Four people have been bitten by the flying mammals in three weeks, but Dr. Foy McCasland, chief of the Bureau of Veterinary Public Health, said he has not noticed any significant change in the number of rabid bats diagnosed by the health department. Over the past five years, McCasland said, the number of diagnosed rabid bats has ranged from 79 in 1981 10 123 in 1982. Many of the bats have gathered under bridges across Town Lake near downtown and in the overhangs of buildings, officials said.

The football stadium on the University of Texas campus is a popular hangout for bats. Al Lundstedt, director of events for the men's athletic department at the university, described Memorial Stadium as "a bat roost all year long. We have a small colony that stays there all the time, and then we'll get another 10,000 to 20,000 this time of year when they migrate." Dr. Phil Zbylot, chief of community and preventive medicine for the Austin-Travis County Health Department, said, "If we drove them off, it may cause a worse problem in residential neighborhoods." About 2 percent to 3 percent of the bats are rabid this year, he estimated. A word of encouragement James Drake entreats his armadillo night of armadillo racing in Jacksonville, Fla.

Contestants were allowed to beg, yell and otherwise encourage bat not touch tbeir racers. The animals were released back into the wild after the race, and a portion of the money raised went to the Jacksonville Humane Society. Hurricanes, storms leave many homeless in Mexico address in your address book DEAR HELOISE: Your tip about keeping a duplicate copy of one address book was a great one, but let me add one important thing. Always write your own name and address in your address book, prefera bly inside the front cover. I speak from experience.

Several times I have found address books and it is like playing a detective game to try to return tbem. Some times, I have been so stumped that had to throw the address book away. Cambridge, Mass. HELOISE SAYS: How true! My hus band left his in a phone booth, never to be found. It was a major task to start a new one.

DEAR HELOISE: For years my bedboard has been a piece of press board about 30 by 48 inches. I do a great deal of sewing and like to cut out FR0I1 HELOISE I several things at the same time so they're all ready to be stitched. The re sult is a stiff and lame back. I took the bedboard out and put it on my ironing board with great results. I can walk around it, turn it and cut and hardly have to bend over at all.

It's the perfect height. I also use this when it comes time to wrap birthday or Christmas presents to avoid the bending over. As far as storage, it's no problem. In between the mattress and box spring it goes when I am finished. E.P.W.

DEAR HELOISE: When I am boil ing eggs I always save the water they were boiled in to put in my plant soil. I also save the egg shells and grind them up into the soil. This is a great addition to plant soil and will add nu trients to the plants. Hazel McCarry, DEAR HELOISE: Have you ever gone camping with friends, their chil dren and yours adding up to five or six youngsters? It usually ends up with only one extra double bed for all those kids. I have a simple solution.

Instead of the children sleeping lengthwise on a bed, let them sleep crosswise and you will be able to fit in a lot more. Of course this does make for a lot of giggling in the night, but crowded in bed is better than no bed at all. Lillian Havland DEAR HELOISE: Can you or your readers tell me if perfume and co logne can be kept in the refrigerator to keep them fresh? I have purchased some of my favor ites and want to preserve them until I need them. Thank you for the many household hints appearing in your newspaper column. LeMoyne Swiger HELOISE SAYS: The Fragrance Foundation suggests storing perfume in a cool, dark place.

They don't actu ally recommend refrigeration, but keeping perfume in the refrigerator probably is OK for a short while. Remember that perfume will change over long periods of time so wear those fragrances often. Don let them waste away in a closet somewhere. DEAR HELOISE: To zip up peanut butter, add bacon bits or dry roasted sunflower seeds to it. Great for sandwiches or with a sliced banana salad on a lettuce leaf.

Or just serve it off a teaspoon for the children's after-school snack. My kids call it a "peanut butter sucker." B.G.B. 1984 King Features Syndicate Inc. In the past few weeks, tropical fronts and storms in both the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico have blanketed most of the country with clouds and brought the heaviest rainfall since 1978, according to the National Weather Service.

Mexico City, which has had unusual ly heavy rain this season, has suffered "minimal effect from the rains, con sidering the size of the downpours," Mayor Ramon Aguirre told reporters. Flooded streets have caused numer ous heavy traffic jams. Danger of Collapsing Local press reports have said thou sands of houses on the fringes of the city are in danger of collapsing because their walls and roof have been weakened by water. Several rivers across the country have flooded in the past two weeks, sending tens of thousands of people to temporary shelters. Mario Lizaola, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said rivers had start ed to recede.

