AT SPORTS Page 4C Tuesday, April 17, 2001 The Des Moines Register DM nnAnm NEXT: vs. Quad City, 7 p.m. Saturday, Veterans Memorial Auditorium Foster wants a winner in Iowa and Quad City Foster F. Haege mouth shut and learn," said Howe, who has played for the Barnstormers in all seven years of the franchise's existence. "There is a lot of talent on this coaching staff that guys can learn from," Howe added.

"People need to respect that, understand that and do the job. If the job is not getting done because of coaching, it's a different thing. If it's not getting done because of the way we're playing, it's our problem and we need to get it fixed. "Right now, I dont see it being the coaches' fault, it's the players. We're not getting the job done." Some joy, somewhere: Barnstormers coach Art Haege tried to smile Saturday night as he ate a postgame slice of pizza in Wichita.

The Barnstormers lost, 46-36, one day after his son, Frank, coached Quad City to a dominating 97-7 victory over Memphis. "At least somebody in the Haege family is feeling good," Art Haege said. United States it's going there now and Des Moines could have been that Green Bay," Foster said, referring to the small-market Packers in the NFL "You've got a lot of great markets in af2 and they're happy to be in af2. They're never going to be in the AFL so Des Moines probably had a six-year fairy tale ride in a league it probably truly didnt belong in." Stat Stuff: Iowa's opponents have scored 45 percent of their points 43 of 96 either directly or indirectly as a result of Barnstormer turnovers. The Barnstormers turned the ball over nine times in their first two games, seven more times than their opponents.

The Barnstormers have stopped opponents on fourth down four times twice as many as the opponents stopped Iowa and allowed teams to convert on third down on two of 15 attempts. The Barnstormers have been successful on third down 11 of 21 times. Just Will: Barnstormers quarterback Andy Jepson, who will start Saturday's game against Quad City, said the team needed to give the defense a break. "You're never out of a game in a league like this," Jepson said. "At the same time, if you continually make mistakes to put yourself in deeper and deeper holes, that just puts more stress on the most difficult part of the game, which is playing defense.

Any way you look at it, we've got to start winning football games. WeVe seen in the last two weeks how hard it is to win on the road. That just tells you that you absolutely have to win at home. It doesn't matter who you're playing." Fix-it time: Lineman Garry Howe said there was a way for the winless Barnstormers to mend their ills. "The cure-all is everybody do their job, stay focused, keep your Life was less complicated for Foster last year, when the Barnstormers played in the Arena Football League and the Steamwheelers carved out a 19-0 mark in the debut af2 season.

Foster used the analogy of leading one team in college and one in high school. "Now that they're in the same league, I have a very big passion for the Steamwheelers because of what happened last year, but Des Moines is still the Barnstormers and I'm still a Des Moines person," Foster said. "I want to make the Barnstormers just as successful in af 2 as they were in AFL in terms of on-field play." Foster said the Barnstormers still would be in the Arena Football League had it not been for rising costs particularly player costs. The Barnstormers were in the smallest AFL market for six years "I really, truly believe that about 10 years from now, the AFL is going to be a pretty big deal in the By DAN McCOOL REGISTER STAFF WRITER Jim Foster said he will wear white when the Iowa Barnstormers play their first arenafootball2 home game Saturday at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. The Barnstormers will face the defending af2 champion Quad City Steamwheelers.

Foster, a majority owner of both teams, said wearing white would be his effort at football neutrality. "I win either way," Foster said. The Barnstormers, coached by Art Haege, are 0-2 while Quad City is 2-0 and owns a franchise-long winning streak of 21 games. The Steamwheelers, coached by Frank Haege, Art's son, are four wins shy of tying the all-time record of 25 consecutive pro football wins set by the Canton Bulldogs between 1921 and 1923. "I'll wear a white blazer," said Foster, who wears a black blazer with the Barnstormers logo on his breast pocket at their games and a blue blazer with the Steamwheeler logo at Quad City games.

"The only time you'll ever see me not in team colors will be when they play each other." One thing about Foster's game-day wardrobe will remain intact Saturday. Foster said he will wear the same black shoes he's worn during his seven years as an owner. The shoes signify a combined 76-30 record. "They Ve got a heck of a winning record in them," Foster said. "I'll wear these until I can't wear them anymore.

These are my good luck shoes." Sports Roundup BASEBALL HOCKEY NBA TENNIS RUNNING SOFTBALL IOWA COLLEGE TEAM OFFENSE NHL PLAYOFFS BOSTON MARATHON IOWA COLLEGE Grand View 16-13, Mount St. Clare 1-8 Benedictine 7. Clarke 2 Briar Cliff 15. Northwestern 3 Dubuque 7-5. Loras 6-2 Grand View 16.
