The five members of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission expressed their sentiments after a daylong public hearing on casino proposals in Johnston.

The commission is considering 10 applications for licenses in seven communities, including three in Waterloo, two in Emmetsburg and one each in Ottumwa, Fort Dodge, near Riverside, and in rural Worth and Franklin counties. Commission Chairwoman Diane Hamilton of Storm Lake was joined by Commissioners Gerald Bair of An-keny and Joyce Jarding of Farley in expressing support for awarding three to five new licenses. Commissioner Michael Mahaffey of Montezuma said he couldn't see granting more than two or three licenses, while Commissioner Kate Cutler of Honey Creek favored awarding two to six new licenses. "We don't want to issue so many licenses that a year down the road we have a casino in trouble," Hamilton said. "This" is the 37-year-old West Des Moines resident's run at being the first female winner of NBCs ultimate corporate contest, The Apprentice." Tana, who's never wanted to work for anyone but herself, now wants a job with Donald Trump. The final goal is the easiest to analyze. The current season began with 18 contestants, divided into a "Street Smarts" team and a "Book Smarts" team. Tana, who never finished her final semester of college, was placed with the "Street Smarts" group. She must make it through two more of the show's boardroom eliminations to be the big winner.

Tonight, Tana and two other finalists will be interviewed by top CEOs, and one will be fired. Next week, the last two will go head-to-head on two projects: competing in a PlayStation video game tournament and working on New York City's bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The conclusion is May 19, when Trump hires one of the two contestants. See GOERTZ, Page 4A ON TV "The Apprentice" airs at 8 tonight on NBC. WHAT'S NEXT? AIDS drug test put kids at risk ASSOCIATED PRESS Research paid for by the National Institutes of Health tested AIDS drugs on foster children in at least seven states over two decades, often without providing them protections prescribed by federal law, an Associated Press review has found. The practice ensured that the children received care from qualified researchers at government expense, extending their lives. But it also exposed them to risks and sometimes to side effects. No deaths were directly attributed to the treatments.
