The Des Moines 19907D Newcasts on KDSM? Fox Broadcasting affiliate KDSM-TV continues to tiptoe closer and closer to creating a local, prime-time newscast. KDSM general manager Tommy Thompson seems genuinely interested, especially since Dave Rhein Thompson did say Fox plans to give its affiliates plenty of news support. He said Fox is putting- together a staff to provide coverage of everything from world and national news, to entertainment and sports news. He said Fox plans to help its affiliates get into the news business by supplying some equipment and technical assistance and even designing a news set. He has no figures on how much money Fox is spending on its news service, or how much it would cost KDSM to get into the news business.

Plans call for Fox to begin offering parts of its news service Jan. 1. and to have the full service operational a year from now. Thompson said KDSM has no timetable for creating a news operation. "We are moving with abundant caution on this," he said.

"Fox is developing a news service that local stations can use to create the best mix of national and local news in either a half-hour or hour format," said Thompson.

"We plan do a fair amount of research before taking the plunge but I didn't hear anything (from Fox) that would make me less interested." Thompson said any newscast created by KDSM would air either at 9 p.m. or 9:30 p.m., ahead of the nightly news on KCCI-TV, WHO-TV and WOI-TV. He points to other independent TV stations, such as WGN-TV in Chicago, that have had success with prime-time newscasts. KPTM-TV in Omaha, also a Fox station, recently began airing a 9 p.m. newscast.

"The only logical rationale for an additional local news service is if you can be distinctly different than the others," said Thompson. "There are content values for local news that have not been explored by the affiliate newscasts" in central Iowa, he added. Thompson declined to say specifically how a potential KDSM newscast would be different from its three competitors. wy Served from P.M. Every week-all year long.
