He previously served as Iowa governor (1943-1945), lieutenant governor (1939-1943) and state representative (1935-1939). He is chairman of the Republican policy committee of the U. S. senate and is the ranking Republican senator on the joint senate-house atomic energy committee. Senator Hickenlooper was bom July 21, 1896, at Block-ton.

He is a graduate in indus trial science at Iowa State! University in Ames and in; law at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City.
