a Des Moines Register GC OBITUARIES ALMANAC Thursday, December 1, 2005 Page 9B JAMES DEMOSTENES SMITH Whitmore Lake, Michigan James Demostenes Smith. 74, of Whitmore Lake, Michigan, died unexpectedly Thursday, November 24, 2005 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was born September 10, 1931 in Des Moines, lowa, the son of the late John D. and Coralla Smith, both of whom immigrated from Greece. He received a B.S.

and a M.A. in Economics from Drake University in Des Moines and his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Oklahoma. His teaching career began at American University in Washington, D.C. where he also worked for the United States Treasury and Bureau of the Census.

He and his family moved to Pennsylvania where he continued his teaching career a at the Pennsylvania State University. He served as a consultant to many organizations including the United Nations, Executive Office of the President, Department of Health and Human Services and the Urban Institute. He served as the Phillip Allen Visiting Professor of Economics at Yale University from 1976-1977. His final move was to the University of Michigan where he served as a research scientist and program director at the Institute for Social Research. The economic research he conducted throughout his career at Penn State, Yale and the University of Michigan resulted in over 40 articles and two books which focused primarily on the distribution of income and wealth.

He also worked extensively on developing large computer simulation models of economic behavior. His research, writing and grants took him many places in the world but his special favorite was France. Even though he contracted polio when he was 15 and used crutches for the rest of his life, his exuberance for natural, intellectual and philosophical pursuits was undiminished. An entrepreneur as well, he started, ran and advised numerous small businesses including a copy business, video store and deli. Gourmet cooking, fine wine and good conversation filled many of his days and when he retired to 40 acres outside Ann Arbor, gardening and major landscaping filled many more.

At this time in his life, two dogs, LeQuo and Philo, became his constant and beloved companions. He is survived by his former wife, Mary Smith, of Port Matilda, Pennsylvania; his daughters, Candace Smith and husband Philip Hawk of Lemont, PA, Lori Baney and her husband Bruce of Port Matilda, PA and Marcella Smith and her husband Joel Pleitez of State College, PA: as well as five grandchildren, Maxwell and Simon Hawk, Benjamin and Sarah Baney, and Demelza Smith. In addition, he is survived by his siblings, George Smith and wife Susan of Phoenix, AZ, John Smith and wife Karen of Stillwater, Minnesota, Ellen Pichelmeyer of Phoenix, AZ and Mary Haggard her husband Kenneth of Mesa, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Huron Valley, 3100 Cherry Hill Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 5 p.m.

on Saturday, December 3, 2005 at Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Hamburg Chapel. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the time of service. ELIZA JANE YOUNG THOMAS Des Moines Eliza Jane Young Thomas, 97, of Valley View Village, 2571 Guthrie, died Thursday, November 24, 2005. Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m.

Friday, December 2 at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6 8 p.m. Thursday, December 1, at Hamilton's Funeral Home on Lyon Street. Mrs. Thomas was born in Missouri, and then moved to lowa where she lived all of her life.

She worked at Rollins Hosiery Mills. She was a 50 year member of Eastern Star Chapter 89 and also a charter member of Des Moines Lapidary Society. Mrs. Thomas is survived by a daughter, Elaine (James) Booth of Estero, Florida; three grandchildren, Bruce (Connie) Booth of Petoskey, MI, Leslie Esfahan of Ft. Myers, FL and Melissa (Robert) Witsell of Rome, GA; and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death in 1981, was her husband 52 years, Gomer; stepdaughter, Juanita; 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Memorial contributions, are suggested to Methodist Church, of which she was a member. BOB L. ROBERTS Des Moines ROBERTS Bob L. Roberts was born on July 15, 1926, in Lucas County, lowa.

He passed away suddenly of a heart attack on November 27, 2005, doing what he loved, hauling newspapers. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2005 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa. Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery south of Lucas, lowa. Bob was joined in marriage to Erma Faye on January 15, 1958.

Bob spent the last 36 years hauling newspapers for The Des Moines Register. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Thelma; daughter, Judy Boals; and grandson, Wesley Lawrence. Bob is survived by his wife, Erma Faye of Des Moines; his brother, Edwin R. and wife Barbara of Florence, Alabama; his son, John Tyer and wife Pauline of Des Moines; daughter, Jane Tyer-Terrones and husband Anthony of Denver, Colorado; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. MARK TODD SCHAGER Blaine, Minnesota Mark Todd Schager, 38, left this world, Monday, November 28, 2005 at his residence in Blaine, MN.

Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2005 at Hamilton's Funeral Home on Lyon Street with interment following at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasantville. Mark was born November 12, 1967 to Yvonne and Dean Schager in Des Moines, IA. Growing up, he attended Adams Elementary, Hoyt Middle School and graduated from Hoover High School. At age 7, Mark had the opportunity to meet Jerry Lewis.

