There are 47 steps on a 40 per cent grade. The car came out of the test absolutely without injury. Our Mr. Duesenberg haying had years of experience in some of the leading automobile factories, and in making repairs on many different makes of automobiles, recognizing tha weak spots and failures, has out of that experience designed and built the car pictured here, and the result is a complete success. His efforts were directed to produce a medium weight, low priced car to mett all the requirements of the hilly, country roads, and he has succeeded beyond all expectations.

The Mason can climb any of the hills in and about Des Moines on high gear with a full load and go fast enough to suit the most exacting. It is also built extra strong where others are weak. All the machinery of the car is built by us after Mr. Duesenberg's design. J.

Joy the game, a solace prize has hfen substituted for the two bail against bogy One of the most popular racing jackets In England is that of Mrs. Langtry. who will shortly open a season in vaudeville in New York. She keeps an elaborate breeding stud near Newmarket, where many crack racers have been bred, but her luck in actual racing is far from good.

Her heavily backed horses are so frequently "short headed." Hut whether finishing first or last the 'plunger" is sure that he is having a run for his money. When Danny Maher passed the post first in the derby on Maj. Kustace Lode's Spearmint, by Carbine out of Maid of the Mint, he landed one of the biggest coups of the century. The winner in his trial all but beat Pretty Polly, the fastest mare in the world, and his connections, and the "sharps" backed him for hundreds of thousands of dollars. One bet ttlona was Hi.flfin to Richard Croker, the late boss of Tnm-mnnv hall, has a large stud near Cork, Ireland, and races his horses in that country with considerable success.

It was his Intention to have a siable at the fashionable Knglish training town-Newmarket, but the Knglish Jockey club (a moat autocratic body), refused him a iicense to train his horses there. To me, that was a condemnation of his car. It pays to do a Utile visiting to the fai'lorics. I have been through, several and learned some valuable things, without beins a nie-chanic. Ask the representatives of the various cars how long It lakes one man to set up their engine, through how tnanv different processes and Insertions important parts pass, and the length of time it takes to perfect them then compare the answers." At last It has heen recognized by the Gluiden tour commission that the strict rules in vogue abroad are the only sensible ones and the idea of locking up the cars over night and not permitting; garage repairs has been adopted. In stipulating that all tinkering and replenishing of supplies must be done after the car has been registered as starting for the dav, the committee has shown wisdom.

This will compel competitors to attend to their cars during their running time, which is Just as it is In the case of the big races, when no supplies may be taken on or adjustments made in the controls. Thus ono step further has been taken toward making contests in this country men'a taks instead of boy's Play. There will be trolley tracks on the longest and fastest stretch of the Van-dorhilt course this year, hut no cars will be run during the race and the tracks are not expected to cause any trouble, as they are flush with the road surface.
