Maintenance and Operating Cost of Branch Told Cost of maintenance and operation of the Montezuma branch of the Rock Island railroad between Muscatine and Jawa Junction would greatly CXcoed the anticipated revenue from the line, should freight traffic be resumed, representatives of the company testified at a hearing being conducted by the interstate commerce commission in the city hall here today.

The Rock Island is seeking permission to. abandon the linc. which has not been in operation nad bed; about 10 miles west of since a wash out destroyed the Muscatine, last March. Services Proposed. In an amendment to their original application for abandonfent, the road proposes to furnish freight service to Lone Tree by operation.

of a local freight train on the Burlington to Cedar Rapids line over the branch between Nichols and Lone Tree. The freight at serves Nichols, and if the application is granted, Lone Tree would receive the same service as Morning Sun, Conesville, Wapello, Nichols and other small towns along this portion of the line, railroad officials said. Witnesses for the company testified at the hearing that it would be more cconomical to operate from Nichols to Lor.c rather than over the present route. One of the principal it was stated, would be the elimination of maintenance on the Iowa river bridge. No bridges would need to be crossed on the Nichols -Lone Tree route, it was pointed out.

Costs Estimated. Company representatives estimated that the round trip cost over the six mile stretch from Lone Tree to Nichols would be from $10 to $12. and that the yearly maintenance cost would be about $3,000. The hearing, being conducted bezore W. J.

Schutrumpt as presiding examiner, was recessed at 12:30 p. m. and was scheduled to he resumed at 2 p. m. Opponents of the proposed abandonament were planning to open their testimony early in the afternoon.

Testifying for the applicant railroad this morning were H. H. Siddall, assistant statistician; R. C. Davidson, assistant freight and traffic manager; W.

H. Kelly, superintendent of the Rock Island division: C. C. Cunningham, suporintendent of the Cedar Rapids division. and W.

E. Heimerdinger, district maintenance engireer. W. F. Peter was present as attorney for the railroad, J.

L. Behrens as representative of the Brothers Sand and: Gravel company of Muscatine; John C. De Mar, Des Moines, representative of the Iowa railroad commission, and William R. Hart. representalive of the Lone Tree business men's association.
