Shooter Allen Takes State Crown By Ries Tuttle (Outdoor Editor, The Register) CEDAR FALLS, IA. Shattering 99 of 100 clay targets from 26 yards, Bob Allen of Des Moines won the Iowa handicap championship to wind up the four-day state trapshooting tournament Sunday. Shooting in a record field of 467 scatter-gunners, which surpassed last year's record of 400, Allen made Iowa shooting history by being the first to break 99 from a nan dicap of 26 yards for the championship. Morris Neely, of Independence, shooting from the 20-yard post, equalled Allen's total to win the out-of-state handicap crown. Runner-up to Neely for out-of state honors was Ken Kaplin of Owatonna, who smashed 98 targets from 21 yards.

Earlier in the day, several shootoffs, carried over from Saturday, determined trophy winners in the 200 target, 16- yard singles race. Mackerman Wins Don Mackerman of Newton outshot Jim Trulson of Britt for the state championship. C. E. Barnhart of Kansas City, won the out-of-state championship with the flip of a coin after a series of shootoffs failed to unknot his tie with Vic Remders of Waukesha, Wis.

"I putted better this week than I have and I hit the ball better today than on the other days," said Miss Smith.

"I just tried to protect my lead by making the best swing I knew how on every shot it was fun. I don't! know when I've enjoyed a round more. Spray nearly lost his chance at the title when he hooked his drive out-of-bounds on No. 13 in the afternoon.

He put in a 25-footer for a bogey 5. He credited the putt as the stroke which kept up his courage. "I just hooked the ball and my heart quivered a little," said Spray. "But when I dropped the putt I regained some of my confidence. "Then my eagle 3 on the sixteenth was a tranquilizer." A large gallery followed the two as they drove off No.

1 in the playoff. Spray's second shot landed 10 feet from the cup and his first putt was inches from the pin. Pair of Par 4's Chapman's second drifted 25 feet from the pin.
