July 30, 1981 DES MOINES REGISTER UC BEST wy THURSDAY'S mm Fmr.iE time By MARK HAINEY Kaetttor TV EdMr Do we expect too much from TV? Can we really expect a lineup full of fun things to watch every evening? Probably not Despite the wealth and talent available to the networks, there isn't really enough of either to go around. As NBC's new chairman, Grant Tinker, noted recently, there aren't enough really creative, innovative people producing television to create an all-quality lineup. Tinker ought to know. As head of MTM, he has made some of the best shows offered on the tube. And though the networks make plenty of money, there's con- :33 7iOO 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 HE WOIABC I Tic Tac I Mork and Bosom I Barney I Taxi 2020 Dough Mindy I Buddies MiBer I KCCi-CBS Odd Waltons Magnum, P.I.

Luckily, there are Thursday nights, one of the few remaining nights of quality television. Yet even tonight's TV might be a tad better. We're too far into the summer doldrums for much relief. And frankly, tonight's cable TV offerings are not nearly as interesting as we might hope for, either. Still, let's be grateful for what we get.

On ABC at 7, we get "Mork and Mindy," which is not a favorite of this column. Still, tonight's episode is noteworthy since Mork and Mindy get to meet the famous comic Robin Williams. Home Box Office, meanwhile, is offering one of CTint Eastwood's lesser efforts with "Bronco Billy." Eastwood plays the owner of a Wild West show; Sandra Locke plays an heiress and he becomes involved with her. At 7:30, a good bet is IPBN's "Iowa: This Weekend" with Jarrett Day as host. Among the segments planned is Day's instruction in the art of shooting snapshots.

Day (who is no great shutterbug) and the show's producers thought there wasn't enough instruction in such photography. And they're right. This segment illustrates how the show has increased in practical value over last season while also raising the entertainment level considerably. And, Day, as this column has said repeatedly, was a brilliant choice for host At 8 p.m., the best bet for everybody but "Barney Miller" addicts is NBC's movie, "California Gold Rush," starring Robert Hays. Hays plays writer Bret Harte, who arrives at Fort Sutter just in time for the gold rush and just in time to see the effects of gold upon people's behavior.

At 11, WGN in Chicago offers Sidney Poitier in "A Raisin in the Sun." And on WOI at 11, Rita Moreno guest stars as Rita Capkovic on "The Rockford Files." Ja4 NRC links death of man to radiation poisoning What do these Avon best sellers have in common? radiation. "If you expose a population to 400 rads, you would expect about half of them not to survive," Seyfrit said. He said the agency had believed Crofut was recovering. His death was "somewhat of a surprise for us." Crofut had been hospitalized intermittently since January.

He was admitted to Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa on June 1 and was in intensive care isolation because of infection, a hospital spokesman said. An autopsy was scheduled. Gibbon said be had not determined whether he would take any legal action regarding Crofut's death. "If it came out of the New Mexico work, it would be one thing. If it came out of Henryetta, it would be something else," Gibbon said.

"He denies he had anything to do with that unit (in Henryetta or knew anything about it." Gibbon said it was possible Crofut could have "come into contact unknowingly" with the stolen Iridium 192. caused by exposure to radiation between Dec. 15 and Jan. 10. He had last worked with sources of radiation in October 1980 when he was employed by a Houston pipeline inspection firm near Lovington, N.M., Gibbon said Wednesday.

Karl Seyfrit director of the NRC regional office, said exposure of the magnitude suffered by Crofut is "extremely rare." "I'm not aware of any death that is directly attributable to a radiography source," Seyfrit said. He said there were a "couple of instances" of death from radiation exposure "back in the early days of development of the A-bomb." NRC tests indicated Crofut was exposed either to 356 rads of Iridium 192 or 405 rads of Cobalt 60 gamma ITULSA, OKLA. "I've never seen anything like it in life," said Crofut's lawyer, i Richard Gibbon. "It would make you i sick at your stomach." The source of the exposure remains i under investigation, The Nuclear Regulatory Commis- sion had investigated the theft about Dec. 30 of an industrial radiographic device from a locked pipeline inspection company truck parked one-half mile from Crofut't home. I After Crofut first was hospitalized on Jan. 22, the capsule of Iridium 192 i turned up on the porch of another ra-i diographer'g home in Henryetta.
