Friedenfels said those interested in adopting are asked to fill out an application found in the "Documents" section of www.furrypets.com to get their name on the list. The goal for the Christmas Campaign, which began in mid-November and ends on Tuesday, Dec. 24, is $561,000. As of late last week, the campaign was at about 34 percent of its goal.

Friedenfels said on a typical day she receives around 40 emails. By mid-morning Monday she already had 210 messages, almost all inquiring about the dogs or offering help. Staff members and shelter volunteers who spoke with Daily Herald Media Sunday described the situation the dogs were in as part puppy mill and part hoarders' home. "I had never seen anything like that before," said Connie Cimino, a volunteer at the shelter who was part of the rescue group. "The home was in deplorable condition.

You would be stepping in feces, and there was urine everywhere. The smell was unbelievable." Earlier reports that the house had been condemned couldn't be confirmed Monday. Lincoln County Health Director Shelly Hersil said the county health department usually makes that call but as of Monday morning her office had not done that. Lincoln County Sheriff's Department Lt. "It has been amazing," Shelter Manager Liz Frie-denfels said. "There's been such an outpouring of support it's been incredible. Walmart sold out of canned dog food yesterday." The dogs, mostly puppies, were retrieved Saturday from a home along Highway near Gleason and were owned by a couple who had planned to sell them. Friedenfels said the Humane Society has "gotten a ton of canned dog food and towels" but still needs cleaning supplies and milk replacer to feed puppies that haven't been weaned.

Needed financial support also is coming in. "Just the spays and neuters will probably run $8,000 to $10,000," she said. "That would be overwhelming for a small residence sanitary. Fischer said the couple expressed an interest in obtaining a kennel license and a deputy was trying to assist them with that process, which begins each year in January. The landlord of the home evicted the couple, which prompted them to contact the Humane Society and seek help in relocating the animals, he said.

Fischer said the home had running water and heat the entire time the dogs were staying there, although Friedenfels said the home was not heated when she and other shelters workers were there Saturday afternoon and evening. Fischer said no criminal charges are being pursued. "There's no case," he said. "It was just the turning over of animals and A million times I've needed you, A million times I've cried, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died.
