Key-E: Exacala; Trifecta; Dally Double. AT LINCOLN Urbandale 1 gives aruce tough test By RICK BROWN Register Staff Writer CEDAR FALLS, IA. Earle Bruce returns to his birthplace Saturday, but he doesn't expect to receive a red carpet welcome. Bruce, Northern Iowa's new football coach, was born in Pittsburgh. At 6 p.m.

Saturday, his team will be a decided underdog when it plays at the University of Pittsburgh. "They didn't tell me we opened with Pitt when I took the job," Bruce joked Monday. Bruce spent the first 1 1 years of his life in Pittsburgh before his family moved to Cumberland, Md. Bruce's father played briefly at Pittsburgh, though he was better known for his semipro baseball and football career. "I can remember going to Pitt games when I was growing up," Bruce said.

"I even went to some after we moved to Cumberland." Underdog Northern Iowa is ranked eighth in the Division I-AA preseason poll, but it will be an underdog against one of the East's traditional powers. It has a $140,000 guarantee for playing the game. "Pitt, to be honest, is a little higher regarded team than we should probably be playing," said Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby. "Year in and year out, the Kansas States of the world are a little more our style." 7-ai fort Dodge St. Ed-mond: 14 Urbandale; 21-Southeast Polk; 2R JeKerson Amateur 1. Jon Brown, Urban dale, 66, 2. Jim Brown, Urbandale, Newton seems Central Iowa team to beat By RANDY PETERSON Register Start Writer Newton won its last Class 4-A high school football playoff championship in 1980 with a 28-14 final-game victory over Bettendorf Eight years later, the Cardinals appear to be well-stocked enough to start thinking about ringing the victory bell again. Ten starters returning from last year's 8-2 outfit bolster hopes for the Cardinals' immediate future.

If that's not enough, then there are juniors from an 8-2 sophomore team of 1987 to fill the gaps. Included among the experienced cast is third-team all-state running back Chad Guthrie, a preseason all-state selection in 1988 by The Des Moines Register. The 6-foot 1-inch 190-pounder rushed 130 times for 1,082 yards and scored 16 touchdowns a season ago for Coach John Jenkins' outfit that lost only to Urbandale in the regular season and Cedar Falls in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. If there is a weakness, then it's a lack of an experienced passing attack, where graduation claimed the No. 1 quarterback and top receivers of 1987.

"I don't think there is any question about this being their best team since 1980," said Urbandale Coach Dennis Frerichs, whose J-Hawks won the Central Iowa Conference championship last season. "They've got some good backs returning, including the Guthrie kid, and they've got a lot of linemen back. They're going to be very tough to beat." On paper, Urbandale doesn't ap- pear to have enough experience returning to upset Newton. But Frerichs' record of 152-45-1 in his previous 21 seasons at the school speaks for itself. Among the many starters who graduated last season for the J-Hawks were a trio of all-staters Mark DouBrava, Todd McClish and Jay Winger.

"We've obviously got a lot of holes to fill," added Frerichs. "I guess I'm going to have to start going to church more often." Frerichs said he plans to make good use of juniors who played on last year's sophomore team that had an 8-1 record as well as underclassmen who played on the junior varsity team of a season ago that fashioned a 5-1 mark. "We've got 19 lettermen, and we've got some big kids," Frerichs said. "The only problem is that while some of our kids may weigh 250, 260 pounds, they don't stand much taller than 5-6." 68, 3. Not Much Time Bruce, who replaced the retired Darrell Mudra on June 29, has been scrambling to prepare his team for the opener since he reported to work early last month.

"It's a tough thing to take over a football program on July 6 and get a team ready to play," Bruce said. "It's a shame the game has to come so early, but it's here and we've got to be ready. I'm hoping we won't make any glaring mistakes, but that's what normally happens in the first game. We're guarding against it, but with a new quarterback, a new offense and a new defense, it's not hard to make mistakes." Junior college transfer Ken Mack-lin will be the starting quarterback against Pitt, guiding an offense that probably won't put the ball in the air as much as Mudra 's did. "He's made a great transition to our offense, but he just hasn't had enough time," Bruce said of Macklin.

"In the next three weeks, I think he'll improve tremendously." Other standouts on offense during fall practice, Bruce said, have been running back Errol Pebbles, tight end Sherrod Howard, flanker Wes Anderson, split end Rory Feddersen, guard Russ Rubie and tackle Paul Flynn. Different Defense Nine defensive starters are back from a team that reached the Division I-AA playoff semifinals. But they have had to adjust from an even-man front to an odd-man front with a nose guard. Bruce likes the play of defensive ends Bryce Paup and James Jones and inside linebackers Don Harnack and Mike Kolpin, so far. The secondary could should also be a strength, though an injury has muddled things.

Cornerback Kevin Anderson, a first-team all-Gateway Conference performer last season, is questionable for the Pitt game because of a broken thumb. He was to have the cast removed Tuesday. Doug Jackson is the leading contender to handle all the kicking duties. "I wish we would have played an opener before the Pitt game to work out the kinks," Bruce said. "This sounds like a real alibi, but I think the greatest improvement a football team makes is between the first and second games.

After Pitt, we'll have a week off. We can get the team together, make those improvements and get ready for the home opener." The Panthers kick off the home season Sept. 17 against Morgan State. Stadium Court Mats Wilander (2), Sweden, vs. Greg Holmes, Sail Lake City, como.

Olympic team," he said in a statement. "We feel that there are problems with the test and that there has been possible violations of the U.S. Olympic Committee's protocol during the collection process of the samples and we hope to be able to present this information at an administrative hearing this week. "The deadline for certifying members of the U.S. Olympic team is Thursday, Sept.

1, so time is of the essence. "Angel firmly maintains that she has not taken any banned substance and that the test is in error. "During the last year, Angel has subjected herself to the possibility of drug testing seven different times and has been selected for drug testing four different times without difficulty. By subjecting herself to these drug tests, she indicates her innocence," it said. A statement issued earlier said Angel Myers had a prescription for Ortho-Novum, a birth control pill that has "identical characteristics to the steroid the USOC claims she was testing positive for." LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (AP) -Although Angel Myers' supporters insist that birth control pills caused her to fail a drug test, the U.S. Olympic Committee stood behind its decision to remove her from the U.S. Olympic women's swimming team. Myers, 21, traveled to Indianapolis on Monday for an independent drug test at Indiana University.

Other facilities capable of drug testing declined because of ties to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Kirt Myers, Angel's father and coach, said the test was her "only chance." Olympic officials reaffirmed the test that led to her ouster. "We have total confidence in the integrity and validity," spokesman Mike Moran said, adding that substances produced by birth control pills are easily detected and recognized by the drug testing procedure. "We have tested hundreds of worn-en who had taken all sorts of birth control pills," Moran said.

"The level of substance which birth control pills produce is very easily detectable. We know exactly what we're looking for, what level. Birth control pills produce characteristics of a disqualifying substance, but the level and dosage is where it occurs."
