Provo Policemen Improve Marksmanship After 21 weeks of intensive practice the Provo police have an improvement of approximately 20 percent in their pistol marksmanship.

In the pictures above are shown the six police officers who participated in the practice, and their instructor. Left to right, they are: Chief John E. Harris, Arnel Milner, Bert. Halladay, Captain Edward O'Brien instructor; Captain James C. Snow, Sergeant L.

C. Davis and O. E. Pederson won the medal presented by a Salt Lake ballistics expert for the best record of the season, exclusive of Captain O'Brien. To Make Bid For State Cup holding weekly contests in arget shooting, instituted by Police Chief John E.

Harris, the Provo police force has improved its pistol shooting ability by 20 per cent over a period of 21 weeks. Every man in the department is now a good marksman with a pistol and several of the men are near the "expert" class. The practicing will continue, says Chief Harris. The weekly target shoots were started on August 7 with Captain Edward O'Brien in charge. O'Brien, Sergeant L.

C. Davis and Officers Arnel Milner and Oscar Pederson had graduated to the small target, which has a bulls- eye of 1 5-8 inches. The bullseye on the large target is 5 inches across. Shooting was at distances of 45 feet, 60 feet and 75 feet. CTiief Harris, Captain J.

C. Snow and Officer Bert Halladay who remained on the large target, improved rapidly as well as the other four men and in the last six weeks Chief Harris had four perfect scores. Officer Pederson won a medal for having the highest percentage of the season, with an average over 21 weeks of 93.28 percent. Next to him, was Milner with 92.57 per cent and in third place was Davis with 82.33 per cent. The medal was presented by E.

A. Hedman, ballistics expert on the Salt Lake police force. The greatest improvement, however, was shown by Chief Harris and Officer who started out farther down the scale. Team Average The entire force was shooting an average of 79 at the beginning and were up to 97.3 on December 26, the last shoot. The team average for 'the year was 91.06 per cent.

O'Brien's record for the season was best, although he did not compete for the medal. He averaged 96.29, and the fact that this expert was only a few points ahead of some of the most improved shooters on the police force indicates, how the quality of their shooting has been bettered. Last year the Provo police finished a poor last in the state meet in Salt Lake City. This' year, they will be battling for one of the top places. Captain O'Brien pointed out that if all the men had remained shooting on the large target, the team average would have been 99.

per cent at the end of the season. The only perfect score on the small target was.made by O'Brien on December 18. "Pistol shooting is much more difficult than rifle shooting," said Captain O'Brien. "In the first place, you can't steady the gun against the body as with rifle; secondly, every person has a tendency to flinch with each or less. You can see.

this by shooting once with a shell in the chamber, then once without it." Need Steady "Steady nerves, correctly ad- few simple tricks of taking aim few simple rticks of taking aim are "squeezing" the trigger are essential to good shooting. A revolver is better for target shooting than an automatic because the trigger on an automatic is harder to pull. "Most effective pistol shooting done at close range. A man could be shot at 150 yards but in the actual cases where officers of gunmen are killed it is usually, at very close -range, sometimes less than 10 feet." I Injuction Set Aside In Provo Mortuary Case Like a jack in the box with a strong spring, the legal battle between C. O.

Claudin, mortician, and Provo city, over the location of Claudin's funeral home in Provo refused to stay put. Friday morning the case once again popped up after it was seemingly settled -last-week-'by court" order from Judge M. Larson, a writ of injunction against the operation' of the establishment as a funeral home. Judge Larson signed an order Friday setting aside the injunction on the grounds that the hearing had been held without notice to the defendant or his attorneys and without their having entered a default. A.

H. Christensen, attorney for Claudin, signed an affidavit to the effect that he had not been given proper notice of the hearing. Further, the defense set forth that there are various controvert- ed matters at issue on which" the defendant is entitled to be heard in a trial." Provo city has engaged special counsel for the case, Brockbank and Pope, while Christensen, Straw and Christensen have been defending Claudin. The fact that two other mortuaries are also operating in the residential district, and would perhaps be subject to the Claudin puts an unusual aspect on 'the case. One of these is the Deseret Mortuary with which Mayor p.
