ALL RIGHT.

Joe Henderson, Iowa State's star running back, was sidelined with a shoulder injury late in the third quarter, but he said it's nothing serious. "I got hit in the first quarter," Henderson said, "and then I got hit again in the same spot. It's just a bruised shoulder." Henderson netted 67 yards in 21 carries and will have a chance to hit the mark at home Saturday against Kansas State. He has 906 yards for the year. LONG AND SHORT.

Iowa State punter Judge Johnston had his best kick of the season, a 55-yarder, but also his worst one that traveled only 5 yards into a strong south wind. "A wind like that is a punter's nightmare," Johnston said. "I dropped the ball a little too soon, and the wind carried it before I could kick it." pound freshman from Columbus, Ohio. He ran for 149 yards, passed for 55 and also scored a two-point conversion. SECOND HIGHEST.

Nebraska's 604-yard rushing total against the Cyclones has been bettered only once in Husker history. The 1982 team ran for 677 yards in a 68-0 victory over New Mexico State. Holy Cross wins behind Lockbaum WORCESTER, MASS. (AP) -Gordie Lockbaum scored a touchdown and passed for another as Holy Cross defeated Ivy League leader Harvard, 41-6 in a nonconference football game Saturday. Lockbaum had 205 total yards on offense and recovered a fumble while playing defensive back.

Nebraska did its share of kicking the ball around against the Cyclones, turning the ball over four times, a fact that didn't please Cornhusker Coach Tom Osborne. "I would really like to see our people execute a little better," Osborne said. "But we're glad to be 9-0. 1 think we'll play well against Oklahoma.

We might win big, or they might win big, but I don't think we have to go out and play the best game of our lives in order to win. "It will be interesting. I hope they are at full strength, and I hope Jamelle plays, and I hope we are at full strength." But the Sooners won't be full strength. They lost both Holieway and starting fullback Lydell Carr in Saturday's 29-10 victory over Oklahoma State. Losing a player of Holieway's caliber might cripple most teams, but BIG EIGHT Conf.

Fullback Erich Kissick rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown, and halfback J.J. Flanni-gan romped 53 yards for another score to lead the Buffaloes' charge. Colorado also used a trick play a pass by split end Lance Carl to halfback Eric Bieniemy on what started out as a reverse to score just before the half, giving the Buffs a commanding 24-3 lead. The Buffs set up that touchdown three plays earlier, sending split end Jeff Campbell on a reverse to the right side that gained 10 yards. Carl appeared to be executing the same play, but he stopped and threw back to the left side to a wide-open Bieniemy, who completed the 34-yard score.

Colorado's other scores came on a 31-yard field goal by Dave DeLine, set up by Kissick's 44-yard run, and a 52-yarder by Ken Culbertson. Mark Porter's 38-yard field goal with no time left was blocked by Kansas Saturday, leaving winless Kansas State and lowly Kansas locked in a mistake-filled tie. Kansas State, hoping to break a 13- game losing streak, recovered a fumble by Kansas quarterback Kevin Verdugo with 36 seconds left. The two hapless squads exchanged penalties, then Porter lined up for his 38-yarder with :03 to go.

It was not immediately known who to credit with the block. The sloppily played game left Kansas State with an 0-8-1 record and Kansas 1-7-1. Kansas appeared to have secured at least a tie when Clint Normore intercepted a Kansas State pass in the ene zone with 1:23 left. But Verdugo's fumble was recovered by Tim Mac-Donald to set up the dramatic end. Kansas and Kansas State came into the game near the bottom of most NCCA statistical categories.

Holieway and Anderson were the bright spots in a day that saw the Sooners move the ball well, but get stopped repeatedly by turnovers and an inspired Cowboy defense. The Sooners moved inside Oklahoma State's 20-yard line three times in (the first half and came away with only three points.

In the fourth quarter, Oklahoma drove to the Cowboy 18 before fum-bling the ball away, fi-Holieway, who had 116 first-half yards, scored on a 5-yard run around end on Oklahoma's first possession of the day. The score quickly fulfilled a team goal to make a touchdown in 19-0 victory over Oklahoma State last year, the offense had failed to get into the end zone. "We probably should have had another 21 to 28 points, but I'm glad we didn't. I wouldn't want people to think we were trying to run up the score especially Jim Walden.

"Iowa State played well," Osborne added. "They gave a good effort and never quit. They have some athletes, but they don't have enough of them." The victory was Nebraska's 10th straight going back to the Sugar Bowl triumph over Louisiana State. The Huskers are 5-0 in Big Eight play, while Iowa State dropped to 1-4 in the -league and 2-7 for the season. -f4'V Busch thought he caught; the play was ruled incomplete.

Micah Heibel's 3-yard run soon made it 14-0. And when Iowa State's Tom Schulting fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, the game was on the verge of getting totally out of hand. Nebraska was unable to take advantage of that, spurning a field-goal attempt on fourth and 16 into the wind at the 25, and Iowa State took possession on its 18.
