A Christian Plea for Wandering Jews To the Open Forum Editor: As a human being, as a Christian, and as an American, I object to the treatment of 900 Jews aboard the ship "St Louis." Surely our country is not so near sinking to the bottom of the sea but that we could shelter these tortured people until some permanent settlement could be made. If we turn aside those unhappy souls now, something tells me that some day we, too, may plead for mercy, and when we don't get it we may die BIG BUSINESS AND FRIGHT Reader Wonders. What Scared It Under Hoover.

To the Open Forum Editor: We hear a lot about the fear of the New Deal paralyzing business and so many of the big corpora tions putting on a big campaign now urging the voters to petition their representatives in Washington to oppose the policies of the New Deal. If big business is scared now into para lysis, what scared them, when Hoover was looking hoover. around that corner so long? I believe most people can remember how scared they were when the banks were closing their doors by the hundreds over the nation every day. Who was it that came along with prompt and decisive action, stopped the panic and restored confidence? Banks Declared Safer. Today the banks are safer and bankers have fewer nightmares than ever in their previous exist ence.

The record of this admin istration has to its credit more helpful legislation than all previous administrations put togeth er for the benefit of all. The clamor of the big fellows now fools only those who want to be fooled. For the first time In his tory, in a depression the government has had a regard for the unemployed. H. P. Smlt, Holland, la. G.O.P. REGIME IS ASSAILED No Improvement Over the Democrats It Noticed.

To tha Opes Forum Editor: If the Republican regime in Iowa has been any improvement over that of the Democrats, then the writer has been much mlsin fqrmed. The consolidation bill was a real imposition upon the laborer and farmer. The real Intention of this bill was not one of economy but as a means of co-ordinating th police powers of the state into the hands of one single official to be used when the occasion required and not against any Invasion of outsiders. Just why did the Republicans appropriate $250,000 a year for a national guard, and raise the pay of the national guard to $2 a day while on duty It would seem that here is an item which could be cut down about $200,000 a year without Inconveniencing anyone Taxes. What happened to the Louisiana chain store tax bill? We know.

Now with reference to taxes, we have more kinds now thsn ever, For instance, a tax on butterfat is supposed to "encourage the sale of butter," or was It intended to create another commission about which the Republicans have had so much aversion in the past. It would seem that a greater tax on oleomargarine and none on but terfat would have the tendency to encourage the sale of butter. In Wisconsin, a tax of 15 cents a pound and a license of $1,000, to sell oleomargarine, the substitute for butter, was enacted. This looks more reasonable. Silence.

In a previous election, the Re publican spellbinders who were successful In the last election, spouted considerably concerning the Injustice of the Iowa sales tax but they were mighty silent when they had a chance to do something about It. off on the present Republican administration, or rather mis-admin istration, of Iowa. This story deals with the for bidding of the Iowa highway patrol to wear uniforms which would make them resemble Hitler's stormtroopers In Nazi Germany. The story shows the ridiculous ness of the present regime of George, the First, in the State-house for it only emphasizes the dictatorship that has been set up in Iowa. As for my psrt and my opinion of the present highway patrol system with its N. B.

With such prejudicial publicity, how can a fair and Impar tial jury be selected? On Collecting Debts.

An honest effort on the part of a creditor to collect a just debt by accusing or threatening to ac cuse the debtor of a crime with which the debt is connected, or out of which it arose, does not come within the purview of the statute; nor should the statute be construed as covering the case of an owner who demands from the offender a reasonable compensa tion for property which the latter has stolen or embezzled and ac companies the demand with I threat to accuse the offender of a crime. Such is the law. Were it other wise, our country would be a verl table paradise for thieves and embezzlers. Prejudicial publicity of this type can come mighty close to the obstruction of the due administration of justice. Edward O'Connor, Dee Moines.

JEW, CHRISTIAN GROUP ASSAILED Contributor Accuses Conference of Dabbling in World Politic. To the Open Forum Editor: May the Register publish this. The Iowa Conference of Jews and Christians dabbles in politics, especially the international brand. In Spain they teamed with Russia and unruly Loyalists, and not with a church that values law and order. But say this, and presto, they ihoot back that bishops support them and that a priest is on their team.

In their forums they spew the names of Mussolini and Hitler; but not the names of Lenin, Trotsky, Litvinov or Stalin. I am not saying that the conference is communistic, but it does not rough-handle wellknown communistic names. Mussolini and Religion. But Mussolini has made no war on religion. "I concluded by Invoking the assistance of God.

Well, this sentence of mine seemed to be out of place. In the Italian parliament, a field of action for Italian masonry, the name of God had been banned for a long time. Not even the Catholic party had ever thought of speaking of God." Mussolini doesn't hide his own belief. I quote from his autobiography. Hitler has a concordat with the Catholic church and the Lutheran church is recognized In the law.

No doubt, the churches and the stats might get along better, and we hope they will. Hitler and Germany. Some atheists are loud in Germany, Hitler and Nazi-ism are blamed. Some men are teaching atheism to young minds here. Are Roosevelt and the school system to blame? Has not Hitler, too, invoked the divine name Has he ever declared himself an atheist? Mussolini took Ethiopia.

