DES MOINES, IOWA, SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 1957. n7 V7 fl uu 1 Lb LI Ex-Iowa Ace Wheeler Edges Tabori in Thrilling Mile Finish at 4:06.9 A Ml A WW I 17,000 WATCH MORROW RUN tV I I jf 'ri )m fi rf ,1, Hfc ''y Y'-T, VV (1 A "--p'H A -P )r 'i? A Missouri Hurdlers Beat U. S. Mark By Bert McGrane Wonder if it wasn't the gaunt, driving figure of Ted Wheeler, gunning down the stretch inches ahead of Laszlo Tabori, one of the world's first 4-minute milers, that left the most lasting impression as a most memorable Drake Relays program ended Saturday? It's hard to put a finger on any man or any event as a feature when you have a parade of stars who hammer down 10 major records in one afternoon, toss in a couple of new marks for Iowa colleges, and leave the scene of the two-day assault with a total of 13 important new marks. That wasn't all.

They beat down one Amerjcan collegiate record, tied the almost untouchable 100-yard dash time and in several events produced multiple fractures of records when as many as five ran under the old mark. Sunshine alternated with a light cloud cover, winds were noticeable but unimportant in the computations, the track was trigger fast following Friday's heavy rains, and a crowd estimated at 17,000 watched one of the great shows in the 48-year string of running and jumping carnivals. :13.8 in Hurdles In the very first collegiate event Willie Stevens, the latecomer from Tennessee A. and steamed through a flight of hurdles in 13.8 seconds by tar the tastest ever run in this area. That was the tipoff on the condition of the track and the mood of the contenders, perhaps, for from that moment on there was hardly an event that KING AND QUEEN Olympic star Bobby Morrow, world's fastest poses with Drake Relays Queen Carlotta Joan Hagen after sensational r' formance here Saturday.

Morrow equalled 100-yard dash record of 9.4 onds and anchored Abilene Christian to new marks in 440 and 880 relays. 8TAFP THOTO BY JACK BF.lNTuN With 220 to Plan Pays Off By Maury White It took Ted Wheeler about twice as long to recover from his narrow mile victory over Laszlo Tabori at the Drake Relays Saturday as it did to score it in 4 minutes brought anything short of a spectacular climax. They've been shoofing ot records on the Drake track for almost a half-century. They never had a better day. When they checked the wreckage of the book after the meet they found that the field had battered down the records in the university 440 and half-mile relays, in the high hurdles, shot put, javelin throw and hop, step and jump, in the college mile run and the open mile run, and the college two-mile relay.

Collegiate Mark The most lasting impact of all, possibly, resulted from RELAYS Cond'nued on Page Three 1 Drake Relays Saturday. 4 :08.4 set by famed Wes timed in 4:06.9. Tabori minutes. That's what It ta! Tall Theodore went into the race against the refugee Hungarian, who has done 3:59, with the idea of trying to win it. "I never run for time," he said. "Tabori doesn't have the speed that I do. I figured if I could hold on until 220 yards from the end, I could outkick him." It Worked The strategy was good by inches. No one could have asked for a better finish.

The early pace was too slow, Wheeler said. But he liked the finish! This was his fastest win ning time. Last June, Ted did 4:04.7 at Compton, and finished fifth. It was the third Drake Champs Special Events 1iO Mlh hnrdlr Willie ven. TennM A.
