Dinosaurs died out because they had a brain so small that it weighed only a few ounces, and they were unable to cope with brainier competition. Sorrow and sadness were written into the records of 1937 as Death, the Grim Reaper, touched many homes in the community. Prominent citizens, promising youths and tiny children alike were summoned during the past 12 months. Chandler, 49, Mus- George M.Wittich Funeral Home Traces History Back Many Years The George Wittich Funeral Home, today one of most modern and complete funeral establishments in this section of the state, traces its history back over a span of 70 years. Milestones in the history of the firm record the continual improvements and developments. The practice of taking care of the dead was first started in Muscatine about 70 years ago, in 1867, by. W.

Wittich, father'of George M. Wittich, senior member of the present firm, and Christen Kegel. They located in a building in the 100 block on Iowa avenue where they mad. all caskets by hand. Operated Casket Factory.

Later, another partner was taken into the firm" which, was then known as Wittich, Kegel and Wienker. These men started one of the first casket and furniture factories in the state at a site which is now occupied by the Y. M. C. A.

This partnership continued for several years. Later Mr. Wittich started up by himself in the profession at 209 East Second street: It was at this location that George M. Wittich first attained an age where he could assist his father in the directing of funerals and in the construction of caskets. The elder Mr.

Wittich several years later took into the business another partner, J. B. Mark, father of George B. Mark and J- W. Mark of this city.

The partnership moved to a location at 219 East Second street, where it continued in business for many years, Father and Son Associated. When it was 'dissolved, Mr. Wittich again went into business by himself, with the assistance of his son. A short time later, father and son became partners, and at the death of the senior Mr. Wittich, George M.

Wittich became proprietor' of the business. The firm was known as the Wittich Funeral Home lor many years until in 1932 when the name was changed to the George M. Wittich Funeral Home. At the opening of the year, 1937, another major step in the history of the establishment was recorded when Floyd A. Downey and: Thomas both licensed embalmers and experienced in the profession, became partners with Mr.

Wittich. Notable improvements, have been made to the home within recent years. The interior has been remodeled and refurnished. Exterior changes have also been made. Bereaved confident in the knowledge of the courteous and efficient service and attent-on which, their needs will receive, have the advantages of a private family room, a tastefully- appointed parlor and a commodious chapel.

Organ Installed. A major improvement made during the past year was the installation of a new Wicks organ in the chapel in October, which adds to the church-like effect for the conducting of funeral services. The George M. Wittich. Funeral Home provides another service for the clubs, societies- and other organizations of the city in providing a weekly "Calendar" which appears in The Journal, listing meetings and other events on the schedule for the coming week.

This service is free to those who desire to take advantage of it. Mr. Wittich, the senior partner of the firm, was of the first funeral directors to see the needs of the public, and as early as 1907 operated a funeral home which provided a place for the repose of departed loved ones. He is one of the first registered embalmers and funeral directors in the state of Iowa, receiving certificate No. 13 on Aug.

5, 1898. It is reported that there is only one director now living who has a smaller registration number than that of the Muscatine man. Mr. Wittich was graduated from the Western College of Embalming, one of the first colleges of embalming in the nation. With a long record of progress behind it, as evidenced by its constant improvements to keep abreast of the times, the George M.

Wittich Funeral Home today may point to a record equaled by few funeral establishments in the state. G. Maisenbach, 84, 24 frank William Folsom, 67,1 307 West Sixth street. Muscatine. Noerenberg, 27, Granville Drury, Muscatine.
