The committee, based in Cambridge, said it delayed its decision until today because the Commerce Department report on the gross domestic product showed that the economy finally had surpassed its pre-recession peak. That means any future slump will be considered a new recession rather than a continuation of the old one.

The Commerce Department said economic output grew at a 3.4 percent annual rate during the July-September quarter, not quite as strong as earlier estimates but still the best since 1988. Meanwhile, in a separate report considered a good sign for the economy next year, the department said businesses plan to increase their investment spending on new equipment and buildings by 5.3 percent in 1993. If realized, that would be the biggest increase in four years. Continued from page 1 and the project then can start He said administrators have investigated pursuing construction using the "design-build" approach, which was used to build the DeKalb Park District's Haish Gym and some Northern Illinois University buildings. In theory, the process cuts down on fees by having the contractor do the designs instead of a separate architect, reducing the number of firms involved in the project, McCormick said.

McCormick said design-build appears unsuitable for the Huntley project Although he has never used it, McCormick said he has been told the approach works well with construction of buildings that are going to stand on their own, not space that will be closely connected to other buildings. "I don't necessarily oppose design-build as a process," McCormick said. "I don't have a problem with it. But I'm not sure it would work all that well at Huntley." The project will add a multipurpose room, which will double as a gym and lunchroom-kitchen area, according to plans. Plans call for the lunch area to be moved up from the basement to the new space, creating room for more classrooms.

She said federal requirements on wheelchair-accessibility will cost the district money. "It's difficult to rebate (life-safety) money to taxpayers, knowing you're going to have to expend those monies." Fasbender said. He was described as wearing a large red Washington Redskins jacket, blue jeans, white tennis shoes and a black ski mask over his face. The robber left on foot, Berke said. DeKalb police and the FBI are seeking any information they can from anyone who was in the area around the time of the robbery or anyone who believes they may have information about the robbery. Call the DeKalb police non-emergency number, 756-1421, Crime Stoppers, 895-3272 or the Rockford FBI at 968-0715. "All information will be treated confidentially," Berke said.

The March 3 robbery of the United Federal Bank has not yet been solved, Berke said. Berke said there had never been a bank robbery in DeKalb before mat That also was an armed robbery, he noted. It does not appear that the two robberies are related because the physical descriptions of the two men differ, Berke said. Police and the FBI are still working on the first robbery. said, can be me person's social security Dumber or a special number assigned to the animal through me registry.

"It's one more thing to help identify a dog if it gets into a shelter or research facility," Meziere said. She said research facilities legally cannot use animals that have ID tattoos. She said she is trying to inform local animal shelters and veterinarians that they should look for such tattoos when an animal comes into their facilities. By Dave Skidmore Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) The nation's economic output during the July-September quarter registered its best showing in nearly four years, Continued from page 1 Somonauk school districts said they have not made any life-safety fund transfers.

Those superintendents said there are no plans to transfer the funds before the state law takes effect The Sycamore School District this month moved out $578,000 of life-safety funds, according to Mary Fasbender, executive director for business and personnel. The transfer included both interest and "proceeds" money left over from life safety projects, Fasbender said. She said the district had conducted an architectural review showing all violations of the life-safety codes have been corrected, which under state provisions to be nullified Jan. 1 allows thcidistrict to use proceeds for other purposes. The funds will help cover costs to build four new classrooms at the junior high school, Fasbender said.

The Sycamore school board's options for use of the funds included paying back debt Fasbender said. Continued from page 1 licenses, and firearms, Vesta said. The illegal employment of aliens has a serious economic impact on the county, Vesta added. He estimated there are 25-30 people working illegally in a combination of factory labor and food service jobs in me area. "We estimate up to 30 individuals are working." Vesta said.

"We've been told some of them are working from 80-90 hours per week. That obviously affects jobs that other people could have." Vesta said tome employers may have hired job applicants who they knew did not have legal working status in the United States. "We know of situations that indicate more serious problems, where employers knowingly hired (illegal) workers," Vesta said. "la tome cases, the workers are churning many (lrpendrnti. and may be paying very little in taxes." "We have not yet reached the end uus nveattfsnon, vesta mm.

"The community needs to be aware of what's going on. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates there are something like 5 million illegal aliens in the country. So we can put two and two together and know it is also happening elsewhere."
