You can talk about trick plays all you want, and they're nice when they work, but that wasn't the key to Nebraska's thrilling 28-24 victory over Oklahoma in the Big Eight's climactic title game Friday. At least not according to Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne. What won the championship and Orange Bowl bid for his team, said Osborne, can be wrapped up in one word: Defense.

"I thought the way our defense played was the story of the game, especially in the second half," Osborne said above the din in a jubilant Corn-husker dressing room. "Take Marcus Dupree's long touchdown run out of there and we played awfully well. Two or three times Oklahoma got good field position with a chance to win the game, but they couldn't do it. "All year long people have been unfairly criticizing our defense. I can't understand it.

Coming into this game we were ranked third in the nation in scoring defense. So we've obviously been playing pretty well." Still, there were many anxious moments for all the Cornhusker faithful in a chilled sellout crowd of 76,398 before Nebraska's Scott Stras-burger intercepted a pass in the final minute and returned it to Oklahoma's 1-yard line, finally ending what had been a tense and exciting duel. By a SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT PROVO, UTAH Iowa basketball Coach Lute Olson starts his ninth season at the Hawkeye helm tonight, and expectations never have been higher. On the heels of four straight National Collegiate tournament appearances, the Hawkeyes are ranked in the top 20 of nearly every preseason poll, including the Associated Press' 12th spot.

Tonight at 8:35 o'clock (Iowa time), in the Marriott Center, they meet a Brigham Young team that returns just one starter from last year's 17-13 club, which went to the National Invitation Tournament. Greg Kite, a 6-foot 11-inch center, is the lone returnee for Coach Frank Arnold's team, and only eight of the 15 BYU players have any game experience at all. Other Veterans But the Cougars can call on other veterans. Scott Sinek, a starter last season, was beaten out, and guard Devin Durrant was a starter in 1979 and 1980 before going on a church mission to Spain last year. He'll start IOWA Please turn to Page 4S senior guard Brent Carmichael.

Storck was UNI's leading scorer last season with a 13.4 average, and Carmichael was second at 10.6. Carmichael also had 80 steals. Wayne State, an NAIA school, has played five games already and won three. The Wildcats are led by 6-6 senior forward Grady Hansen, the Central States Intercollegiate Conference top scorer for the past two seasons. All of the other Wildcat starters are seniors except 6-6 center Lonell Greene, a sophomore.

They'll face Louisiana State in Miami, on New Year's night, but before that they have one more game remaining in the regular season, playing at the University of Hawaii a week from today. Oklahoma will take an 8-3 record to the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, meeting either Arizona State or Washington on New Year's Day. The curtain goes up at 1:35 this afternoon on an Iowa State basketball team that is expected to play to much better reviews than most recent Cyclone squads.

"We're better, there's no question about that," says Iowa State Coach Johnny Orr of the 1982-83 squad. But Orr, who will be directing his 18th collegiate opener and his third here, approaches tipoff against the University of Nebraska-Omaha knowing that anything can happen, and often does, in an opener. Take last year, for example. The Cyclones journeyed 1,000 miles to Billings, and on what must have seemed like a dark and stormy night, lost, 66-55, to Eastern Montana. On the positive side, the Cyclones generally win their first home game at Hilton Coliseum.

The last time they lost a home opener was 1975, when Ken Trickey's club lost, 79-75, to South Dakota. But, as Orr says, "It's hard to tell how you're going to do" the first time out, particularly with a club as young as Iowa State's. UNO, a Division II school coached by Bob Hansen, has played twice, beating Elmhurst, 70-58, and losing to Doane, 62-45. "They're a veteran team with a winning program," Orr said. "They're very patient and they don't beat themselves.

They gave Iowa a tough time before losing in Iowa City last year. "They're big and strong in the middle and we're going to have our work cut out for us." Like a year ago, rebounding is a Cyclone concern. Orr will have 6-foot 11-inch senior Ron Falenschek in the middle and sophomores Barry Stevens at 6-5 and Raynal Harris at 6-6 in the front line. (AP) -Penn State used a strong defense and four field goals by Nick Gancitano to whip arch-rival Pittsburgh, 19-10, Friday, drawing within a game of its first national college football championship. The Nittany Lions trailed Pitt, 7-3, at halftime, but the 1-2 punch of quarterback Todd Blackledge and running back Curt Warner helped lead State past the fifth-ranked Panthers. "Our squad felt at halftime that we were in good shape at 7-3," said Penn State Coach Joe Paterno.

"I don't think there was any one point in the game where we felt we weren't in it." Of his defense, Paterno said, "They have been maligned. But they have played against some good offensive teams. It is an intelligent defensive team and today they played very well." Blackledge completed only 10 of 24 passes for 149 yards, but one was a 31-yarder to flanker Kenny Jackson in the third period that put the Lions ahead to stay. Second-ranked Penn State, which collected the rest of its points on Gan- citano's field goals, boosted its record to 10-1. The Lions are going to the Sugar Bowl for a New Year's Day title confrontation with top-ranked Georgia.

Pitt Coach Foge Fazio, who will take the Panthers (9-2) to the Cotton Bowl to meet Southern Methodist (10-0-1) on Jan. 1, felt he made the mistake that cost the Panthers a chance to win. Trailing, 16-7, in the fourth period with 6 minutes 56 seconds remaining, Pitt had fourth down and less than a yard for a touchdown. Fazio decided to go for a field goal that made it 16-10. "If I had to do it over, I probably would have gone for the touchdown," Fazio said, adding that he decided to go for the field goal because he felt there was time enough left for Pitt to score again.

But Penn State's offense was able to run out most of the remaining time. The game was played in 30-degree weather with wind gusts of 25 to 30 miles per hour, and that wind may have turned the game around. In the third period, Pitt punter Tony Recchia booted only 32 yards after the Panthers, backed up to their 8, were unable to make a first down. Penn State wound up with a first down at the 30. Blackledge followed with the TD toss to Jackson that put the Nittany PENN STATE WHICH WAY IS NORTH? Penn State's Curt showdown between eastern powers.
