i SECTION SPORTS cciistcr Des Moines, Iowa, December 21, 1975 Copyright, Des Moines Register and Tribune Company More research heeded to curb growing NFL injury rate REGISTER REPORT By Buck Turnbull ft Yy iN 111 i 7" jj Wk '-'MM ik. On one recent Sunday afternoon five National Football League quarterbacks limped or were carried to the sidelines with crippling injuries! As the regular season winds to a close today, Jim Plunkett could not play for New England, Bob Griese for Miami, Billy Kilmer for Washington, Len Dawson or Mike Livingston for Kansas City, Bill Munson or Greg Landry for Detroit. Jim Hart at St. Louis, Steve Spurrier at San Francisco, Ken Stabler at Oakland, Ken Anderson at Cincinnati, Charley Johnson at Denver, rookie Steve Bart- kowski at Atlanta all have been hurt this season. They're all quarterbacks, some of the biggest names in the game, but they're just a few of the NFL players who have been banged up in an unbelievably bad year.

Why? Are humans becoming too big and fast for this violent sport? Is artificial turf at the root of the prob-lem, as many players claim? Is better equipment needed? "I believe we definitely must do more" research to answer some of those questions," said Jan Van Duser, backer Wally Hilgenberg of the Minnesota Vikings, whose home games are played on natural grass at Bloomington's Metropolitan Stadium. "The shoes are lightly constructed," said Hilgenberg, "and until they're de-v 1 properly you'll probably see many more foot and toe injuries. "The strained toe that Bob Griese has you never heard of that on grass. "My main gripe about artificial turf is that if you're not used to playing on it TURNBULL Please turn to Page Six the body are the most susceptible." THE STUDY, done by Stanford University, reached some fairly obvious conclusions. Running backs and defensive cornerbacks are most frequently hurt.

Linebackers also have a higher than average injury rate. Knees are the No. 1 problem area (the Kansas City Chiefs have had 15 knee injuries this season, the Detroit Lions 10), and legs account for about half of all injuries. "We have 162 players on the injured reserve list," said Van Duser, "more than ever before. So I believe it is time we delve deeper into the bio-chemical aspects of the game.

"First, there are bigger, faster and stronger people coming into pro football every year. "SECOND, THE majority of playing surfaces through-, out the league are artificial, yet these fields are not the same. The field at Miami, for example, is different from the new one at Detroit (the stadium at Pontiac, "Third, there is so much variance in equipment. KEN ANDERSON BOB WALLY ED ORIESE HILGENBERG PODOLAK director of NFL player personnel, from the league headquarters in New York City. "We recently completed a five-year study on injuries, attempting to discover when and how they occur, what positions are the most dangerous, and what areas of "Much more work must be done in the shoe area to find what is best for the synthetic fields." That's a valid point, agrees former Iowa line Some players don't even wear what's available to protect them such as cornerbacks not wearing thigh or knee pads because they want to get that extra step.

Christine Grant was sitting in her office the other day, talking about the financial problems of college athletics. The women's athletic director at Iowa said she had a couple of ideas that could relieve the money crunch: The maximum amount of an athletic scholarship should be reduced to tuition only. The number of scholarships should be "drastically" reduced especially in football. Now, before you label Grant anti-men's sports and anti-Big Ten football, let her finish. "Maybe the women can help the men," she explained.

"It's unlikely that, once we feel the ramifications of Title 9, men will be able to give out full-ride scholarships and women won't. "My concern is that the nation as a whole cannot afford to duplicate full-ride scholarships for women. Grant said she doesn't think it's such a bad idea for athletic departments to get their money from a "central" fund at their school. "Understand, I am not against gate receipts. But I would like to see them funneled into the general university fund." Football receipts support most other sports at Iowa and in other "big-time" programs.

"There's a tremendous amount of pressure on the men," said Grant. "They have to draw large crowds at the football games to support the other sports. "Maybe it's time we began asking if athletic departments in this country are funded the right way. "If state legislatures would accept the philosophy that athletes are part of the total educational program and funded them accordingly, it would take the pressure off." OTHER ATHLETIC directors do not agree with Grant's proposals. "I like full-ride scholarships," said Betty Werner, women's director at Drake.
