•t* At 84, "Pop" George Maynard feels his age is no handicap when it comes to shooting marbles. The boys agree too as they watch Pop demonstrate his skill at a marbles tournament in Tinsley Green, England. "Pop" is chairman of the British Marbles Board of Control. No, this is not an olden-day scene on the Mississippi river when stern-wheeler* t were in fashion. It's down in Colombia, South America, where the old-style boats have been plying the Magdalena River for more than half a century. Carrying both cargo and passengers, the stern-wheelers are the only means of transportation for much of a thousand-mile route. Upstream, the river become* narrower, giving the passengers a chance to get a close-up view of village life as the boat slowly glides past. Near the head of a glacier at 7500 feet, below the .summit of Mt. Olympus, in the state of Washington, ice has cascaded down the rock wall. The climbers move up cautiously toward the gaping hole between ice and rock to investigate. Thousands of well-wishers poured into the small German town of Reit Im Winkl in the Bavarian Alps to congratulate a retired lumberman -and his wife on their golden wedding anniversary. Nearly all their friends and relatives came in the national costumes of their home districts to add to the colorful celebration.
