(AP) Arnette Hallman scored 16 points Saturday as 17th-ranked Purdue beat the 18th-rated Hoosiers, 56-51, and grabbed sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference basketball race. Two Indiana starters fouled out of the game, including freshman sensation Isiah Thomas who scored 12 of the Hoosiers' last 15 points and pulled Indiana to within one at 52-51 with four minutes to go. Indiana, which trailed by seven points late in the first half and by five when Purdue center Joe Barry Carroll fouled out with five minutes left in the final period, had a chance for. the lead when Hallman committed his fourth foul with 1 minute 35 seconds to go. But Indiana freshman forward Steve Bouchie missed two freee throws, then fouled Purdue's Drake Morris, who gave the Boilermakers a 53-51 edge.

Thomas fouled out :27 later, and Brian Walker made one of two foul shots. Mike Scearce rebounded a missed Indiana shot and Walker was fouled twice more in the final :12, hitting two of three free throws to clinch the game. Keith Edmonson, whose basket and two free throws put Purdue ahead to stay with seven minutes to go, finished with 12 points for the Boilermakers, now 7-3 in the conference and 14-5 overall. Indiana, 6-4 and 13-6, was led by guard Butch Carter with 17 and by Thomas with 12. The loss spoiled Indiana Coach Bobby Knight's bid for his 300th career victory.

Indiana did not score for the first 4:30 of the game and made six quick fouls, including three on Thomas, who sat out the rest of the half. Purdue took several four-point leads, but the Boilermakers also got into foul trouble and the Hoosiers slowly battled back. After Carroll left the game with his third foul, Ray Tolbert hit two free throws and Landon Turner scored on a reverse layup to tie the game, 9-9. The Boilermakers led, 17-14, but Carter pulled the Hoosiers to within one, then freshman Chuck Franz hit a long jumper and Glen Grunwald, fouled on the same play, hit two free trows for a 20-17 Indiana lead with seven minutes left in the first half. Indiana still led by three when Hallman started an eight-point Purdue string.

A pair of free throws by Scearce put the Boilermakers back on top, then Kevin Stallings hit a field goal and Edmonson added two more foul shots before Carter scored for Indiana. Freshman center Ted Benson, playing for Carroll, hit two free throws and a basket to give Purdue its biggest lead at 31-24 before Turner cut the margin to 31-26 at intermission. In the second half, Indiana's shooting improved, but the fouls and errors kept Purdue ahead until Thomas caught fire midway through the period. The 6-foot 1-inch guard hit three straight baskets to give Indiana a 42-42 tie. Walker hit for Purdue and Carter tied it again before Edmonson put the Boilermakers back on top to stay.

Turner, trying to stop the 7-1 Carroll, fouled out in the second half, while Tolbert, Bouchie and Franz each had four fouls. uregory scorea a points aaiuruay, a of them in the second half, leading a Wisconsin rally that gave the Badgers a 70-67 Big Ten Conference basketball victory over Ohio State, their second upset of the Buckeyes in eight days. The loss dropped sixth-rated Ohio State from a share of the Big Ten lead, leaving the Buckeyes with a 6-4 conference record and 14-5 season mark. The Badgers are 4-6 and 12-9. Ohio State, which slipped from fourth to sixth in The Associated Press poll after losing to Wisconsin, 72-71, at Columbus last Saturday, led, 37-31, at the half, then opened a lead of up to 13 points before the Badgers started closing the gap. Wisconsin trailed, 59-54, when Gregory was fouled by Jim Elling-hausen with 5:19 to play.

Ohio State Coach Eldon Miller protested the call and the referees called a technical. Gregory, a 6-foot 8-inch junior forward, calmly dropped in four straight free throws to pull the Badgers to within one at 59-58, then tipped in a rebound 15 seconds later to put Wisconsin ahead. Ohio State's Kelvin Ransey and Wisconsin's Joe Chrnelich traded baskets, and then the Badgers' Wes Matthews, fouled by Carter Scott as he drove for the basket after a Wisconsin steal, tied the score, 63-63, with 3 minutes 9 seconds to go. A Clark Kellogg shot put the Buckeyes ahead, but Gregory's basket with 2:17 left tied the score again, 65-65. When Ransey missed a shot, Wisconsin got the rebound and then controlled the tip on a jump ball.

Center Larry Petty, fouled by Ransey with 1:43 remaining, put the Badgers ahead to stay, 66-65, before missing his second free throw. Gregory fouled the Buckeyes' Jim Smith, but he missed his shot and Gregory drew a foul with :13 left after getting the rebound, and he dropped in both shots to give the Badgers a 68-65 lead. Gregory fouled out with :04 left and Scott's two free throws pulled Ohio State to within one, 68-67, but then reserve guard Arnold Gaines was fouled Immediately by Ransey on the inbounds play and made both free throws with :02 left. Chrnelich grabbed Ohio State's downcourt pass and let fly a long shot that bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Ransey led Ohio State with 18 points, while Kellogg had 14 and Scott and Herb Williams 12 each.

