www.youngcolonial.com Former NFL owner Art Modell, 87, who never made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died Thursday, ap Moved team to Baltimore in 1996 By David Ginsburg Associated Press BALTIMORE Former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell, 87, died early Thursday, the longtime NFL stalwart who incurred the wrath of Cleveland fans when he moved the team from Ohio and admittedly tarnished his own legacy as a civic leader. David Modell said he and his brother, John, were at their father's side when he "died peacefully of natural causes." Modell was among the most important figures in the NFL as owner of the Cleveland Browns and a league insider. During his four decades as a team owner, he helped negotiate the NFL's lucrative contracts with television networks, served as president of the NFL from 1967 to 1969, and chaired the negotiations for the first The move was also believed to be the main reason why Modell never made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was one of 15 finalists in 2001 and a semifinalist seven times between 2004 and 2011. The Ravens won their lone Super Bowl in January 2001, less than a year after Modell sold a minority interest of the team to Steve Bisciotti.

In April 2004, Bisciotti completed purchase of the franchise but left Modell a 1 percent share. "He worked alongside Lamar Hunt, Tex Schramm, Well Mara and Art Rooney, and all of those men are in the Hall of Fame," former Browns guard John Woo-ten said. "He worked with them in all of those meetings. He was there. It is indeed a shame that he is not in the Hall of Fame." NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised Modell's work within the league as it was gaining momentum a half century ago.

the collective bargaining agreement with the players in 1968. He also was the driving force behind the 1970 contract between the NFL and ABC to televise games on Monday night. Modell, however, made one decision that hounded him the rest of his life. He moved the Cleveland franchise to Baltimore in 1996 and Ohio fans never forgave him for it. "It's a shame that one decision hurt how some people think of him, because he did so much good," said Doug Dieken, a Browns offensive lineman for 14 years.

Practically overnight, the man who was one of Cleveland's most notable civic leaders was a pariah in his own community. "I have a great legacy, tarnished somewhat by the move," he said in 1999. "The politicians and the bureaucrats saw fit to cover their own rear ends by blaming it on me." Calvin "Cal" McCormack Ira Twp. Calvin "Cal" McCormack, age 88, of Ira died September 3, 2012. He was born August 14, 1924 to the late James and Pearl McCormack.

Cal served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was owner and contractor of Bay River Tile and a member of FOE, VFW, AMVETS and of C. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann H. McCormack; sons, Danny (Tracy), Jeff (Lori) and Daren McCormack; daughters, Sharon (Edward) Lofek and Susan (David) Wilcox; 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild; and sisters, Alice Beith, Betty Cirello and Barbara Reinhold.

He was predeceased by brother; James McCormack and sister Gloria Nixon. Private family services have been conducted. Memorials may be made to St. John's Hospice. Arrangements by Young Funeral Home, China Twp.

www.youngcolonial.com Ferrer gets past Tipsarevic in 5 his Davis Cup teammate and good pal Djokovic. On Thursday, he hit one shot by thrusting his racket around his back and closed another point by doing the splits while flipping up a lob. "It was a really, really tough match," Ferrer said. "Janko he's an amazing player and he also deserves to win today." Until now, Tipsarevic might have been best known for the large tattoos in Japanese lettering on his arms. The one on the left borrows a line from Fyodor Dostoyev-sky's "The "Beauty will save the world." The tennis highlight for Tipsarevic to this point probably was joining Djokovic to help Serbia win the 2010 Davis Cup title.

After ending that season ranked 49th, Tipsarevic jumped into the top 10 in 2011. He entered Thursday's match only 4-22 against the ATP's top five, but one of those victories was over Ferrer. Olympic champion Andy Murray and 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych who eliminated 17-time major champion Roger Federer in four sets earned their semifinal berths Wednesday. Ferrer is the only man left who has never reached a Grand Slam final. He had various issues Thursday, including a dispute over a line call early in the fifth, and a bothersome toe on his right foot that a trainer worked on in the third removing Ferrer's sneaker and sock and using a pair of nail clippers to help fix things.

At another changeover, Ferrer gestured wildly while exhorting himself between bites of a banana. Tipsarevic, 28, was playing in only his second quarterfinal in 35 career Grand Slam tournaments. He reached that round in New York a year ago, too, but stopped playing because of a left leg injury while trailing By Howard Fendrich Associated Press NEW YORK Fourth-seeded David Ferrer outlasted eighth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-3, 6-7 (5), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in 4 hours, 31 minutes Thursday to reach the U.S. Open semifinals for the second time. Ferrer trailed 4-1 in the last set, but in the next game, Tipsarevic slammed to the ground while chasing a drop shot and stayed down for a few moments.

Tipsarevic later had his right thigh taped up. Ferrer, also a semifinalist at Flushing Meadows in 2007, has won four consecutive five-setters and is 17-9 overall. When the match ended on Tipsarevic's backhand into the net, Ferrer raised his arms, then knelt near the baseline. The weary foes met at the net for a hug. "I don't have words," said Ferrer, who reached the semifinals at the French Open in June.

"It Spain's David Ferrer reacts as he advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament. PETER MORGANAP was a very emotional match." Might have been the best of these two weeks so far, filled with twists and turns and plenty of theater. Ferrer next will play defending champion Novak Djokovic or 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro for a spot in Sunday's final. Djokovic and del Potro were scheduled to play the last men's quarterfinal Thursday night.
