The business was founded 16 years ago by Vaughn D. Mulkey, the present proprietor, as a mattress manufacturing house.

The original business occupied on small 16-foot-frontage store in the famed building. The one window was of the old dwellinghouse type; the store was dimly" lighted by gas- jets. But Vaughn Mulkey knew how to make good mattresses, and East-bay residents speedily grew to recognize the fact that there was nothing better on the market than a Mulkey mattress. People came from all over Northern California to buy Mulkey mattresses; often, they regretted that there was not an equally good line of Mulkey furniture that they could buy. ADDS FURNITURE Eight years Vaughn Mulkey decided to give his customers what they wanted home furnishings that should be of as sterling quality as Mulkey mattresses; furniture that was the best that money could buy sold at prices that gave the customer the advantage of shopping at a store that though outside the high-rent area, was nevertheless only seven blocks east of the Oakland Auditorium on" East Twelfth Street The original store spread from room to room of the historic Washington Hall, as department after department was added to the fast-growing business.

Cohen. fine The Mulkey Furniture and Mattress Company at 607 East Twelfth Street this month celebrates its anniversary of the occupation of the entire two floors and balcony of the historic old Washington Hall at the above address, as a modern furniture, store offering complete service to the home. A year ago, Vaughn D. Mulkey, for 16 years in business at his present location, completed plans to take over the entire building, giving him one of the finest and most spacious furniture stores on the Pacific Coast.

A comprehensive program of improvement, modernization and re-decoration, commenced then, has just been concluded today, and the store is celebrating the event with a "house wanning" that is planned to bring thousands of interested visitors to that home of fine furniture.