England, the democracy, didn't curse him for it Hitler has made no war. He has extended his influence in central Europe. England is tending to her fences in western Asia. Fort Madison, la. SPIRITUAL LIFE PROMISED ALL Contributor Declares It Can Be Attained by Everyone. To the Open Forum Editor: The piece in The Register June 5 written by a staff writer giving the opinion of Bishop J. Ralph Magee in a sermon before the class at Simpson college Sunday seemed misleading to me in many respects. In the first place our power of comprehension comes from within, through obedience to the spirit.

The power of comprehending anything worthwhile la not handed down through another's personal ity, but as rewards we have earned by experience. The power of comprehending truths is the unfolding or spiritual growth of the material man to spiritual life, and can be attained by all. If, as Bishop Magee says, some cannot attain such power by the most arduous effort; why punish criminals who have tried and failed? Well can Bishop Magee say "we can increase our information for material or spiritual comprehen sion or discover fields of knowl edge which we were not aware we possessed." When we learn the natural laws of life by obedience to the spirit we can Increase our power of understanding through the rewards given us by the spirit. Bishop Magee made the statement that society should be made to contribute more of value to others. The safest route is one's own society, In other words, I consider we are in the best of society when we are alone with life.

C. S. Andrews, Cincinnati, la. Writer Sees Chance For Democrats. To tha Opaa Forum Editor: In September you printed a letter of mine regarding the abuse of patients at the Cherokee hospital I said at that time that I did not see how any one, after reading the testimony in that case could exonerate those In charge as did two members of the board of control.

At least 30 senators and the governor believed the same as I did. I was called an agitator at that time because I did not be lieve in abuse, neglect, and mis management of our Insane patients, as I had seen and knew what was going on at Cherokee. No Change Expected. Now I wonder if the people of our state believe that abuse and neglect will stop because they have removed the old board of control? Rest assured that with the same people in charge of our institutions who were and are responsible for the things that were presented and proven before the senate, causing the oust ing of tha board, our Institutions will receive the same treatment as in the past. In the name of God and humanity, why can not we, In the state of Iowa, have some organization that is big enough to make our state hospitals a place of comfort and pleasure to our unfortunates rather than a place ol hell? Afraid.

And until such an organiza tion does get behind such a movement, relatives will continue to be afraid to send their loved ones to our state Institutions; for after all these months and of all the cases of abuse and neglect. politicians have done nothing. The old board has gone; a new board la in power. The men and women responsible for abuses are still in charge. It surely will be something for the Democrats to carry forward two years hence.

Joe E. Gale, 1121 Fifteenth Sioux City, Is, GREED BLAMED FOR DEPRESSION No President Said to Have Power to Abate Slump. To the Open Forum Editor: President Roosevelt did not create the depression. He has not the power to have done so. None of our presidents, not even Hoover, who has been so maligned, nor any other person has power to cause or abate it The half civilized, the civilized and the so-called enlightened peoples and nations wrought It In their mad rush for greed and love of money, which love, but not the money, is the root of evil.

Wealth brings power, therefore the love of money, and of power, is behind all evil. The Creator gave his people laws, the observance of which would preserve their nationality. We have flouted His laws and have been disobedient and are receiving severe, but just, punishment for our evil doing. The depression will end either at the end of this age or at the return of the people to His righteous rule. A.

Record Bible Sales Declared Unjustified To tha Open Forum Editor: In regard to your editorial of June 4, "The Bible Always Going Strong," according to my conclusions and analysis of the great problem you need not lament on the sorrowful situation of the Bible being ahead of you in sales. The sellers of the Bible are not Justified in their sales records. For one reason they use emotionalism too much. Many Bibles are bought to be given as gifts.

A sort of propaganda like that put out by the dictators. Another reason for the record Bible sales is because of parents dictating to their youngsters. The youngsters must have their Bibles. Parents live in the past age you know, or should know. Kenneth Bates, 1200 Iowa Muscatine, la.

Nobody knows what "nordics" really are, but I stand as good a chance as any of being that "The alleged ringleaders Otto and Amos Schreck are scheduled to go on trial In Wriht county district court in September." Where did the feature writer get this information? These charges are NOT YET in the district court and won't be unless the next September grand jury returns indictments. But Mr. Gammack writes that Sheriff Lefty Wilson "tells the story of how store clerks were detected in petty thievery and then 'sweated' into paying out large amounts." Was Lefty present when the "sweating" was going on and, if so, why did he permit it? Statement Called Untrue. I can assure the public that Sheriff Lefty Wilson of Wright county has absolutely no personal knowledge concerning these transactions.

This feature reporter writes that a grocery clerk "was persuaded to pay the "Millard Service' $100 in cash, an automobile worth 450, a 100 fur coat, and an insurance policy which was cashed in for $78." This statement is absolutely untrue. This woman never paid a cent to the Millard Service. Why didn't Mr. Gammack tell the public that this grocery clerk signed a written confession, in the presence of her employer, wherein she admitted that she had embezzled $1,000 from him. Such a written statement was Introduced in evidence in open court before Justice of the Peace Glen Oldham at Clarion.

