Veterans Auditorium ORTEGEL RAKES OFFICIATING IN LATEST OEFEAT Continued from Page One last week in Las Cruces, N.M., haven't won on the road In seven Valley games and are coming off a 114-86 loss Monday night at Southern Illinois.

Two nights earlier they lost at Indiana State, 86-79. You've heard of games in which the turning point was the opening jump. Well, that was about the case Monday at Carbondale. At half time, Southern Illinois owned an incredible 70-29 lead over a team troubled with the flu. This figures to be a game Drake can win.

But, as the Wichita State debacle proved, the Bulldogs need Lewis "Black Magic" Lloyd on the floor if they hope to beat anybody. And, because of fouls, Lloyd wasn't in the game long enough Monday. He played only 28 of the 40 minutes, fouled out with 7:24 to go and finished with just 20 points 10.9 below the average he took into the game. Lloyd is a class guy. Although missing siz of his first seven shots, he didn't blame his subpar performance on the two bad ankles he has, and he didn't even bring up the jammed finger on his left hand.

Lloyd had tape on the finger he injured in the 92-90 loss to Creighton. "We got out of the blocks all right against Wichita State," Ortegel said Tuesday, "but it was a horribly-officiated game. Some of the calls were pathetic." Greg Webb's basket with :07 to play gave New Mexico State Its victory over Drake last week. But Slab Jones, who has an 18.3 average, led the Aggies that night with 32 points five under Lloyd's total. New Mexico State is tied for fifth place in the Valley with a 7-7 record and is 16-8 overall.

The new four-sided scoreboard created by Fair-Play Scoreboards of Des Moines is 13 feet square and eight feet high. It comes complete with a message board, which not only will provide words but cartoons, too. It will be a much-needed addition to the Auditorium. BRAKE WOMEN IN HOME FINALE The Drake women's basketball team, which has dropped its last four games, hopes to rebound against Minnesota in a game at 5:10 o'clock tonight at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. After the Bulldogs' 67-62 loss to Detroit on Sunday, though, three starting players were sidelined with the flu.

Barb Johnston, Jan Krieger and Connie Newlin are doubtful starters for tonight's game. The Drake-Minnesota winner will probably be the top seeded team in next week's sub-regional tournament in Lincoln, Neb. The Minnesota game, the regular-season finale for Drake, marks the final home game for seniors Johnston and Sharon Upshaw. NINES PROPELS SIMPSON, 86-79 The earner's knre Newt Service INDIANOLA, IA. Rootevell 1. By TOM DAVIDSON ReVfltttvf Stvff WrtMr Most wrestling coaches would prepare for a long rebuilding year after losing eight starters to graduation. Dowling Coach Bob Darrah instead is preparing for a possible Class 3-A state wrestling crown. Seven of his wrestlers won district championships and nine advanced to next week's state tournament as the second-ranked Maroons won the district wrestling meet at Ankeny Tuesday night. "We've got a pretty good bunch of kids," Darrah said after the Maroons outdistanced their nearest foe, Valley, by 46 points.

Darrah added that he was particularly pleased that the Maroons qualified a wrestler for state in the first four weight classes. Junior Jeff Carter, ranked third in Class S-A, started Dowling's championship-round successes with a 9-2 victory over Hoover's John Saunders at 98 pounds. Top-ranked Jeff DeBartolo and No. 4 Matt Egeland took district titles in 105 and 112 pounds respectively on decisions before the Maroons' Dave Kelso bowed to Urbandale's Jerry Towers in the 119 semifinal. Kelso, one of only three seniors on the Dowling squad, defeated Valley's Brian Clifford In a wrestle-back to take the runner-up slot Two of the final matches were decided in the waning moments.

At 126, Valley's Brian O'Meara broke a third-period tie with an escape with 49 seconds remaining to hold off Tech's Mitch Ealy. Ealy nearly won the match, however, when he placed a hold on O'Meara in the final :10. Tech coaches and fans thought Ealy had scored a takedown, but the referee ruled otherwise. At 185, East's Antoine Caldwell needed a takedown with :08 remaining in the third period to defeat the Maroons' George Davis. There were only two championship pins.

Dowling super-heavyweight Mark Neal pinned Urbandale's Todd Parsons in 2:54 Valley's Scott Johnson flattened the Jayhawks' Todd Patterson in 4:37 at 155. In the meet's only overtime match, Patterson lost a state tournament slot to Ankeny's Jerry Saddoris, 2-1, in a wrestle-back on a takedown with :25 remaining. The match was tied, 3-3, after regulation time, and remained scoreless until Patterson picked up one point on an escape with :45 left State-ranked wrestlers fared well. At 138, Dowling's Chris Campana, rated sixth, beat Ankeny's Dan Dullard, 5-1. At 145, the Maroons' Kelly Broderick handed Tech's Curt Crozier a 7-2 loss, while No.

3 heavyweight Mark Coffin battled to a 10-3 victory over Valley's Kevin Couch. No. 3 Jim Goodman of Urbandale also won his championship match at 167. Goodman defeated Valley's Brian Harrlman. JOHNSTON BOYS TOP BONDURANT Tlw Ro9fjhttirff lwi Nwt eMnrtCo) BONDURANT, IA.