In 1979, Mark was the lowa State Poster Child for Muscular Dystrophy. As an adult, Mark moved Courage Center in Blaine, MN in 1988. Most recently, he was accepted as a member of DMD Pioneers, an advocacy and resource organization for persons living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Mark always believed that there would be a cure in his lifetime. Mark is survived by his mother and step-father, Yvonne and Les Norman of Des Moines; brothers, Mike and his wife, Kim Schager of CA and Matt and his wife, Heather Schager of Des Moines; niece and nephew, Nathanael and Natalea of CA; Schager family of Washington state and Elder family of Des Moines, IA; and Mark's cat, Ashley.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Dean Edward Schager and most recently his grandfather, Richard (R.G.) Elder. RAYMOND GROVE NOEL West Des Moines Raymond Grove Noel, 90, died of cancer on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at Kavanagh House.

His body was donated to Des Moines University. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church. The family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Raymond was born May 7, 1915 in Akron Ohio.

He lived in Des Moines over 45 years. He graduated from the University Of Akron, and as a Division Sales Manager Firestone Industrial Products retiring after 41 years. He served for five years in World War Il as a pilot with the Air Transport Command. He married Eleanor Scatterday in Akron, Ohio on October 14, 1939, and they renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary. Following his retirement, he worked part -time in the Service Dept.

of the Davis, Hockenberg, Wine Law Firm. He volunteered with the grounds crew along with golfing at his beloved Willow Creek Golf Course. He was a volunteer at lowa Methodist Medical Center. Ray was a good man of integrity, loved and respected by his family and everyone with whom he was associated. His survivors are his wife, Eleanor; daughters, Michele Page of Lawson, MO and Linda (Patrick) Bennett of Rhinelander, WI; two grandsons, Anthony and Christopher (Jami); and one greatgrandson, Adrian of Madison, WI.

Memorial contributions may be made, at his request, for a tree at Willow Creek Golf Course or to Plymouth Congregational Church. McLaren's Chapel Dignity at Resthaven Cemetery VIVIAN M. PINCKNEY Ankeny Vivian Margeruite Pinckney, 87, died November 26, 2005 at her home in Ankeny. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at Merle Hay Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service time.

Vivian was born in Omaha, NE on June 5, 1918 to Ray Pitsor and Minnie (Brendmoen) Pitsor. She graduated in 1937 from Waubay High School, and had lived in Des Moines and Granger since 1966. She retired from the State of lowa in 1982. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Ankeny, Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star and Legion Auxiliary. Vivian is survived by her husband, Leslie Pinckney of Ankeny; children, Vic (Peggy), Pam, Tom, Tim (Susie) and Terry; stepson, David (Sandy); grandchildren, Kristy, Korry, Katy, Rob, Mathew and Meredith; brother, Dean; and sister, Dorothy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Vernon and Buddy; and sister, Frances. Memorial contributions may be made to Shrine Hospital. Merle Hay Funeral Home SAMIR HALVADZIJA Ankeny Samir Halvadzija, 38, died November 30, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center. Volz, 48, of Des Moines, after a long tight with Muscular Dystrophy went to be with the Lord on November 30th, 2005 at home, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 3rd at Ft.

Des Moines United Methodist Church, 6205 SW 9th Street at 10:00 A.M. Danny was born March 26, 1957 and lived all his life in Des Moines. He played the organ in a five piece band 'The Rhythm Makers, was the state Muscular Dystrophy Poster Child, then graduated Tech High School in 1975. He worked twenty-one years for Budget Marketing and affiliates in the PDS magazine service. He was Employee of the Year in 1995.

Danny was the bookkeeper eighteen years for the family business and Nutmeats. He was the recipient of a personal Achievement Award in 1995 from the National Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was a lifetime member of Ft. Dsm United Methodist Church, where he dedicated many hours of service. He held membership in lowa Demolay, Masons, Scottish Rite Temple, and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.

He loved to travel on cruises, Las Vegas, summers in Clear Lake, lowa and playing with his puppy, "Sassy." He is survived by parents, Bill and Jean Volz: sister, Sherri (David) Volz-Little of Des Moines; a brother, Larry (Paula) Hylbak of Ankeny, three nieces, Kindra, Krista and Nicole; and a nephew, Eric. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Ft. Dsm United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday, December 2nd at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home from 4-8 P.M. with Danny's family greeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

Danny will be greatly missed by his family and friends. EVELYN LEWIS Des Moines DANNY L. VOLZ Des Moines Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Lewis, 9 93, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at True Bible Baptist Church.

