Along with NBC and CBS national and regional games and a flood of games on cable's ESPN, Des Moines-area TV stations and Heritage Ca-blevision of Des Moines have lined up plenty of additional contests. Here is a quick rundown: WHO-TV Along with televising just about every University of Iowa game this season, WHO will present the Big Ten Conference package of games that begins the weekend of Jan. 4.

The Big Ten package will feature games each Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m., along with three Wednesday night games. WOI-TV Eight Iowa State University games will be broadcast by the Cyclone Television Network, which also includes KGAN-TV in Cedar Rapids, KLJB-TV in Davenport and KCAU-TV in Sioux City (three games, only). Among the eight games is the Iowa vs. Iowa State showdown at Ames on Dec. 10.

(KIMT-TV in Mason City also will carry that WOI also plans to present two Big Eight Conference games every Saturday afternoon from Jan. 11 through March 7. KCBR-TV The deal isn't final yet, but KCBR is trying to land the Missouri Valley Conference package of Saturday afternoon games. Heritage Cablevision The Des Moines cable operator landed the rights to the Drake vs. Iowa (Dec.

3) and Drake vs. Iowa State (Dec. 7) games in Des Moines, which they plan to telecast over the Iowa Cable Network that covers most of central Iowa. Heritage, in turn, sold broadcast rights to the Drake-Iowa game to KWWL-TV in Waterloo and WOC-TV in Davenport How did the cable company get these plum games? Apparently, Drake University decided to market the games as a package deal a situation that did not appeal to WOI (borne of the Cyclone TV Network) or to the five-station Iowa Television Network that broadcasts Hawkeye games. Bob Helmers of WOI says as early as last summer Drake was packaging the two big games in connection with trying to get a sponsor for its Drake Classic tournament on Dec.

13-14. That tournament is now known as the Heritage-Drake Classic tourney. Heritage paid Drake a sponsor's fee "well into five figures," according to one television industry source, but is not being allowed, to televise any of the tourney games this year because Drake feels it might hurt attendance. Heritage also will sponsor the tournament in 1986 and has an option for 1987. KCCI-TV has no additional basketball games scheduled other than those shown on CBS.

KCAU-TV's reorganization There were two news blackouts last week. The one in Geneva, Switzerland, was lifted after two days. The one at KCAU-TV in Sioux City is still in effect Six days after a major belt-tightening effort at KCAU by its new owner, Citadel Communications there is precious little confirmation or explanation by station officials of what changes were made and why they were made. According to sources at the station, 22 jobs (about 25 percent of the staff) were eliminated. Philip Lombardo, president of Citadel and acting general manager at KCAU, did not return repeated phone calls to his office last week.

Ray Cole, the former station manager and general sales manager who has assumed the duties of director of broadcast operations for KCAU, sidestepped questions when reached for comment. Is 22 an accurate figure of the number of people laid off? "I honestly couldn't tell you, I've been too busy this week," said Cole. "This very difficult task was never approached with a number count in mind." Why were the cutbacks made? "We approached it with the idea of seeing how we could provide a better product for our viewers and our advertisers Our concern is a better product." Cole preferred to talk about the "significant promotions" that were made. He referred all other questions to Lombardo.
