It may be that commissions' hands are tied through big city and state politicians, who re-quently get instructions by pipe line the Palermos, the Carbos and others. I HAVE been told and have also read that Carbo holds almost daily meetings in a Manhattan cafe, where matches are made and are handed along to the International Boxing Club.

But I couldn't prove it I doubt if anyone could. Another thing that is puzzling, Is that James D. Norrls, a millionaire with many business interests, and who is head of the B. would have any dealings with the characters who now control the leading boxers. PERHAPS some good will come out of that Philadelphia decision whereby Johnny Saxton, managed by Palermo, was handed the middleweight championship in a recent televised bout. It was that scrap that' precipitated the disclosures now being printed, although there is nothing new in them. So far as I can see, the hawk Is a bird that has few of any noble qualities, so why apply the name to Iowa athletes? They're still "Hawkeyes" in my book.

Arnold Johnson ft nally bought the Athletics Thursday, but the next big question in this year's most lantastio sports story is instead of south" if a Vacancy develops in the league. At any rate, there was no sentiment on the part of any director to lower the classification from A ball if Denver or Omaha is lost.

Talk of A-l. In fact, it was learned that the directors discussed advancing the classification to A-L one step above Class A. It was believed, that if the current members remain the same, the league wiU be boosted to A-l. There were only two official actionsvtaken Thursday: Awarding the 1954 Western League trophy to Denver for winning the pennant, and adopting the use of the Spalding baseball in 1955 for the ninth straight year. It was not announced officially, but there was some discussion of selling cut-rate season tickets at Wichita for next year and reportedly was approved, over some opposition, for Wichita only.

Work on the1955 schedule was the last order of business Thursday night, with the directors planning to continue their meeting at Houston, during minor league meeting Nov. 29 to Dec. 3. Believes Denver To Be Drafted LOUISVILLE, KY. CPV-Pree-ident Ed Doherty of the American Association indicated Thursday that Denver may be the draft choice of the league if the Philadelphia Athletics are moved to Kansas City.

He said the association directors will meet "not later than the middle of next week" to consider the problem. Until I hear from the American League that Kansas City is being drafted, we can't do anything definite," Doherty added. He said that Denver, in the Class A Western League, offers the best territory for Association realignment. "And Denver is the best baseball city In its circuit." Disciplined Texan Back on First Team AUSTIN, TEX Texas tackle Herb Gray, demoted last week in disciplinary action, has regained a starting berth in Saturday's game with Baylor, Coach Ed Price said Thursday. Gray, a.pre-season all-America candidate, was one of the nine Longhorns ousted from the Athletic dormitory for violating training rules after Texas had dropped its second Southwest Conference game in losing to Rice.

Johnson has given assurance he will take any steps the league wishes' in regard to Yankee Stadium after his 3'i million-dollar purchase of the A's.

Harrldge declined comment on whether the Chicago industrialist would be asked to relinquish his position as landlord of the Yankees. The price of 3 million for the A's is reached by adding a $1,200,000 mortgage and other debts of approximately $800,000 to the price of the Mack stock. Johnson said one million dollars more will be set aside to help buUd the last place Athletics into a first-division team. Really True? Parents' Day. Against this Impressive gang of visitors, Coach Warren Gaer will field his freshmen-dominated squad which has won only once in seven tries, but has re-tamed a keen enthusiasm for football. As an added inducement, it will be Parents' day and many of the Bulldogs will have sup port Trom home. Five seniors are winding up home careers, too, although only four will play, Guard Jim Hanahan, reli able and steady guard for three years, will miss the game altogether because of a knee Injury. The other seniors tackle Ray Brown, guard Dick Paschal, center Lloyd Wasmer and back Floyd Acker are all expected to start, although Paschal may not last long.

Back Injury, This former East Des Moines star, who mads a sterling comeback this year after missing last season with injury, hurt his back last week against Iowa Stats and is not in top form. Arnold Johnson, the Chicago real estate millionaire, purchased the A's Thursday. All that remains for the Kansas City shift is American League approval. Bad News. When informed that Johnson had completed the deal Thursday, another Johnson, Colorado Governor-Elect Edwin C. who is president of the Western League, commented: "That's very bad news.

The situation has already created a great deal of confusion in the Western League and In baseball generally. "I want to emphasize that we have nothing to go on yet but rumors, and any official action from the Western League' will have to await official action by the American League and the American Association." But in informal discussion, most other Western League officials agreed with Holland that more than likely the Class A circuit would remain intact. Point to Memphis. Some pointed to the fact that Memphis of the Class AA Southern Association is one of the foremost cities being mentioned to fill Kansas City vacancy if the American League approves the A's shift. The league's directors' were not going along blindly with this assumption, however." They're beginning to lay the ground work should Denver or Omaha be drafted and thus leave them with a big void to fill.

The general opinion of the directors seemed to be that if Denver or Omaha goes to the American Association, the Western League will try at least one more year in Class A. Some said they'd be in favor of reducing to a six-team circuit, while others felt the addition of another city and continuing with eight teams would be better. Cedar Rapids.
