It is getUng to be a costly proposition for Iowa State to sever the contracts of basketball coaches. By a unanimous vote Tuesday the university's Athletic Council accepted the resignation of Lynn Nance and agreed to pay him $36,300 over the next 13 months as a settlement for the remaining two years on his contract. Nance, who bad surprisingly asked Iowa State President W. Robert Parks and the Council to work out an arrangement so he could leave immediately, will be paid in monthly installments through Feb.

It was a sales pitch for what the publisher spoke of as an indispensable book, "Coaching the Special Teams." But after due thought, possibly for one second, the folks at the Holy Nativity Pre-School in Westchester where the students range from ages 2V4 to 5 decided the kids should continue learning all phases of the game. Well, shades of Shirley Temple, never underestimate the contnbu tions kids can make to sports. Joe bnsminger, an official in Missouri, O.V recalls a coin toss oeiore a sevenm-lil grade girls' vol- leyball game.

"I told the visiting i captain to call the coin while was in the air," says Ensminger, meaning shmibv to call heads or tails. "After a short, perplexed look at the turning coin she said, 'It's a Naturally, she won the toss." I'd hope so! However, kids are not the only sources of unexpected wisdom. Grandmothers also contribute. Bob Stevenson is Tulsa's top rebounder and scorer, despite a wrist fracture and a severe elbow gash during the season. "I learned a lot about playing with pain when I was 10," he explains.

"I was pitching Softball at a family picnic. My grandmother hit a shot that got me right in the stomach and I doubled over, crying. "She ran to first, then came over to see me. She said, 'Bob, you've got to learn to cry later if you're going to succeed in sports. You should have thrown me out, then I've remembered that ever since." TEX WINTER has spent 22 of 26 seasons coaching basketball at Kansas State, Washington and Northwestern which feature the same school color.

"I've seen so much purple, I feel bruised," insists Tex, who now wears the brown and gold of Long Beach State. My Neighbor Walt says that when it comes to giving, some people stop at nothing. Thank you, kind folks, who pointed out that I meant Roger Maris' 61 homers were 4 percent (rather than .04) of the American League total in 1961. Figures hate me. I'm positive they jump about after I have put them on paper.

All that's missing is a title. Tonight, starting at 8:35 o'clock (Iowa time), an Iowa State team minus its head coach and a regular forward meets a Colorado club with only eight scholarship players available. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman has nothing on Lynn Nance, Bob Fowler. Nance was officially relieved of his duties as Iowa State's head coach Tuesday and Rick Samuels and Reggie Warford, Nance's two top assistants, will serve as co-coaches until a new coach is named. Fowler, a starting forward, was declared ineligible for the rest of the season because he played in an Amateur Athletic Union game Sunday.

Fowler's decision apparently came shortly after an incident late in Saturday's victory over Oklahoma State. Fowler hurled his jersey into the crowd after being heckled by fans at Hilton Coliseum. He then stalked to the dressing room and was gone by the time the game ended. Samuels and Warford have attempted to close ranks by making Cyclone practices off limits to the press. "The medical staff feels Lester has a slight re-sprain of his right knee. Coach Lute Olson said Tuesday, "and he won't make the trip with us. At this point, I don't know when he'll be back." The Hawkeyes leave today for West Lafayette, where they play Purdue Thursday night After that, they continue on to Minneapolis, for a Saturday night game with Minnesota. Olson said Lester, a senior with a 16-point average, was in the hospital for "further tests." The week began on a positive note for the squad. Lester had missed six games because of the knee injury first suffered Dec.

The victories gave the Hawks a 4-4 Big Ten record, and hopes certainly hadn't evaporated for a high finish in the final standings. Indeed, some optimists were thinking Iowa still had a chance to challenge for the title. But then came Monday's practice. "Lester was hurt when he went up on an uncontested short jump shot early in practice," said Olson.

Thus, in a period of five years the Cyclones will have spent $81,300 for two men not to coach their basketball team.

Ken Trickey, Nance's predecessor, was fired in the middle of the 1975-76 season when he had coached only a year and a half on a three-year contract Trickey was paid in a lump sum for the time he had left about $45,000. Word began circulating last weekend that Nance, 37, might be finished, and it became definite Monday when rumors of his departure were confirmed by Roy Keller, chairman of the Athletic Council, and Athletic Director Lou McCullough. All that remained was for the full Council to approve the recommended settlement at Tuesday's special meeting in the Olsen athletic office building. Amicable Separation In view of Nance's unhappy dealings with McCullough and the Council last year, when they seemingly were denying him a contract extension he thought he should have received, and later did get, the final separation was amicable and without incident The Council took its action with a minimum of discussion, although there was a 45-minute closed session to keep some of the details private, and later Nance held a press conference to say be was leaving "without bitterness." In a prepared statement, the coach said he had initiated the termination of his contract by meeting with President Parks on Jan. 15, telling him "that for various reasons I didn't feel the Iowa State basketball program was going to be able to reach the goals my staff and I bad set" He asked that the machinery be set In motion for a mutually acceptable end to his contract, which was done through meetings with Keller and a special five-person committee of the Athletic Council Tracy Clark, a professor of veterinary medicine, served as chairperson of this committee and made the recommendation that Nance be given one more year in severance pay.

Saying he leaves with no bitterness, Lynn Nance stepped aside Tuesday as Iowa State's basketball coach.

Nance's statement came shortly after the Iowa State Athletic Council approved a proposal to terminate Nance's contract, which had two years to run, and to pay him one year's salary. That figure is $33,500 but Nance actually will get more than that since he will be paid for February of this year, and will then receive monthly payments for the year ending Feb. 28, 1981. "I have no direct plans for now," said Nance. "I will stay in coaching if possible.

Right now I have to get my feet on the ground." Nance did not appear at the Athletic Council meeting where the details of his leaving were worked out and approved. He held a press conference later at Hilton Coliseum. On another level in the building, the Iowa State team was practicing under the two Nance assistants, Reggie Warford and Rick Samuels, who will be in charge of the team until a hew coach is named. At the Athletic Council meeting, several references were made to "problems" that existed between Nance and the athletic department. Nance and McCullough clashed openly a year ago after Nance said he did not feel he was getting proper support from the athletic department. Nance said there was no pressure on him to resign from any source. "In fact, when I talked to Dr.

Parks he asked me to reconsider and said my future here was bright," Nance said. Nance said be decided to ask Parks and the Athletic Council to find a way for him to get out of the Iowa State post after "I determined that I could not get the job done." Not a Sudden Decision Nance added: "This was not a sudden decision. It came about after a long period of time. In fact I met with Dr. Parks two days after our victory over Kansas." Nance said his decision to leave immediately rather than finish out this season was based on several factors.

"I'm leaving to facilitate the work of a new coach," said Nance, pointing out that as a lame-duck coach, he could not recruit players for the school. "My presence on the floor after this would be counter-productive. I think when a coach decides to resign be should do it right then." The Athletic Council was told that Nance, in seeking to get out of his contract with Iowa State, listed NANCE Please turn to Page 3S THE NEW MOTOROLA QUIET CB CR720 Auto Radio Sales 1 Srvtc, inc. 1414lt 318-6124 "It's homey" history to go straight from the White House to the Out House," is Pepper Rodger' latest quip.
