4 says that an item of interest concerning the county budget is that the tax rate of $1.14 per $100 valuation remains the same as it has been for the past several years. The increase in valuations in the county is taking care of the gradual increase in operational expenditures. He says that the Commissioners Court does not give a specific raise or out but each department receives (in a lump sum) their portion of the budget. Then the department head distributes his share within his own budget as he sees fit. The Waller County Commissioners Court voted to approve the proposed budget which involved about a $25,785 increase.

Commissioner Stefka registered a "no" vote for the raise in commissioner's pay which was taken as travel expense. This item was listed as a $4500 increase. The Legislature had set $75 per month as the maximum allowed travel expense four years ago. The commissioner's salary is $100 per month plus expenses, such as phone, gas, notary, etc. At the budget hearing a large group from Waller protested lowering the Waller Teachers Honored With Reception Tonight at Katy The Katy and Addicks P-TA will host a teachers reception, tonight, Thursday, September 6, from 7:30 til 9:00.

Picutre courtesy Ft. Bend Mirror The spirit has been high on the squad and around town this week as the Tigers made final preparations for their first game of the 1962 season against the Navasota Rattlers at Navasota Friday. The Tigers will take on a new look this season with not only a wide open attack but dressed in new scarlet jerseys and white game pants. Vowing not to be impressed by these new uniforms are such Rattler performers as Jim Swanson, rugged linebacker, Mike Mason, nifty left-handed quarterback and Billy Patterson, 230 pound tackle. Kick-off time will be 8 p.m.

The Tigers were shuffled and reshuffled in the first two weeks of practice in an effort to place boys where they would be most effective on all offensive and defensive sets. Marked improvement was evident last week in three scrimmage games as personnel become more familiar with tlieir positions. The Tigers will probably be opening up with Rhodes and Haskett or Elder at the end positions. Rhodes, 6' l'J8 pound junior shows signs of developing into a H'reat pass receiver but has impressed the coaches more with his improved blocking and defense than anything else. Both Haskett and Elder missed some time during the first two weeks with injuries but appear to be in top shape now.

Haskett is best known for his downfield blocking while Elder excells in the pass catching department. At tackles the Tigers will have seniors Cooper and Schlottman backed up by Gorden and Fry. Both are experienced hands with Cooper a steady hand and Schlottman being most impressive on his blocking in the line. He also has the potential of developing into a vicious downfield blocker and defensive tackle or linebacker. Gorden saw a lot of service on the 15 sqiuul last year while Fry makes his bid from an impressive year in junior high.
