EASTERLY'S WHITE CORN IS A WINNER If it be true that be'. wbo makes two blades of grass grow where only one grew before is a public benefactor. then he who takes the native Indian corn and gives it a distinctive form, type and pedigree, creates a variety that is better in quality and better in vield, he DO less confera a public benefit. B.

G. Easterly, who lives three miles weat of Carbondale, at has perfected a type of corn which in a recent four-year test for yield per acre bas defeated sixteen of the old standard varieties of Illinois corn OD untreated Southern Illinois soil. This corn is known AB Easterly'a White. The University of Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station has just issued a bulletin on Yields of DiRerent Varieties of Corn in Illinois." This "Bulletin No: has this to aay: well fertilized in Southern Illinois, Funk's 90 Day' baa given the highest yield of any variety which bas been tested for four years or more. The other leading high.

yielding varieties, tested on fertilized for a minimum of four years are Ried'a Yellow Dent, Perrine'8 White Pearl and Chinese Poor Land. On untreated land, Champion White Pearl, Perrine's White Pearl, 'and Easterly's White have been the higheat yielders for three years. (1911- connection with the regular work on the crop field at Fairfield, (additional tests were made on untreated land close to the field. Champion White Pearl, Perrine's White Pearl and Easterly's White varieties have been grown in Southren Illinois until they have become well adapted to conditions obtaining there. Varieties such as Reid's Yel-.

low Dent and Funk's 90 Day, which have been grown under the favorable soil conditions of Central Illinois, cannot compete with adapted varieties on the poor land of Southern Illinois." It must be known that Easterly'a White was grown in competition with 17 other standard varieties, and this. leada us to 8 brief history of Easterly's White. Says the bulletin: 'Easterly's White was developed from Boone Coanty White. The original seed was secured from Mr. A.

P. Grout in. 1901. Mr. E.

G. Easterly of Jackson County, Illinoia, changed the name to Easterly's White. Ordinarily the variety. developes fully in 115 to 125 And further the bulletin says: 'Boone County White was originated by Mr. James Riley in Indiana in 1876.

The parent type was known as White Mastodon, which WAB a costae, late-maturing variety. In 1882 some of the seed was brought to Champaign county by Mr. 0. C. Black.

The variety matures in 115 to 125 days." So here we have "pedigreed coro." Easterly's White can be traced through field and: crib, througb improvement, cultivation and selection for 40 years; until it has become a distioct type. And more than that it has become a type adapted to the untreated soils of Southern Illinois. Nearly everybody in Illinois who is interested in agriculture bas heard of H. G. Easterly.

He was for a Illinois great many Farmers' years a Institute director from of the 25th Congressional Dietrict, and was. made president. of the State Insti: tule. Be took as old -out Jackson county farm and has built it up, made it productive and profitable. Illinois needs more men like the GOAD who has originated and bred Easterig's White.
