(Reglaier Staff Writer.) LINCOLN, the usual amount of homecoming interest in today's Nebraska-Pittsburgh game, but most Corn-husker fans are lookingahead to next week's football contest with Oklahoma. That's because It appears now that Nebraska may have to beat Oklahoma. If It hopes to go to the Orange Bowl New Year's day. As it now stands Kansas State, Nebraska's principal threat, has to beat Iowa State today and Colorado next week presumably an easier assignment than beating Oklahoma this or any other year to win the Miami trip. Along with this discomforting Nebraska outlook is the fact that the Cornhuskers are facing an aroused' Pitt outfit as the favorites before a critical assemblage of alumni this afternoon.

Coach Bill Glassford also finds himself in another predicament. Injuries have thinned out his reserve supply so much that he's been forced to draft backs Jon McWilliams and Sylvester Harris for duty as ends. Pittsburgh can't gain much notoriety in whipping Nebraska, but the Panthers can force the Cornhuskers to show all their stuff before Oklahoma's scouts today, and could swell Glass-ford's: casualty list beyond repair for next week's date. Pit holds a 12-3-3 edge in the series. After its faltering start Pitt has come along fast under its fill-in coach, Tom Hamilton, Sooner Defense in in of its i.vk my KANSAS STATE.

2 olo. A s. tl 21 Wyoming; 13 7 Missouri 3A 7 Nebraska .1 20 Tulsa 13 0 Oklahoma 21 2 Kanaaa 53 Draka It By Bill Br son. (Reglstar Stalf Wrlur.) MANHATTAN, KAN. A losing finish for Vince Di-Francesca's first season as Iowa State football coach is forecast today, a result that probably would keep Kansas State on the preferred list for an Orange Bowl date.

One Chicago handicapper has predicted a "five-star special" one-point victory for the hustling Cyclones. lie represents a trifling minority. Kansas State is generally favored by two touchdowns. Homecoming and a prospective New Year's Day engagement are strong incentives for the Wildcats, whose' 53-18 victory over Drake last week was their sixth in eight "tries. Bill Meek'a speedsters have won two and lost two in the Big Seven.

They need two more victories and some co-operation from Oklahoma. The Sooners, conference leaders but ineligible to return to the Orange Bowl, play Nebraska (3-1) next week. A Cornhusker loss would give Kansas State a chance to tie for second at 4-2. Chance of Upset The Wildcats would have priority on the bowl trip be cause they upended the Huskers, 7-3. Iowa State, lacking Kansas State's manpower, has hope of catching the Wildcats on an off day.

Some observers think the Kansans might take the Cy clones too lightly as they look ahead to the climactic game with Colorado next week. The- Cyclones have impressed their followers with an unbreak able -spirit in the face of discouraging odds. They'll have nine seniors eager for an em phatic farewell flourish today. Two of the seniors probably will be limited to part-time duty, however. Ofteff-injured Barney Alleman, the nation's ninth-ranking punter, sprained an ankle early this week.

Guard Weldon Thalacker suffered I shoulder injury in last Satur day's 40 0 loss to Oklahoma. Tidd Stays Home-Replacement for the 195' pound Alleman at right end is Harold Potts, 163-pound Junior. Thalacker is scheduled to start, but line coach Alex Agase thinks he'll need frequent relief, A tenth senior, halfback Kim Tidd, has been on the injury list for some time and didn't make the plane trip with the squad Friday. There is help for the Cyclones, though, In the return of halfback Bruce Alexander, who has recovered from the fracture of an ankle bone. Jerry Finley, who became father this week, has replaced John Breckenridge as starting quarterback.

After a workout at Ames Friday morning, DiFrancesca also revealed that he will open with tackle Ralph Brown and guard Herb McDermott, both seniors, instead of soohomores Don Schutee and John Murphy. Back in action for Kansas State are massive lineman Chuck Zickefoose, 216, and left tackle Len Legault, 215, Their conspicuous presence gives the Wijdcats an average weight ad' vantage of 14 pounds per man in the line. Burkett Seeks Mark. That's a lot of beef to clut ter up Max Burkett'a path to an Iowa State rushing record for one season. The fullback from Rhinelander, needs 49 yards to break Bill Chaun-cey's mark of 544, set in 1949.