The Iowa Code provides that the defendant's former conviction of a felony can never be shown to the trial jury until after the defendant takes the witness stand in his own defense. Then why should Opinion Could Force Prosecution Declared Favored by Its "Propaganda." To the Open Forum Editor: As legal counsel for Amos and Otto Schreck, it is my duty to take serious exception to a feature story written by Gordon Gammack and published in last Sunday's Des Moines Register under the caption of, "Iowa Probing an 'Extortion Racket Ring'." This story reeked with Inflammatory propaganda favoring the prosecution. It painted the ac cused as operators of a far-flung extortion racket, and pictured the embezzling employes as persecuted martyrs entitled to publio sympathy and acclaim. Why such a feature story should be written concerning these pending charges at this particular time la beyond the comprehension of this writer. The intent and motive of The Register in apparently attempting to prejudice the entire public against these Schreck brdthers is most certainly brought under suspicion.

Feature Writer Gammack pens; an honest living. He says that thousands are not poor and needy because of exploitation but because of their own greed, lack of self-reliance and extravagent habits. So far as our people being Industrious, willing to save and live within their means, we have been too much that way. It Is fitting that we and view record. The voter must pare that record with platform and campaign promises In order to cast an intelligent ballot. He is Interested In what was done and how, also In what was not done and why, and why a legisla ture must labor so long to bring forth so little of major importance. To understand this he must have some conception of the magnitude of the state's business and of the rules of the game MIGHELL. of their legal documents to be In full compliance with the law.

Remove these and other obstacles which are made use of to evade the Issues and the legislature can accomplish mors constructive work in half the time. Senate Districts Another obstacle to representative government of special Interest to northwest Iowa Is the refusal of proportional representation in the senate as provided by the Constitution. For comparison Jackson county in eastern Iowa with about the same population as Cherokee has one senator while Cherokee is joined with Plymouth and Ida. The districts north of us are still mors out of line. A bill to remedy this situation was sponsored by all the senators in this territory.

It died In sifting committee even though all members had taken an oath to support the constitution. Combine this picture with a partisan control under a reactionary leadership that stooped to the sharpest practices to stifle all opposition and enforce the game of "follow the leader" and you have the answer to how and why. As Senator Breen tersely stated, "The Democrats lost their shirts in the election and the Republicans lost theirs when they adopted the rules." About G.O.P. Platform Nesrly half of the Republican platform was devoted to agriculture and farm tenancy. Nothing was done for either except a final weak gesture which had to be wrung like blood from the nose.

in the other, which was the general Impression in the case of the teachers' pension bill when passed in the senate. The remedy is an aroused public opinion that will demand a liberalization of the rules and the abolition of secret ballots in committees. The cry of precedents and necessity to save time will be heard. But the real reasons are the natural aversion of members to standing up for the count, the accommodation of the third house, and, above all, the loss of the most powerful weapons to control legislation by party leaders and vested Interests. Pet Peeves Opposed The voter must learn to judge his representative by the weighted record as a whole and not by some pet peeve.

He can only learn to do this by practice when the latter has to come out from behind the cloak of hypocrisy and stand on his own. This assembly deserves credit for taking one step In the right direction when it provided for an interim claims committee of four members. This work previously consumed a large share of the time of 30 members during the session. A similar disposition should be made of legalizing and corrective acts. A proper committee working under the guidance of the attorney general's office and code editor could save many days of the session's time.

Most of these bills are for the purpose of removing possible doubts that may arise from the acts of political subdivisions or corporations, because their attorneys are never sure the courts will hold the wording The governor said In his messsge to the legislature: "Through no fault of their own, many of our best farmers were compelled by force of circumstances to give up their farms to holders of loans. As a result corporations have acquired vast holdings. We suggest that your efforts be directed to the end that the laws may be liberalized so that disposition of these lands may be had more readily on contract with a reasonable payment down and equitable annual payments thereafter. Let us use every effort to make possible the transfer of the soil to the man who tills it Let us encourage farm ownership and discourage farm tenancy." On Spending Millions The platform said: "We will stop the spending of needless millions of taxpayers' money." They discovered that there was need for spending more and did. The crowning sin of this, however, was the refusal to allot some of it for the relief of the overcrowded condition in our state institutions a growing menace and a disgrace to the fair name of our state.

The platform said the conditions "will carry out the program outlined In this platform as a solemn duty to the citizens of our state, without technical reservation or evasion." Also, "A group of individuals hss stolen the machinery of the Democratic party." I wonder what group got away with the elephant's trunk and all the jewels so soon sfter the platform was written. Wlnfred Mlghell, state senator, Holsteln, la. adopted for passing laws. Legislation has become a game with the cards stacked in advance. The major part of the time during legislative hours Is taken up with routine work such as claims and other appropriation bills, legalizing and corrective acts.

It is easy to keep the assembly busy with the lesser affairs of state while holding back in the various committees all controversial bills until they can be bottled up in the sifting committee.
