2 Pes Moines Si'nday Register September 14, 1997 Pop music jtNew bluegrass releases I keep theme of the home concert scene 'I MUSIC 1 fi Continuedmm Page IF Mm 1 9 Ft! 4 4 tK the Vanguard label is a different take on home from a life lived mostly on the road. Gadd, former lead singer for Wild Rose and the New Coon Creek Girls and backup singer for Patty Loveless, sings of long-distance love affairs on "40 80 or 10" (interstate highway numbers), of plans unfulfilled on "Life Got in the Way" and memories of home on "All The Old Men Are Gone" and "They Tore Down Our Mountain." But this month's biggest homecoming is the debut of Longview, Rounder Records' new supergroup. The self-titled album features an all-star cast Dudley Connell (Seldom Scene), James King (The James King Band), Joe Mullins (Traditional Grass), Don Rigsby (Lonesome River Band), Marshall Wilborn (Lynn Morris Band) and Glen Duncan (Lonesome Standard Time) in an emotional return to the sounds of bluegrass's early years of the '40s and '50s. By KEITH LAWRENCE IWKNNIttlKO Mksnknikr-Inuukkk At the heart of bluegrass music is a search for a mythical home. The late Bill Monroe, the father of what he called "high lonesome music," sang about the longings for a hometown he had long since outgrown.

And times he could no longer return to. Three new bluegrass releases on three different labels keep that theme alive in September. The most obvious is Gary Brewer the Kentucky Ramblers' "Memories of Home," the first release of the new Cowan Creek label. It's almost a theme album with 14 "home" songs including "Going Fishing with Dad," "A Mother's Love" and "Y'all Come." The latter features three generations of Brewers with Gary's father, Finley "Jim" Brewer and son, 2-year-old Gary Jr. Joining in.

There's even a song about "Rosine, Monroe's hometown. Pam Gadd's "The Long Road" on ii vll Center; tickets cost $25 and $20 through Ticketmaster. Great VIWl rocker "That Train Don't Stop Here." Where Los Lobos' 1992 original approximated the fast, heavy (and sexual) rhytlun of a train going down a track, Brown portrays a finicky passenger demanding a comfy pillow In the passenger car. For most of this century, train songs were incredibly romantic symbols for all kinds of emotions: Lead-belly's "Rock Island Line" Jiad the train delivering him to heaven to wash off his sins; Otis Rush's Chicag6 blues standard "So Many Roads, So Many Trains" was a desperate wild-goose train chase for love and satisfaction; and Junior Parker's "Mystery Train," later covered by Elvis Presley, in which an unfathomably long train took his baby away. And that's not counting country music, which gave us such classics as Johnny Cash's "Orange Blossom Special," Roy Acuff's "Wabash Cannon-ball," Patsy CUne's "Life's Railway to Heaven" and a significant part of ex-railroader and "singing brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers' ouevre. (Many of these songs have been collected on Rounder Records' two-volume "Classic Railroad Songs" collections.) "Lots of blues, lota of ballads, lots of lonesome songs because the train is so many different symbols to so many different people, For prisoners, they were a symbol Several lingers revive this century's romance with the railroads. ly STIVI KNOPPER Kniiiiit-Riiiukh When the late folksinger Steve Goodman lamented the "disappearing railroad blues" in his classic 1971 song "City of New Orleans," trains really were disappearing.

And, for the most part, so were train songs. People wanted to hum about snasxy cars and sleek airplanes, not chugging behemoths to cause interminable delays when the cars crossed the roads. Folklorists and nostalgic writers continue to sigh about this. "The young have little, if any, sense of what has been lost with the trading of trains for automobiles and airplanes," complains Jazz expert Nat Hentoff, who recently echoed Goodman's 26-year-old line in a syndicated column. He refers to a "revival of ex-cursion trains" and the prevalence of passenger trains, but he fails to acknowledge hat train songs never faded out.

In fact, they're creeping back. The great singer Ruth Brown opens her bluesy new album, "RB Ruth Brown," by torch-singing Los Lobos' rtxico FREEPORT BAHAMAS Condo on great quiet beach. There Is still area affection for trains." Adds Lyle: "Trains are still on human scale, whereas planet aren't.
