WOODWARD Donald Burkhart, 89 ZWINGLE Marcella Bruns, 78. WATERLOO, IA. The bankrupt Rath Packing Co. of Waterloo and a Minnesota corporation have reached a tentative agreement on the reorganization of Rath as a holding company that would acquire other businesses, it was disclosed here Friday. But Rath President Lyle Taylor said the agreement with the Mayfield Corp.

of Minneapolis will not result in Rath's meat packing plant here being reopened, nor will the agreement affect the federal bankruptcy court's liquidation of Rath assets. The agreement must be approved by a federal bankruptcy judge. Taylor provided few details about Mayfield, saying only that the compa- Scrip machines to provide cash at QuikTrip By JAMES R. HEALEY Register Business Writer QuikTrip Corp. is expanding its use of scrip machines to Des Moines after a year-long test in Iowa City.

The devices are similar to automat ic-teller machines activated by bank cards, but users do not get cash direct ly from the machine. Instead, it hands out a slip of paper printed with the amount the user wants, and that scrip is swapped for money with the conve nience-store clerk. The "Quik Tellers' will be installed at all 26 Des Moines-area stores by mid-August, the company said. Brenton National Bank of Des Moines is the sponsoring institution, which means the bank gets a fee every time a non-Brenton debit card is used in one of the machines, according to Richard Stachon, Brenton's marketing director. He said the scrip system is cheaper because "you don't have to make the machines bulletproof for se curity" since there's no cash inside.

Thus, the tellers won't accept deposits, either, as normal automated tellers do, although they will allow users to check their balances and to transfer funds between accounts. The scrip system will ease Quik- Trip's problem of having too much cash on hand, Stachon said. "QuikTrip is an amazing cash accu mulator tens of thousands of dollars in a 24-hour period," he noted. "If they bring all that to the bank, there is a fee for handling, and this will cut their handling fee. And, if there is less cash on hand, he said, "that reduces their vulnerability to crime." The system "allows for impulse buying," Stachon noted.

"You can go in there and buy $30 or $40 worth of merchandise without having to have your checkbook or cash, as long as you ve got your bank card, he said. QuikTrip has operated six scrip machines in the Iowa City area for a year, and the machines average 3,000 trans actions per month, Stachon said. Some near the University of Iowa campus reach peaks of nearly 6,000 monthly transactions during the school year, he said. There are three other scrip units in Iowa City not operated by QuikTrip, Stachon said. QuikTrip has operated the machines in Wichita, and Tulsa, for nearly two years, Stachon said.

Taylor said Rath is attractive to Mayfield because the deal is a way for the privately held Minneapolis compa- ny to acquire a corporation that already has stock and stockholders, rather than creating a new corpora- tion and finding buyers for its stock. The deal would benefit Rath cur-' rent shareholders and unsecured cred-: itors, Taylor said, because the reorganization offers them the possibility that they could receive some reim-' bursement which would be virtual-1 ly impossible without the reorganiza- tion. Taylor cautioned that the deal is in its early stages and could fall through'. He said details of the proposal are pected to be submitted to the bank' ruptcy court in about a month. i Rath, at one time one of the nation's leading meatpackers, went into bank: ruptcy court in November 1983 following several years of losing money.

Attempts to save the company: through its sale or the infusion of new money failed. Sioux City TV station KCAU sold once more By DAVE RHEIN Register TV Editor KCAU-TV. the ABC affiliate in Sioux City, was sold Friday for the second time in less than a year. William Turner, longtime president and general manager of KCAU, con- firmed the station nas oeen purcnaseu by Citadel Communications which is owned by Philip J. Lombardo of Bronxville, N.Y.

Terms of the sale were not announced, but sources close to the transaction said the purchase price was about 14 million. The sale is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Com-' mission. Until last year, KCAU was part of the Forward Communications group of six television stations, four radio stations and one newspaper. But last December, the Forward properties were purchased by Wesray Communi-1 cations of Morristown, N.J., which is owned in part by former Treasury Secretary William Simon. The total sale price for that purchase was million.

Turner, who will continue to be the; chief executive at KCAU, said it was Wesray's intention all along to sell some of the former Forward stations; He indicated one other Wesray TV station will be sold, along with all four rai dio stations includingister station KWLO-AM and KFMW-FM in Water-loo. 1 RAG BR A I AUGUST 2 ONLY SUN 1 MON I THE I WED I THURS I FRI ft 1 -fr 1 ft I I ft I 2 DES MOINES, IA W.V.
