Not again! Iowa State punter Tony Yelk has his second kick of the day blocked, by Nebraska's Demorrio Williams. Nebraska blocked two punts in Saturday's first quarter and turned both opportunities into touchdowns while building a 21-0 lead. four Big 12 games, the Cyclones have been outscored by a combined 98-14 in the first half. Iowa State has not held a lead against any of its conference foes. "For different McCarney reasons we aot off to bad starts," coach Dan McCarney said.

"This week it was the punt team that was ridiculous." BERRYMAN FIRSTS: One of Iowa State's few bright spots came when freshman defensive end Jason Berryman grabbed his first career interception in the third period. Berryman returned the ball 16 yards. Berryman also recovered a fumble, another career first, in the fourth quarter. "Part of playing defense is ball awareness," Berryman said. "When they throw it, the ball is up for grabs.

With the fumble, I was just in the right place at the right time." QUARTERBACK SHUFFLE: Waye Terry replaced starting quarterback Austin Flynn during the fourth quarter, but McCarney said he is not changing his starter. "Austin Flynn is still our starter," McCarney said. "It's good to see Waye get in there and get his first playing time. We'll continue to evaluate those guys." Andrew Logue Cy Says HOW THE CYCLONES STAND AFTER SATURDAY'S GAME DOWNSIDE: This goes down as another mark in the loss column, and that's never what Cy wants. In addition, Iowa State's streak of 138 straight games without being shut out ended.

Credit the Blackshirts but the Cyclones are paying for their inexperience at quarterback. Special teams continued to struggle after allowing two blocked punts that resulted in Husker touchdowns. UPSIDE: Cy has been bragging about the defense, and today It played a complete game. Dan McCarney took four previous teams to Lincoln and gave up an average of 62 points. Giving up only 28 this year after beating the Huskers, 36-14, last year? It's a much-needed sign of progress.

The last time Nebraska failed to score more than 30 points against Iowa State in back-to-back seasons was in 1977 and '78. Nebraska, which at 3-1 gained sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference's North Division, had a hard time staying focused on Iowa State, now 04 in league play for the first time since 1998. "We need to have a better week of practice," ViliWaldrop said, referring to next week's date with the Longhorns.

"This week, we had a lot of mental and physical mistakes. We have to come out with our heads screwed on right." Johnson said, "The biggest thing is that we have to match (Texas) energy level. We've got to keep it up the whole game." The Cornhuskers took out their ISU Spotlight: IOWA STATE AH. The Cyclones did not cross the Cornhuskers' 42-yard line until the 1-minute 13-second mark of the fourth quarter. "We were getting pressure on the quarterback and getting some good rushes on the inside and the outside," Johnson said. Flynn never had a chance to find a rhythm.

The first time he tried to pass, Flynn was smothered for a 2-yard loss. He took his next snap from the shotgun position and was hit 2 seconds later. "They're good, strong, tough guys," said Flynn, who completed 13 of 29 passes for 109 yards. "They fly to the ball, great team speed. They're just a great all-around defense." And it was a defense in a rush to head for Texas.

"It was not the finish we were looking for," Nebraska coach Frank Solich said. "But we did get an opportunity to play a number of guys that are second on our depth chart." The Cornhuskers had an overwhelming advantage in the trenches, outgaining Iowa State on the ground, 282 rushing yards to 70.

"I've been over here before and it was a complete physical mismatch," said McCarney, whose teams are now 0-5 in Lincoln. "I didn't sense that at all today. Not from the beginning of the game. Not the end of the game. "But they just dominated our kicking game in the first half and we we could not sustain drives enough offensively to get back in the game Blocked Punts CYCLONES, from Page 1C wounds were self-inflicted.

Nebraska blocked two punts in the first quarter and turned both opportunities into touchdowns while building a 21-0 lead. The "Blackshirts" defense added to the mayhem by hitting Iowa State quarterback Austin Flynn on 16 of his first 19 plays from scrimmage. "It didn't seem like we were getting a lot of five-step drops, so we were trying to throw the ball quicker," Flynn said. When it was over, the Cyclones had been held scoreless for the first time in more than a decade. "That's what it all comes down to," Nebraska defensive end Trevor Johnson said.

"If you get a big, old goose egg, you had a great defensive day. It feels good." The last time Iowa State failed to score was during a 41-0 loss at Nothing By ANDREW L0GUE REGISTER STAFF WRITER Lincoln, Neb. Two blocked punts were bad enough. But the way Nebraska blocked those kicks added embarrassment to Iowa State's already wounded special teams unit. Twice in the first quarter, a Nebraska rusher pushed a Cyclone blocker around in the backfield, then raised an arm and swatted away a punt attempt from Tony Yelk.

Those two blocks sent Iowa State reeling toward a 28-0 defeat and a sixth straight loss. "I was just trying to kick it out of there," Yelk said. "Bottom line is they got two of them and almost got a third." Josh Bullocks made the first block with 9 minutes 27 seconds left in the opening period. "It really hurt our football team," Yelk said. "They're out there fighting and clawing, and we don't help out with field position.

It was killing us out there." The Cornhuskers have blocked a punt in three straight meetings with the Cyclones. Iowa State had hoped to shore up its blocking on special teams after having two punts stuffed by Iowa. "Last year, when we won this game, it was because we made a bunch of plays," Cyclone special teams coach Marty Fine said. "This year our punt team didn't make plays. We had three chances that went awry." The Cyclones tried a fake punt near midfield during the second quarter, but failed to pick up a first down.

Yelk completed the pass to Steve Paris, who slipped and fell for a 6-yard loss. "I thought it was set up nice," Yelk said. "I blame myself. It wasn't a great throw. I didn't throw it in the ground, but it was probably close enough.

I've got to get that throw up." A heavy rush caused Yelk to shank another punt before half-time. He ended with a 34.3-yard average on six punts. "I really feel like we keep fighting and scratching and clawing, but keep coming up empty," Yelk said. "I've said in the past couple weeks that we need to make plays, and I kind of ate my own words."