Max has averaged 62 yards a game this season, but Oklahoma restrained him td a mere nine last week. DiFrancesca quartered his squad in nearby Topeka Friday night after a noon flight from Des Moines. The Cyclones will come here by bus this morning for a game expected to lure 20,000. SOX, YANKS TALK TRADE CHICAGO, ILL. (iP) Frank Lane, general manager of the Chicago White Sox, said Friday night he talked trade wtth George Weiss of the New York Yankees "but there is 'nothing definite as yet." Lane and Weiss discussed playerg for hours Friday and expect to meet again next week in Chicago.

"We were close on some deals," said Lane, "but then that's usually the margin which prevents a deal." Lane would not disclose names of players discussed. IOW A STATE. s. i. st.

2S 12 Tulsa 0 20 41 34 Detroit 1 By Nick Ijiinberto. (RegiaUr Staff Writtr.) NORMAN, OKLA. Oklahoma, the reigning Orange Bowl champ, will determine the worthiness of one of the aspirants to that throne when it meets Missouri here today. Missouri, a team that keeps sticking its foot in ttiedoor leading to 'second place in the Big Seven, will in turn test the Sooners' right to their seventh straight conference title. Oklahoma, winner ef 16 straight football games and unbeaten in 45 straight conference games, can cinch a share of the 1954 Big Seven title with victory today.

Missouri, with a 2-1-1 record the Big Seven and 3-3-1 overall, is trying to keep alive its slim hope for an Orange Bowl trip. For this to happen, the Tigers Coach Don Faurot would have to beat 'Oklahoma today and the Sooners in turn would have to beat Nebraska next Saturday while Missouri is beating Kansas and Kansas State, the third Orange Bowl candidate, is losing to either Iowa State or Colorado. Since Oklahoma can't repeat trip to the Orange the second place finisher in the Big Seven will go. The lighter and faster Sooners are heavily favored to beat Missouri. have incentive, too: They are unbeaten and untied in seven games this season.

Burris' Hands 1 TV IaT j' jliic ues momes ounaay Register is a treat for Jl ALL the family every Sunday Morning! BtilL hanging in the balance. Qne involves Luther, which has been the state's only unbeaten team since early October. The Norsemen will try to make It a' perfect year at Decorah this afternoon against Loras. The other two big develop, ments will revolve around the Iowa Teachers-South Dakota State contest at Cedar Falls. Hinging on thin outcome are: 1.

Ralph Capitani' bid to repeat as the national total nffenae champion, and 2. Morningslde' hopes for It first outright North Central Conference titl since J92S. Capita ni will-'have quitie a bit to say his aim. Morn-Ingside, on the other hand, will have nothing to do but serve as innocent But if one succeeds, it may prove quite Vital to the other. Morningaide will land all alone atop the North Central standings only if Capitani can direct Teachers to a victory over South Dakota State.

A 5-1 Record." If this happens then Morning-tide takes sole possession of the championship with a 5-1 record. The Maroons ended the season by beating South Dakota State In a wild 39-34 game last week. But If the Tutors lose, then South Dakota, State pulls into a title tie with Mornlngside. Teachers currently Is and will he shooting to deadlock the Jackrabhit for second place while handing the crown to Mornlngside. There will be quite? an individual duel between Capitani and South Dakota State quarterback Jerry Welch.

Both need a certain amount of yardage today to accomplish different objectives. Needs 142 Yards' Capitani, the 145-pound senior fullback from Des Moines, must pass and run for no lew than 142 yards if he is retain the national total offense crown he won last year. The pressure was applied to him when Omaha University's Bill Engelhardt piled up 277 yards in a game Thursday to end his season with total offense mark of 1,645 yards. Capitani now has 1,504. Capitani also is out to he the first small college player ever to win two national titles In one season.

He seems certain of winning the passing crown already having 19 completions for 1,315 yards. As for South Dakota State's Welch, he must pick up 87 yards on the ground or in the ir against the Tutors for a Jackrabbit record. He now has 1,016538 rushing and 478 passing. Besides his duel with Capitani, Welch and Tutor end Dick Beetschr will have a side issue to settle the league scoring Beetsch is the leader with 48 points. Welch is second with 43.

It all adds up to quite a game at Cedar On the surface Luther's task appears to be an easy one in eeking 'its ninth straight victory an1 first unbeaten season In the school's history. Loras has won, only one of seven games this fall-But this I an old rivalry and always spirited one. Luther can't count this one In the bag, particularly since the Norsemen haven't defeated Loras since 1041. The se Football Today COLLEGE. Big Ten.
