liSSPbsii 'JY Ml -Pk Gets a Golf Course THE LONG CULOTTE OF CORDANA 8" 9 GB 'A Game That Teaches Discipline' Anamosa Reformatory By William Simbro THE Men's Reformatory at Anamosa is not becoming a country club. Far from it. However, the 600 inmates will be able to take off a little of the edge of prison tedium by playing a round of golf inside the reformatory walls, beginning next spring. It all started when Mr. and Mrs.

Douglas M. Conway of Ankeny read a Picture Magazine story by Nick Lamberto, describing the many community and prison betterment projects of the active Reformatory Jaycees chapter. The Conways, who happened to have an old miniature golf course on hand, learned that the inmates yearned for one. They donated it. Transporting the course, laying concrete foundations for each approach and hole, painting and repairing the course, leveling, graveling and landscaping took up 3,200 man-hours of inmate time and 254 hours of donated time by staff members.

All work was done on free time, after the men's regular work shifts. Nine inmate weightlifters lugged an 1,800 -pound bird bath 100 yards from its previous site to form the centerpiece of the course. Hauling of 27 yards of ready-mix concrete, 16 tons of crushed stone and 12 tons of pea gravel to the course and removal of 84 tons of dirt from the course were all done by wheel barrow. There's such a soft, lady 1 ST" "5 f5T5w4 Warden Charles H. Haugh said that not a penny of tax money went into the project.

Costs have come from Jaycee projects and contributions. The miniature course is ready for play, with one exception. Some 300 yards of indoor-outdoor type carpet is needed for the course. Present Reformatory Jaycee funds won't take care of the $500 needed and tax money can't be used. If the money can be raised, play on the course will begin in April.

A game of miniature golf may seem like a commonplace to those "outside." But the sight of the course adds an amazingly bright touch to the drab surroundings of the reformatory "yard." Warden Haugh is understandably concerned lest anyone think he is running a country club. "Golf is a game that teaches discipline," Haugh said. "You have to take turns, play fair and abide by the rules and regulations. Only those in good standing will be eligible to play. This provides an added little motive to adjust well.

Good adjustment is habit-forming." Haugh said the project has created great excitement among the inmates. "They're all asking when it will be ready for play." The warden observed that now 600 men may sit and watch 10 men play basketball in the gymnasium. "Out here anybody can pick up a putter in his free time and be a participant." Haugh praised the dedication of the Reformatory Jaycees, who currently are ranked as the top Jaycee chapter in their region. Heading up the golf project was inmate John Gacy of Waterloo, who contributed 370 man-hours to it. A total of 67 Jaycees, 24 inmates and 19 staff members helped out in the project.