Chrnelich added 14 and Matthews 13 for Wisconsin. It was the third loss in four outings for the Buckeyes, who followed up the last Wisconsin game with a 70-65 victory over Virginia on Sunday, then fell to Michigan State, 74-54, on Thursday night. Wisconsin Coach Bill Cofield said the Badgers' 12-point spurt in the second half "was definitely the turning point in the game." "Basketball is a game of momentum and spurts, and that spurt changed the whole outlook of the game," he said. Cofield said the victory was not as big as the 72-71 win last Saturday because "that game was on the road." Matthews normally shoots the free throws for the Badgers after a technical foul, and Cofield was asked why he decided to go with Gregory this time. "You can tell by looking at a guy if he's got it," said Cofield.

"You have a feeling. So I told Wes to tell Claude to shoot the free throws." Cofield said Gregory's performance was outstanding. The junior forward hit eight of 14 field goal attempts, made seven of eight from the line, and also pulled in nine rebounds. OHIO STATE (47) Kettoee 5 4-4 14, Smith 3 0-3 4. Reorganization saves WBL Does MILWAUKEE, WIS. (AP) The Milwaukee Does of the Women's Professional Basketball League announced Saturday that a major reorganization plan, aided by new financial backing and keyed to renewed community support, would allow the team to remain in Milwaukee. The team said the "11th hour effort to save the team for the city" involved players, coaches and league officials, as well as a new commitment of financing late Friday. Midland women beat South Dakota State I as rial IMsoetca la Rio Reetster FREMONT, NEB. Rhonda Field scored 21 points Saturday to power Midland past South Dakota State, 77-66, in women's college basketball.

Former East Des Moines prep Kan Kramme had eight points for Midland. Continued from Page One McHale, scored 15 points and hauled in six rebounds. Don't forget, Olson was very critical of Waite following the Purdue game. He thought the 6-foot 10-inch junior from Iowa City didn't have the intensity that night which is required to play in this rugged league. "The coach's dissatisfaction bad something to do with how I did tonight" Waite said afterward, "but I like to play against McHale and I like to play against Minnesota.

"Everybody put out a super effort. We refused to be intimidated by those long Minnesota arms." "Didn't Give an Inch" Olson said Waite "didn't give McHale (who scored 23 points a week earlier in Iowa's 80-73 victory over Minnesota in Iowa City) an inch." Boyle solved Minnesota's defense for seven field goals in 11 tries, finished with 14 points and led the Hawks with seven rebounds. Then there's Bob Hansen, the freshman from West Des Moines who was starting his first game as a college player. The kid showed a lot of poise in front of this mob of fans. He scored eight points and even nabbed four rebounds while playing all but 3 minutes.

"For a freshman starting for the first time," said Olson, "Hansen did a very good job," The former Dowling standout said he felt "comfortable" in the starting role. "When you start" he explained, "you can get into the flow of the game. For me, this was a great place to play. I enjoyed it in front of all those fans." The victory was Iowa's 13th in the last 16 meetings with Minnesota. That total includes two forfeit wins awarded the Hawks in 1977 when victories were taken away from Minnesota because of National Collegiate Athletic Association action.

Dutcher Mystified i Jim Dutcher, the Minnesota coach who is undoubtedly growing weary of losing to Iowa, was mystified as to why his team played so poorly. "If you're wondering if we should be ranked nationally," he "the answer is no. "We weren't mentally alert and we had bad hands on the Inside. We didn't react Iowa controlled McHale by doing a lot of sagging." It was the sagging that enabled Gary Holmes, a 6-10 sophomore, to do some heavy damage to Iowa In the first half. Holmes is called a center, but does as much shooting outside as a guard and he'd never had a night like he enjoyed in just one half Saturday.

Holmes came into the game with a 6.1 average and a season high of 12 points. But he ripped Iowa for 17 first-half points. The second half? Glad you asked. Holmes was shut out in the final 20 minutes. He played like the Gary Holmes of old.

Darryl Mitchell, a non-starter, led the Gophers with 18 points. It was Holmes' two free throws with three seconds left that provided Minnesota with a 37-35 halftime lead. After their horrible start, the Gophers began controlling the backboards midway through the half and bad Iowa on the run. "We aided them by giving them some easy shots," said Olson. "At halftime, I told the players that, when the crowd began making noise, to just be patient." Crowd Silenced The good thing was that the crowd wasn't able to make much noise after intermission.

Not the Minnesota crowd anyway. The Hawks went into the bonus free throw situation with 11:43 remaining in the game, and used that to a big advantage. They finished with 17 free throws to just five for Minnesota. The Gophers wound up with one more field goal and eight more rebounds, but so what? They only pay off in points. Arnold became a real floor general when Iowa was protecting its lead.

In all, he sank nine of 12 free throws -not letting his sore thumb get in the way of a big victory. The next thing you know, they'll be calling him another Ronnie Lester. Iowa went into a four-corner offense in the final five minutes. The Hawks used it to a big advantage. When they had a shot, they took it Like the time Waite got loose under the basket and made a fancy, reverse layup that gave his team a 61-53 lead.

By then Minnesota's frustrated fans got their only satisfaction by booing Iowa's cheerleaders whenever they came onto the floor. But the "Here we go, Hawkeyes" chant from the far reaches of an arena that will perhaps be closed permanently at the end of the season sounded pretty good. Indeed, all Iowa fans should be urging that Minnesota come up with the $8 to 10 million it's going to take to repair Williams Arena. The Hawks play pretty darned well here, so why would they want to move to another place? The Reels tar's lews News Service DUBUQUE, IA.
