A Paris judge placed the first of seven photographers expected to ap- pear in court today under formal in-; yestigation for involuntary homicide and failing to aid the dying princess and her companions. The judge then released Nikola Arsov, who was working for the Sipa agency. Formal investigation is a step short of being formally charged. In London, thousands waited up to seven hours in line on Pall Mall td sign condolence books at St.

(AP) Republican George Ryan today announced he will run for governor in 1998, saying he will continue the cooperation with Democrats that has been a hallmark of his two terms as secretary of state.

The decision by the 63-year-old Ryan, the dean of the Illinois GOP, has been expected since Republican Gov. Jim Edgar announced Aug. 20 that he would retire after finishing his second term. DeKalb resident Karen Campbell won the coveted title of Grand Champion in 1996 after claiming 52 first-place and 48 second-place ribbons with her su-'. perior cooking abilities. This year, Campbell believes her second straight is within reach.

"I would like to win it one more time," said CampbelL as she cracked a few eggs for her angel food cake. "Then it will be time for somebody else to take my place." Campbell is planning to enter more than 100 items into the baking competition when the Sandwich Fair starts tomorrow. The competition will take place the course of this week. She has been entering her cookies, brownies, cakes, and other goodies for the last 25 years. In ad-; dition to her baking, she also enters crafts such as quilts and table linens.

Even though she has been active in the fair for 25 years, Campbell has only tried for Grand Champion 'the last five years. In the past, Campbell said she would start baking in May for the September event However, oral surgery slowed her down this year and she was forced to work on the baked goods starting in mid-June. Campbell started with the quick breads and yeast breads earlier this summer. After the breads were completed, Campbell made numerous cookies, can-' digs and cakes, all of which, were placed into her I "jammed-packed" 13-cubic-foot freezer. Campbell's pies are never frozen.
