Louis, was almost instantaneous. "Des Moines through St, Louis to Nashville will make a highly practical line," Jackson declared. "It will open the southeast to Florida and South America on-transcontinental lines for Des Moines and will, in addition to doing that for St. Louis, give us a diagonal transcontinental route to the northwest." The plan is contingent on completion of the proposed north-south airline from St. Paul and Minneapolis, through Des Moines to Kansas City.

Application lias been made lor the route by Mid-Continent Air Lines and officials consider its approval by the civil aeronautics authority almost a certainty. Initial Step. First step toward realization of the Des Moines-Nashville route would be submission of an application for the rights by some air transport company to the civil aeronautics authority. Should it be granted, the company would establish the line and then apply to the postoffice department for mail rights. The proposed route between Des Moines and Nashville would be a great forward step in mail service to the southeast, the group explained, because mail from St.

Louis is now routed through Washington, to the south. Highly Pleased. St. Louis has been pressing for a St. Louis-to-Nashville route about two years, Jackson and Brikner said.

They were highly pleased by the possibilities offered in the Des Moines suggestion. Members of the group agreed that the postoffice department could not consider approving such a line this fiscal year because the full appropriation has been allocated. They said, however, that they felt the north-south line, application for which already has been made, is included in the current appropriation. An Hour by Air. St.

Louis is slightly over one hour by air from Des Moines. The Des Moines delegation explained the Des Moines municipal airport development project under way to enlarge the port to a mile square area with paved runways. The tentative route of the proposed line to Nashivlle would pass directly over Ottumwa, and that city was considered a possible only stop between Des Moines and Pt. Louis. The Ottumwa airport, however, is not at present large enough to accommodate the large planes now in use.

The "feeder" conference is held primarily to show the commercial possibilities of small air lines, serving as "feeders" to the transcontinental mail and passenger air routes. The fundamental plan is similar to that used in Iowa during National Airmail week when 29 planes made state-wide pickups of mail in Iowa in two hours and 30 minutes.