Odille, which broke up off the Guer rero coast this weekend, damaged an already battered area. Some 80 percent of the crops in the state of Guerrero have been damaged, said Jose Villicana, head of the state agricultural department Commercial flights to Acapulco, halted for two days, resumed Monday, but the airline terminal remained flooded by more than three feet of water.

Zihuatanejo and other towns along the coast still had no electricity Monday. The hurricane knocked down two high-tension towers Saturday night. The rainy season in Mexico normal ly lasts from June until mid-September. The popular tourist season at the coastal resorts traditionally starts in mid-November. (AP) Unions representing a third of Disneyland's employees voted to reject the company's latest contract offer Monday and authorized a strike against the amusement park, a union spokesman said. "The vote went 69.25 percent to reject Disneyland's last offer," said United Food and Commercial Workers spokesman Michael O'Rourke. He said 1,400 of the 1,844 union members whose contracts are being negotiated voted Monday, a week after they rejected the company's earlier proposed pay-freeze. When and how a strike might begin was not immediately announced. "Now the rank and file committee and the union leaders are meeting to decide when and where and how any economic action might be taken against the employer," O'Rourke said.

Union leaders had urged rejection of the company's offer because although it contained improvements over the offer a week ago, it still called for concessions, said union spokesman Bob Bleiweiss. It is yes. Enclosed is a clipping from our local paper (Laurel, Miss.) with a picture of a kid who has a live lizard hanging from each ear.

The boy says the lizards stay Clamped on until he removes them. He thinks it's a great idea because his earrings are unique and he doesn't have to have his ears pierced just bitten. Have you ever beard of anything so crazy in your entire life? Worried About Our Nation's Future ANN SAYS: When I was in college kids were swallowing goldfish. Our nation survived that nuttiness and I $uspect it will not perish because some kid in Laurel, has a couple of lizards hanging from his ears. I DEAR ANN: Two years ago our son told us he was gay.

We love him very much and let him know we were willing to accept him as he is. My husband find I are small-town, conservative people and this was not easy for us. This morning we received a letter from "Lee" telling us he would like to bring his friend home for a vacation. don't want to lose him but we just couldn't handle it. When we see Lee alone we don't think about his being different, but it would be traumatic for us if he were to bring his male lover home and share a room with him.

If we say he cannot bring the man here we will probably lose him, but if we say yes the situation will be unbearable. What advice can you offer? Upstate, N.Y. ANN SAYS: I suspect you have never seen Lee's friend and are dreading It. Is it possible to visit Lee for a weekend and stay in a hotel or motel? I be- DRIBS! 1 984 Lot Angeles Times Syndicate 'Compound helps Store kidneys 194 CMcea Tribune Kidneys stored before transplantation may be kept in top condition by pumping a special compound called adenosine through them while keeping them at cold temperatures, Dr. Folk-ert Belzer and James Southard of the University of Wisconsin's surgery department have found. Kidneys treated with the fluid had a greater capacity for resuming normal function once transplanted, thus reducing surgical complications of the procedure. UU2DERS lieve once you are in the company of your son and his friend and see that they behave no differently in public than other male companions, you will feel less terrified and apprehensive, Please give it a try.

DEAR ANN: My 16-year-old (6 foot-2) son just walked out of the house. I am sitting here with a heavy heart. In the last two days he has done the following: Cut a big hole in my best table cloth with a jackknife. Destroyed three ball point pens by breaking them in pieces. Took a hammer and pounded holes in my picnic bench.

He has been doing things like this ever since he was aJittle boy. I have begged him to come with me to mental health clinic but he says there is nothing wrong with him. In every other way he is a wonderful young man doesn't drink or do drugs, loves animals and has many friends. I wonder if he secretly hates me since most of the damage is done to my belongings. He has had no male role model since he was 3.

My other children are not destructive, nor am I. Please advise in the paper. He reads your column. -People Next? (Ore.) ANN SAYS: This angry boy needs to find out where his rage is coming from. You can't drag him to therapy, but I hope when he sees this letter he will agree to go.

It could head off real trouble. Good luck. 1 984 News Group Chicago Inc. Chronic injuries may be relieved DEAR DR. MOLLEN: I injured my Achilles' tendon eight years ago and since then it has been stiff and sore When I walk several miles it becomes extremely painful.

Why would it hurt for so many years? Bertha Phoenix, Ariz. DR. MOLLEN SAY: Even if an inju ry has been present for many years, you must not assume it is incurable or unbeatable. There are many chronic injuries that may be relieved with proper rehabilitation stretching exercises, heat and cold (referred to as contrast therapy), muscle stimulation and other physical therapy. I'd suggest consulting a sports physician who can outline a rehabilitation program for your chronic Achilles' tendinitis.

