RICE COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS TO CONTINUE The Alvin rice growers were hosts for the annual meeting of the Texas Rice Promotion Association on March 8.

Barbecue or catfish' with spanish rice and the trimmings were on the menu for the fine food that was served. The program was in charge of Kern Tips, of the advertising agency, Wilkinson, Schiwetz a and Tips, Inc. of Houston who gave a report of the activities of the past year. New were elected and the program for the coming year was mapped out. It was decided to continue the rice cooking demonstrations, a sample of which was held at Dube's in Katy recently.

Also rice recipes have been featured in the' newspapers. This has created such an interest thruout in rice cookery that the association has decided to continue such demonstrations.

KARISCH Karisch Announces For County Attorney The Times is authorized to announce the candidacy of C. W. Karisch for the office of County Attorney of Waller County, subject to the action of the Democratic Primary of July 26th. In this connection Mr. Karisch states: I wish to take this means of announcing that I am a candidate for the office of County Attorney of Waller County.

As many of you know, I have been practicing law in stead for more than two years and am grateful for the many friendships it has been my privilege to make. I feel that we have one of the best in the State, I am proud to be a part of it and would consider it indeed an honor to serve as your County Attorney, a position customarily held by young lawyers. If elected to serve as your County Attorney, I promise to give you my best. I shall conduct the office with utmost fairness and consideration for everyone; cooperate, with the other law enforcing officials in enforcing the laws of this State, and furnish other County Officials legal assistance when requested to do so. I feel that I am well qualified to serve you capably.

I hold degrees from the University of Texas in Law and in Business Administration. In both the School of Law and School of Business Administration, ranked in the upper quarter of my class. I am a member of the State Bar of Texas, Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and the Waller County Bar I am a veteran of World II, having served three years in the Army Air Force, which service included duty in Okinawa and Japan. I am thirty years of age and I am married. My wife is the former Ruth Schmidt, daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. John H. Schmidt of the Monaville community. We live in Hempstead and. are members of the Methodist Church.

In the course of my campaign I shall endeavor to see each of you personally. I realize, however, that the County is a large piece of territory to cover in four months and if I fail to contact any of you, I asaure you it will not be intentional. I humbly ask that you elect me to serve as your County Attorney, an honor which you have bestowed upon most of your young attorneys of the past. Although bruised and sore Mr. W.

C. Stockdick Sr. is getting along some better after having been -knocked down by a Brahman calf Saturday afternoon, Bill West (Cherokee MOVIE INDIAN TO BE KATY F.F.A. SHOW FEATURE Big Bill West, Cherokee Indian, who is an accomplished movie actor, is scheduled for an after lunch performance on the grounds, Sat. March 22 at the Katy Fat Stock Show and Rodeo.

Big Bill, whose name is Bill De Leon West is a former AllAmerican football player under Pop Warner. He was with Jim Thorpe at Carlyle 42 years ago. Ten years later he went west and was on the first Wonder Team at U. C. at Berkley under Andy Smith.

In 1937 he was the only man in football history to return to college after 20 years and play football again. He has appeared in such films as "Samson and Delilah," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "Four Horsmen" and many others. You will want to see and hear Big Bill West, the Indian Chief at the Katy F.F.A. Show, Sat. afternoon.

Every thing will be ready by Friday for the opening of the Ninth Annual Katy F. F. A. Fat Stock Show. 1:00 p.m.

Judging of Boys steers, Hogs, Fat Poultry and breeding cattle. Mr. J. M. Schrum, former instructor of animal husbandry Texas A.

M. College, will judge the steers, pigs, lambs, and beef cattle. Mr. Schrum is now Farm Manager of Sugarland Industries. Mr.

J. Seward, vocational agriculture teacher at Luther Burbank School in Houston, will judge the poultry. Mr. Justus Smith, agriculture teacher at Humble, will judge showmanship and grooming of boys animals. Mr.

Dan Clinton, county agent, will be- in charge of the Junior Dairy Show. We do not have word at this time as to who will judge in this division. The trophies and pennants that will be given away at the Fat Stock Show are on display in the show window at the Katy High School. Drop around and take a look at this beautiful display. 7:30 p.m.

Fore, insurance executive, of Houston, will make movies for the American Cancer Society to be used in any way that they may see fit to help present and future patients who may need encouragement and courage to assent to operations to remove infected larnyx and vocal cords.

Howard underwent such operations in November of This is the big day of the F. F. A. Show. Many out of town visitors are expected, including buyers, and boosters of the show.

The day will start with a super parade (from all reports). Many civic organiations and business establishments are giving thought to a float for the parade, and we are happy to hear of at least 6 bands who will take part. Wild Bill West, the movie Indian, will ride in the parade. 9:30 a.m. Parade.

11 a.m. or immediately following the parade the Rodeo Queen Contest will take place on the Rodeo grounds. 1:00 p.m. the Cherokee Indian Chief, Bill West will entertain in the auction ring. 2:00 p.m.

the Auction Sale of show animals and poultry will begin. 7:30 p.m. the Rodeo with all finals in Rodeo Queen Contest and all rodeo Contests. Van Scroggins, chairman of the Cutting Horse Contest, informs us that he has already received 8 entries in the cutting horse contest and by the time the books close he is expecting as many as 12. Mr.

Oscar Kemp is furnishing the cattle for this contest. Judges in the Cutting Horse Contest are Mason Hoberaker and Leon Locke. These will be two big days of one of the largest local F. F. A.

Shows in the United States, Plan to be there, and be a booster of your local Future Farmers. SEE PAGE AD for COMPLETE SCHEDULE of SHOW Services Held for Mrs. Lona Elizabeth Rheman, Sunday Mrs. Lona Elizabeth Rheman, 79, died suddenly at 9:20 p.m. on Friday, March 14, at her home in Brookshire.

She was born: in Brown County, Texas, Mar. 16, 1872, the daughter of Robert and Mae Lona Trogden. In Austin, Texas on Sept. 27, 1887, she was married to Casper John -Rheman. They moved to Brookshire in 1892 and she has made this her home since.

Her husband preceded her in death, having passed away Jan. 13, 1946. She leaves to mourn her death three daughters, Mesdames Florence Wells, Maud Patty, and Ollie Brookshire, all of Brookshire; three sons, Clarence of Austin, George, and Casper Rheman of Brookshire, one brother Trogden, a sister, Mrs. Mary Agnes Wagner both of Austin, 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Grandma Rheman WAS quiet, sweet housewife and mother who reared all of her six children.

Her chief interest was flowers. She loved them all. Funeral services were held at the Brookshire Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6 on her 80th birthday, with Rev. J.

M. Hays and Rev. Larry Stokes officiating, assisted by the Baptist and Methodist choirs. Burial was in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories. Pallbearers were grandsons, Geo.

Rheman, Stanley Rheman, William Rheman, Tommy Rheman, Lloyd Rheman, Louie Halbison, Jack Baily and Joe Dozier. year. Through exercises, and with the aid of an artificial voice box; he is the art learning of speech again. He hopes to be able to talk entirely without the artificial box before long. Dr.

J. L. Harris, his physiclan, called him last Sunday and asked that he come to New Her-, man Hospital to see a patient just recently having had this same operation, Howard plans' to go again to show him what can be done. Mr. Jack Fore, owner of the 'Jack Fore Insurance Agency in the Bankers Mortgage Building, Houston, underwent this same operation five years ago, and todays carries on his thriving business without artificial aid of any kind.

Howard feels that he the has done much to help him in process of learning to talk again. These two fellows hope that through these movies the American Cancer Society may be able to do much good for patients who will need to overcome the obstacle of talking without any organs of speech..
