Museum brings T-rex to Iowa CARLSON, from Page 1B even and before it opened Saturday had commitments from area schools that plan to bring 10,000 students over the three-month run. They likely will be impressed, because one of the first things they'll see, just inside the door, is an eye-level replica of Sue's massive skull. Visitors then will move through a series of hands-on educational stations. The dinosaur's owners named it "Sue," which would indicate it's a female.

But that's not necessarily true. They call it Sue only because it's the first name of the woman who discovered the bones. Scientists studied the skeleton and were unable to determine the animal's sex. The scientists at the Field Museum call it a "her," and that's good enough for us. The bones told them Sue was 28 years old at the time of her death, about 67 million years ago.

After a battle over ownership of the bones, a judge determined the skeleton belonged to owners of the land where it was found. It was purchased at auction for $8.4 million by the Field Museum i in 1997. Museum officials are keeping the original in Chicago, but they developed the replicas so people around the world could see Sue. Those who have seen both say it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between the real Sue and the copies. "We couldn't be doing any of this without the help of people in the community," said Kay Thuesen, public affairs coordinator for the UNI museums.

"We said we needed 300 volunteers. We have 300 volunteers. We've asked each of them to give us 15 hours over the next three months." One is Eleanor Vanous, who is running the gift shop. It's wall-to-wall dinosaur. She's found gummi dinos, dino pencils, dinosaur key rings, dolls, T-shirts, posters, books, backpacks and some marvelously wild dinosaur sunglasses.

People were coming to buy last week, even before the exhibit opened. "We think the exhibit will be successful because it is so unique and has such broad appeal across age groups," said Grosboll. "We wanted something exciting. I'd say we have it." John Carlson can be reached at (515) 284-8204 or Dinosaur exhibit "A Named SUE" is showing at 1326 Waterloo Road in Cedar Falls. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m.
