By Bob Tamblyn, R.Ph. An article published in the January 26, 2000 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association has created considerable confusion for patients and physicians alike, due to its failure to delineate between synthetic and natural hormones. The article state that estrogen and progestin, prescribed to decrease the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, actually increase the risk of breast cancer. However, in the study, the "primary type of estrogen used was conjugated estrogens and the primary progestin was medroxyprogesterone acetate" Researchers have long held that there are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans (bio-identical) and synthetic Professional (including horse) preparations, i.e. natural estrogens Compound and progesterone versus conjugated estrogens and Center of medrox progesterone acetate.

An article such as this Northern may cause unnecessary alarm for patients who receive natural (bio-identical) hormones.
