W) Mike Hershberger's two-out single in the thirteenth inning chased home the winning run in the White Sox's 3-2 victory over New York's Yankees Sunday. A crowd of 44,444 largest in two years saw reliever Juan Pizarro single with two out and continue to second base when center fielder Jack Reed let the ball roll through his legs. Hershberger then singled. The loss cut New York's league lead to five games over second-place Minnesota.

In the ninth, Sherm Lollar led off with a double for Chi cago, but the Sox couldn get the winning run acro-s. In the eleventh, the Yankees had runners on first and third with none out on singles by Yogi Berra and John Blan- chard, but Turk Lown worked his way out of the jam. The Sox got to starter Whitey Ford for a pair of runs in the first inning on Joe Cunningham's single, a walk and Jim Landis' double. New York picked up a run in the second on successive singles by Dale Long, Clete Boyer and Ford. The Yanks tied it in the sixth on singles by Berra, Blanchard and Long's sacrifice fly.

The near-capacity crowd boosted attendance for the three-game series to 104,377 and gave the Yankees a road total of 1,483,261 for 49 dates. The Yankees last year set a road record of 1,946,679 and are expected to surpass that this season. Shooter Allen Takes State Crown By Ries Tuttle (Outdoor Editor, The Register) CEDAR FALLS, IA. Shattering 99 of 100 clay targets from 26 yards, Bob Allen of Des Moines won the Iowa handicap championship to wind up the four-day state trapshooting tournament Sunday. Shooting in a record field of 467 scatter-gunners, which surpassed last year's record of 400, Allen made Iowa shooting history by being the first to break 99 from a nan dicap of 26 yards for the championship. Morris Neely, of Independence, shooting from the 20-yard post, equalled Allen's total to win the out-of-state handicap crown. Runner-up to Neely for out-of state honors was Ken Kaplin of Owatonna, who smashed 98 targets from 21 yards.

Earlier in the day, several shootoffs, carried over from Saturday, determined trophy winners in the 200 target, 16- yard singles race. Mackerman Wins Don Mackerman of Newton outshot Jim Trulson of Britt for the state championship. C. E. Barnhart of Kansas City, won the out-of-state championship with the flip of a coin after a series of shootoffs failed to unknot his tie with Vic Remders of Waukesha, Wis.

Ted Hazelwood of Omaha, formerly of Des Moines, won the professional cham pionship, smashing 199 of 200 targets. Allen was declared all-around champion by breaking 390 of 400 targets thown in the handicap, 16-yard singles and doubles events.

"I just tried to protect my lead by making the best swing I knew how on every shot it was fun. I don't! know when I've enjoyed a round more. I want to thank Sybil Griffin, Shirley Engle- horn and Jack Finlay (Sunny- side pro) for some advise that helped this week." Aside from the tension involved, and the attention of 2,500 spectators, Mari-lynn's round was not spectacular.
