"I believe that they played about as well as they can play. Their defense really went after us." "Where we are we now, we couldn't have played much better," said K-State's Jim Dickey. "Our players couldn't have given any more of themselves. We told the team we BIG EIGHT STANDINGS Conference AH Games W. L.

"The cold may have caused some fumbles, but so did the shoulder pads and the helmets," said Dickey. "It seemed we played just well to win," said Osborne. "I really don't think you can excuse the number of fumbles we had. K-State just out-hit us." Defensive end Lawrence Cole' rambled 60 yards for a first-quarter score with an Interception return and Andra Franklin set up another score with a 38-yard run to seal the Huskers' victory. The Huskers, now 9-0 overall, led only 7-6 at halftime.

The upset-minded Wildcats jumped out to a 12-7 lead early in the third quarter. A two-point conversion pass was good, but nullified by an illegal procedure penalty. The next try failed. Nebraska was forced to punt on its next possession, but a fumble by K-State quarterback Darrell Dickey was recovered by the Huskers on the Wildcat 15. Three plays later Jerry i Wurth went over from the three for Nebraska.

Nebraska was threatening in the fourth period when quarterback Tim Hager fumbled to the Wildcats. But Darryl Black fumbled it back on the next play and with 7 minutes 39 seconds to play, Franklin took it in from the one. RUTGERS RIPS CADETS, 20-0 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Watts 2-7-1-33 RECIIVINa Kansas Uttlt J-40. mson j-jj. NORMAN, OKLA. (AP) -Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer said the Sooner defense played its best game en route to Saturday's 38-0 whitewash of Kansas. Jayhawk Coach Dan Fambrough wasn't one to argue with him.

"The turning point?" mused Fambrough. "The turning point of the game had to be when we realized we couldn move the ball, we couinn run, we couldn't pass. Billy Sims rushed for 128 yards and scored a touchdown to highlight the victory. The triumph didn come easy for the No. 6-ranked Sooners.

They led only 3-0 at the first quarter on Mike Keeling 30-yard field goal and 10-0 at the half on a four-yard run by quarterback J.C. Watts. But Oklahoma pushed ahead, 17-0, in the third quarter on a one-yard plunge by Sims, then exploded for 21 fourth-quarter points. The Sooner onslaught began when defensive tackle John Goodman picked off a fumble in mid-air and raced 56 yards for a touchdown. Despite getting favorable field position for much of the game, the Sooners who hurt themselves with several untimely penalties and turnovers had little success running wide on the rugged Kansas defense.

Perhaps the key play in the game came in the third quarter when the Sooners faced a third and goal situation from the nine after being assessed a five-yard penalty. Watts clawed his way to the one and Sims then tallied. "Another great job by the defense," beamed Switzer after the game. "I love to see them play that kind of defense. This Is the best game the defense has played this year." Fambrough said the Jayhawks tried everything they could to dent the Sooner defense but found nothing that worked consistently.

"This looks like the same Oklahoma team that I've been watching for the last 30 years," the Kansas coach added. "It's the same with Oklahoma and Nebraska. Great team speed and all that bit" WAKE FOREST BEATS DUKE WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -Wake Forest, boosted by halfback James McDougald's two touchdowns and 213 yards rushing, escaped Duke, 17-14, Saturday. The winning points for the 20th-ranked Deacons came on a field goal with 17 seconds to play.

The game was played in a rain storm. McDougald scored on runs of one and seven yards before kicker Frank Harnisch got the game-winning boot Duke tied the game in the third quarter when split end Cedric Jones caught a deflected pass and raced untouched into the end zone on an 80-yard scoring play. Jones scored Duke's first touchdown on a 97-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. McDougald, a senior, topped the rushing mark for the second time in his career. The victory improved Wake Forest's record to 8-2 and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The victory made Alabama's Paul "Bear" Bryant the first college football coach in modern times to win 100 games in a decade. A combination of a steady rain, 55-degree temperatures, a brisk wind, a slippery grass field and a couple of turnovers hampered Alabama's high-powered wishbone offense. But the Crimson Tide's defense, ranked third nationally, let LSU out of its own territory only twice. The Tigers' deepest drive was to the Alabama 42.
