BROWN, PUBLISHER AMD PROPRIETOR. TriCDunucc bell, lons distance 38 I LLL lUilLO THE; HARRISON The Kentucky election is still unde-added, officially although every one knows that the republican ticket is elected by a good majority. i IP. it be true, 4a alleged by the that Congressman Griffith has promise the postoffice at Columbus to J. K.

Mapab, in the event of his re-elec- 'tion and democratic! success on thena-itoal ticket, Mr. Crriffith has made a and one that will hurt him in his campaign. Not because he has promised it to Mr. Marsh bnt because he has promised it to any democrat. If It were known that so important an office were already promised it would 'certainly have the; effect to Jtlienate 'other friends and supporters from him.

THE POOR ASYLUM. The last act of the democratic board of, county commissioners is character- istic of the majority of that body. After the grand jhry, whose sworn duty it was to examine into the condi tion of the county asylum, had made the examination and reported its condition to the court, it was urged upon commissioners to make an inquiry and see that the wrongs pointed out by the grand jury were remedied. They turned a deaf ear and let the matter go on from' week to week and month to month, until is just about out and then Wertz and May go down to the county asylum, and for what purpose? Not to examine into the matters pointed out by the grand jury, but i to see if they! couldn't find out something against John Ott, a former superintendent, to; offset the derelictions of Coff man as found by the grand jury; -j So it can readilybe seen that Wertz and May did not make their visit to investigate the management of the county asylum by Coffmari and to ascertain the truth of the gran'd jury's report and to nee that the. wrongs existing in the management were remedied, but they went there upon tne solicitation of Coff man to trump up something against John Ott to break the force of the grand jury's finding against Coffman, simply and solely because Coffman is a democrat.

One! need only to understand this thing to see the littleness, the ness and the partisanship of Wertz and MayJ No wonder Henry Harris -would have! nothing to do' with it. Why do they turn their investigation from exist-: Ing wrongs to something that is past and gone Suppose! John Ott may have done some things that are not right, does that justify Coffman in carrying on the asylum in the manner found by the grand jury We do not believe a word of the alleged charges against OtC i We believe that they are wholly trumped up for thef purpose above indicated. But granting that Ott might have been guilty of wrongs in the administration of the county asylum, does that justify Coffman? and May in their conduct about the Orphans' Home as well as about jthe county poor asylum have wuwu point mejr amiwuuuB ij ouutcxh the interests of the ounty to politics. No onei expected any thing better of who is the -least fitted for a wunty Icommisssonei" of any man who has served on the board in thirty years, 'but it was expected that May was big enough! and broad enough, and sensible enough tol not let politics control I his actions as commissioner. But the people have been greatly disappointed in him, and they find him ready to let politics control his actions in important matters that greatly concern them.

Why do Wertz and May go down there just at the close of Wertz" term? Why have they delayed the matter until now? And what has John Ott's administration to do with the present lollolMI MM 11 I mo ONE CENT EACH. Wilder for Vice Prf aldent. At the annual reunion of jthe old Persimmon Brigade, held at Indianapolis, Sept. 20, 1899, resolutions were unanimously passed, pledging the brigade to stand by and work for and) secure the nomination of some meiiber of the brigade to stand at the head of the state ticket as the rapublican candidate for governor. No name was decided upon at the reunion, but it left to the members to select a name! The Per-eimmon Brigade is rich with material and it is a difficult task to pick out one from among so many worthy comrades. Bnt one must be found who is of the peonle, and who knows what it is to ecrn his bread by the sweat -of his face.

But when the selection is made it will be done. I There is quite a sentiment among the Persimmon Brigade in fajvor of that gallant commander, Ge4- John T. Wilder, of Tennessee, commander of the famous Wilder Brigade, for vice president on the republican national ticket in 1900, and they hope the boys of the Wilder Brigade will take the matter up and see that their old commander gets the nomination, anil they can count on the hearty support cf the Persimmon Brigade. i Olorlons News i Comes from Dr. D.
