The business was founded 16 years ago by Vaughn D. Mulkey, the present proprietor, as a mattress manufacturing house.

The original business occupied on small 16-foot-frontage store in the famed building. The one window was of the old dwellinghouse type; the store was dimly" lighted by gas- jets. But Vaughn Mulkey knew how to make good mattresses, and East-bay residents speedily grew to recognize the fact that there was nothing better on the market than a Mulkey mattress. People came from all over Northern California to buy Mulkey mattresses; often, they regretted that there was not an equally good line of Mulkey furniture that they could buy. A year ago, Vaughn D. Mulkey, for 16 years in business at his present location, completed plans to take over the entire building, giving him one of the finest and most spacious furniture stores on the Pacific Coast.