DEAR DR. MOLLEN: I'm 21 years old, 5 feet tall and weigh 102 pounds. I've never been particularly athletic, but have been taking aerobics and DR. ART MOLLEN weight training for the past three months. I'd like to start training for a mini-triathlon and would like some suggestions.

K.Q., Tucson, Arii. DR. MOLLEN SAYS: Most mini-triathlons require at least one hour per day of training. This should include 45 minutes of running three to four times weekly, bicycling for an hour two to three times weekly and swimming for at least 30 minutes, three times per week. Some triathletes can substitute upper-body weight training for swimming.

DEAR DR. MOLLEN: I heard that if I walk three miles daily and then do sit-ups as soon as I get home, I'll get twice the benefits from the exercise. In fact, this was referred to as spot re ducing. Is this true? Cheryl Mesa, Ariz. DR.

MOLLEN SAYS: This will not double the exercise benefits but sit-ups will tone your abdominal muscles, which the walking will not do. Walking will burn 100 calories per mile. Spot reducing is another fitness myth. You may tone and strengthen certain areas of your body through exercise, but there are no guarantees that only a specific area such as your thighs, waist or buttocks will be affected by the exercise. 1984 The Register and Tribune Syndicate Inc.

NE lion, 64114. MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (AP) -Hurricanes and other storms that have deluged most of Mexico in the past few weeks have left thousands of people homeless and Pacific resort hotels nearly empty, officials said. Hurricane Norbert was reported moving toward Baja California Monday. Tourism Secretary Antonio Enri-quez Savignac told reporters that the resorts of Acapulco and Ixtapa-Zihu-atenejo hit over the weekend by Hurricane Odille suffered the worst damage. Meteorologists said Hurricane Norbert was heading north Monday toward Baja California, the Mexican peninsula south of California.

Meteorologists, describing Norbert as "big and ugly," said it could affect the coastal states of Southern Baja California, Sinaloa and Nayarit, in northwestern Mexico. Winds of 140 MPII Norbert was 149 miles southwest of San Jose del Cabo at the tip of Baja California at noon Monday. The National Weather Service said it was packing winds of 140 mph and gusts as high as 165 mph. Hotels in Acapulco and Ixtapa-Zihu-atenejo, which are in Guerrero state, have suffered "substantial" losses, Enriquez Savignac said at a news conference Sunday. The president of the Hotel Association of Acapulco, Camilo Miranda, said hotels were only 5 percent full, 2 boys return owner angry, not glad LYNN, MASS.

(AP) Two boys who found $4,000 and gave it to police won praise and $5 rewards, but no thanks came from the money's owner, who complained angrily that "no one had the right to take her bag from the seawall," police said. Marc Norcross, 11, and Bekim De mirai, 12, found the money, mostly in $50 and $100 bills, in a shopping bag on the Nahant Beach seawall Saturday afternoon. The bag also contained a bathing suit, shampoo, toothbrush, pocketbook, passport and photos. "We couldn't take the money 'cause it wouldn't be right, and if we took it we couldn't spend it," Bekim said Monday. "I couldn't buy anything like a radio cause my mother would know." The boys turned the bag over to Metropolitan District Police, who told them, "You're probably gonna be re warded for this, Bekim said.

Instead, "the lady was mad," he said. "She was irate," said officer Frank Anderson. "She said no one had the right to take her bag from the sea wall." The bag's owner, 28-year-old Anna Maria Altamari, told police she had left it behind while she went on a two- mile jog, Anderson said. She had an unlisted East Boston number and could not be reached for comment Monday. The boys' good deed went unre warded until Sunday, when Marc's family found two letters on the door step from Lynn resident Jane Coles.

Each contained $5 for the boys and key chains with whistles and magnifying glasses attached. I don have much money, so I can only give you $5," Coles wrote, adding that the boys deserved "some recognition for being so helpful and honest." Coles, a 31-year-old programmer analyst for the General Electric Co. in Lynn, said the key chains, souvenirs from GE, "were the only things I had two of." "Whether or not they got a reward is not important," said Marc's mother, April. "They did the right thing turning the money in, and that's what's important." Tm so proud of him, added Marc's father, William, who lost his job as a computer operator with GE in Lynn two years ago. He knows the value of money be cause he had to work hard for it He shovels off cars in the winter for a few bucks; he cuts lawns in the summer, be has a paper route.

He even bought his own bicycle and radio." 1 1 Washington area..
