Luckless Bulldogs Drop •;;•. Pair On Late Rallies twice during the weekend and dropped into sixth place in the North Central Conference standings. After dropping a 57-56 de- 6isioh to Humboldt in the local gym Friday night, Webster City dumped the Bulldogs, 58-52, in a come-from-behind win at Webster City Saturday night. Standings W 9 Iowa FaUs 6 Hampton ..". '" 6 AYebster City " "5 Humboldt .'.5 Algona ,...4 Clear Lake !!.!! 3 Grove ......o There's no let-up in sight for Coach Howie Stephenson's team, either, Algona will travel to Hampton for a loop fray Friday night, then will host Estherville'sx highflying outfit here Saturday night. Estherville is the undefeated leader of the Lakes Conference and I Hampton posted a 76-71 victory over the Bulldogs in an earlier : meeting here Dec. 15, 1961. ,>, The Bulldogs were after their [fourth straight basketball victory over Webster City and^came with- lin an eyelash of getting it. They parted off with a bang and carried Ithe battle to the home club all light. . After taking a two-point lead early in the game, the locals, be- Smd the shooting of Chuck Streit irid Tom Waller, raced to a 19-8 ea&at the end of the first period DaMc clouds began to-form in tie second round when Streit picked up a pair of quick fouls, giving him four before halftime. Valler pitched in four free tosses i. the Bulldogs maintained a 28- halftime bulge. • With four fouls, Streit was fore- led 1 to stay clear of much of the •action under the boards during the Ifmal half — and his rebounding |was sorely'jnissed. ' I We.bster City chipped away at Ithe Algoina lead (aid knotted the Icount at 37-37 with a minute re- |mainlng in the third; quarter. The Bulldog? counted enough points to take 9 41-38. lefid at the three- quarter mark, however. the fourth stanza, and with Ades getting 10 points and Reinhardt six' (all on free throws), managed to overtake the Bulldogs soon after the period began. The Lynx then held on and won by six points'. Free throws kept Algona In (he game. The Bulldogs were cold from the field, hitting'only 14 field goals all night. The winners got 20, Streit, for the sixth straight game, was high point man with 18. Waller was next with 15 and Bill Wetzel picked up nine, including seven during the last half. Ades and Soncrant, with 17 apiece, were the only Lynx in double figures. Waller and Streit topped the re- bounders, each getting seven for the Bulldogs. Gary.Naylor potted 10 poimVfor the Algona entry. * * * Algqna-Humboldt ' The 24-point scoring and fine rebounding of big Joe Lane allowed Humboldt to post a thrilling 57-56 victory over-the. Bulldogs before a packed house here Friday night. Lane was the difference in the teams as the big fellow, who managed only A sjx . points when the Wildcats downed the Bulldogs, 5147, earlier in the season at Huni- bqldt, worked harder than at any tinie in his career. '.-;•;' ' It; was a dandy game all the way. ,Both, tezinis missed shots} that-if-hit, could have, made the final count lop-sided one way or the other, but the cold spells were offset by Ijot streams that kept the score close from the end of the first period to the finish. The Bulldogs walked all over Humboldt early, got a .5-0 lead that could have been 11-0 if three other easy shots would have dropped instead of jumping out of the net. The Wildcats tied, the count, then fell behind 17"-13 at the quarter as Bill Wetzel, Chiuck Streit aud Tom Waller led the Algona scoring. Waller and Streit tossed in 12 points between them as the Bulldogs cut the Humboldt lead to 43-42 at the three-quarter mark, but the locals couldn't count the quick bucket or two that would have won the game after taking one point leads a couple of times during the final stanza and Lane and Co., using an effective stall Box score: Algona (56) FG FT F Wood , 3 2-4 1 Wotzel 5 1-3 4 Streit ...' 6 4-6 1 Waller ..., 4 4-4 4 Kueck' , 3 3-6 1 Pratt 0 0-0 1 Shackelford 0 0-0 2 FOR SALE — Hampshire fall yearling and spring boars, 5.88 inch loin eye; first prize junior boar at Spencer; new blood and large selection.