Interment, Glendale. The body will lie instate from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service. There will be no viewing after the eulogy. Mrs.

Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Lewis, Sr. and her son, Harold Jr. She is survived by her sister, Virgie Rivers; her daughters, Barbara Irvin, Artie Harper, Marveline Jackson and Mary K. Johnson; her sons, Leonard, Phillip, Joseph, Melvin, Johnnie, Larry and Donald Lewis; 54 grandchildren, 111 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 to 8 p.m.

at Highland Park Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home between 6 a and 8 p.m. Henderson's 515 309-6550 RUTH E. LARSON Des Moines 1909-2005 Ruth E. Larson, 96, passed away Friday, November 25, 2005 in Milwaukee, WI, where she had been living for the last four years.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 2nd, from 5-8 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3rd at the funeral home. Ruth was born May 20, 1909, to Andrew and Agnes Crawford, in Lonaconing, MD.

She moved to lowa in 1911 and attended schools in Hocking and Albia, IA. After graduation from high school, she moved to Des Moines, IA where she met and married Paul Larson. Ruth attended Drake University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught school in Waukee and Des Moines until her retirement in 1974. Ruth attended Central Gospel Chapel in Des Moines for over 70 years.

Ruth is survived by her children, Ron (Judi) Larson, Duvall, WA, Carole (Donald) Smith, Hales Corners, WI, and David (Susan) Larson, Everett, WA; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Irma Crawford; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Agnes Crawford; her husband, Paul; brothers, Daniel, Robert and Andrew; and sisters, Agnes and Jean. ANDREW "ANDY" ALLEN JONES Phoenix, AZ Andy, 51, formerly of Des Moines, died of heart failure at his home in Phoenix, AZ. Memorial services will be Saturday, December 3, 2005 in Phoenix. He retired in April of 2005 as a Electrical Foreman for the city of Phoenix. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Robert Jones and a sister, Catherine. Seaver 1 PM Sunday at Resthaven Cemetery Westover Funeral Home 276-4567 Dunn's Funeral Home 244-2121 ilesfuneralhomes.com ilesfuneralhomes.com VELMA DAVIDSON CROSS Des Moines Velma Davidson Cross, retired school principal and lifelong champion of education, died November 12, 2005 of Parkinson Disease at Scottish Rite Park retirement community in Des Moines. She was 90. Mrs. Cross was born Velma Irene Davidson in lantha, Missouri, and moved to Des Moines as a teenager.

She graduated from East High School, then from Grinnell College in 1937. While teaching at Tama High School, she met Raymond Ariel Cross, a music teacher there and a percussionist. They married in 1941, and had four children. In 1948, they moved to Des Moines so he could undergo treatment for advanced cancer at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Widowed in late 1948, she resumed her teaching career at Smouse Opportunity School, later teaching at Kurtz Junior High School and Roosevelt High School, before earning a Masters degree in Education at Drake University in 1957.

She was girls' advisor at Roosevelt High School from 1962 to 1971, and then became one of Iowa's first female secondary school principals at Kurtz Junior High School, working there until her retirement in 1979. Mrs. Cross had many interests, volunteering at Blank Hospital for Children, reading to the blind on the radio, and serving as a guide in the lowa Governor's Mansion for many years. She traveled extensively, including to the former USSR, Laos, Australia and New Zealand, and led high school tours to European cities. She was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the American Association of University Women and the National Education Association.

She was also a member of PEO Sisterhood, which promotes international educational opportunities for women. Her older son, Ariel Lindley Cross, was a reconnaissance pilot in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was declared missing in action in 1968 during a night mission. Mrs. Cross remained active in national POW-MIA organizations dedicated to disseminating information about missing servicemen and providing support for their families, and was a past president of Iowans Care.

Believing firmly that quality education is of utmost importance, she supported several educational institutions. After sending her own four children through college, she subsequently paid tuition for other needy college students, thereby repaying the scholarship help she herself had received during the depression years. Mrs. Cross is survived by three children, Carol Lowenthal of Cleveland, Caren Cranston of Baltimore and Cordell Cross of San Diego; five grandchildren and four great-grandsons. Her only sibling, Melba Davidson Naber, died several years ago in Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at Scottish Rite Park, 2900 Woodland. Peggy spent many years raising her seven children. She returned to school, attending DMACC, worked at several jobs and retired from ISLLC. Peggy enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking spending time with her friends and family.

Peggy will be greatly missed by her loving family: sons, Bill of West Des Moines, Bob (Marie) of Clive, Mike (Marla) of Story City, Rick (Marion) of Stuart and Dustin of Windsor Heights; daughters, Michele and Kari both of West Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sandra Warner of Urbandale and Anita Schrum of Ogden and many nieces, nephews and loving friends. Peggy will be met in heaven by her parents, Roland and C. Friday, December 2 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the 1.0.0.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Alta was born January 3, 1922, the daughter of John and Julia Laudner. She was married for 61 years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She by her husband, Wilbur of Indianola; son, Michael (Joyce) Warburton of Des Moines; daughters, Patricia (Don) Willett Des Moines and Sandra (Reg) Molin of Indianola; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Beryl and Wilma Jorgensen and Berniece Koenigsberg; and brother, Karl Laudner. ZIMMERLINE Adair Cpl. Brian Christian Zimmerline, 23, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Friday, November 25, 2005 at the lowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Brian was born September 13, 1982, to Kevin Christian and Denise Jean (Hack well) Zimmerline in Atlantic, Iowa. He grew up in Adair and as a small child, at age two, he started tinkering with things. As he grew older that led to trying to fix things.

He would watch his father repair and rebuild objects, and ended up being a fix-it man for family and friends. During high school, Brian was involved in FFA, wrestling, football and track. He graduated from Adair-Casey High School in 2001, and moved to Des Moines where he worked construction until the summer of 2002. Brian joined the Marines July of 2002, leaving on July 29th for 13 weeks of boot camp at MCRD in San Diego, California. He then went to the school of infantry, graduating in January 2003.

He continued training until assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations aboard the USS Peleliu, deploying August 22, 2003. He went to Hawaii, Singapore, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Africa, Australia, Guam, Hawaii, then back to California. He furthered his training until December 2004, when he was assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable, aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, deploying December 6, 2004. They were in Hawaii, Guam, then to Indonesia and Sri Lanka to provide humanitarian aid to the Tsunami victims and then continued to Kuwait and Iraq. They returned through Australia and Hawaii returning back to California in June 2004.

He advanced his training and in October of 2005 reenlisted to be stationed in Des Moines in Inspection and Instruction duty. Brian enjoyed the outdoors hunting. fishing, camping, four wheeling, snowmobiling and boogie boarding. He loved spending time his friends. His big smile and the mischief that sparkled in his big blue eyes will always be remembered.

Surviving Brian are his parents, Kevin and Denise Zimmerline of Adair, IA; three sisters, Melissa and her husband Joe Bernard, Jr. of LaVista, NE, Wendy Zimmerline of Cedar Rapids, IA and Abby Zimmerline of Cedar Falls, IA; a special niece, Shelby Bernard of LaVista, NE; grandparents, Gene and Naomi Hackwell of Anita, IA, and Agnes Zimmerline of Adair, IA; great-grandmother, Leitha Jensen of Anita, IA; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Brian was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joe Zimmerline and his uncle, Everett Hauschildt. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2005 in the gymnasium at the Adair-Casey Community School.

Burial will be in the Canby Cemetery, Canby, Iowa, with full military honors by the United States Marine Corp. Public visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, with the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

ROBERT ARTHUR GUSTAFSON Kelley Bob Gustafson, 68, died suddenly of complications from lung cancer on Monday, November 28, 2005 at Israel Family Hospice in Ames. Services will be 1 p.m.

Friday, December 2 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kelley. Rev. Katherine Werner will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Madrid. Bob was born on August 31, 1937 in Boone, IA to Arthur and Florence (Reynoldson) Gustafson.

He was a lifetime resident of Boone County. He was a 6th grade teacher in the Nevada School District, retiring in 1996. He married Carol Severtson in Slater on October 2, 1959. He was a member of the National Antique Oldsmobile Club, played trombone in the Ballard Community Band, and was on the Heritage Hall Board of Directors. is survived by his wife, Carol of Kelley; two daughters, Jan (Ray) DittLacona and Julie (James) Minot of Madrid; two grandchildren, Heidi and Christina Dittmer; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard and Raymond.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 1 at SoderstrumRiis Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials will be used to fund the completion and installation of three stained glass windows Bob was making for Bethany Lutheran Church. PAULINE DAVIS Des Moines Pauline Davis died peacefully in her sleep on November 29th, 2005 at the Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines.

Pauline was born in Kirksville, Missouri on April 1st, 1911. She will be greatly missed by daughters, Dixie Holder, Virginia Quijano, Lois Birmingham and Dianne Dickson, all of Des Moines, Joanne Malone of Whittier, California and Joyce Ferin of Urbandale; son, Harry Davis of Des Moines; and sister, Velma Davenport of Mingo, Iowa. Pauline had 27 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilber; and a daughter, Barbara Crane; sisters, Mary Ivie and Helen Campbell; and brothers, Bill, Bob, Kenny, Russ, Ray and Jack Wimber. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m.
