t4-Alfdno, (Ja.) Upptr Oil W«dnft*dey, F«b. 21, 1968 Railroad to cut 4 depots Chicago Northwestern Railroad proposes to operate depot service in Al- (ona for nine points in Iowa and one in Minnesota, The proposal, if accepted, would mean closing of depots now operating at Rlngsted, Burt Bancroft and Fenton. Notices have been posted in the depots stating that if there are no objections the railroad Will close the depots March 5 and remove the depot buildings. Objections must be sent to Interstate Commerce Commission in Des Moines on or before March 1. The closings would affect depot services to Irvington, Burt, Bancroft, Ledyard, Fenton, Lone Rock, Ringsted, Halfa, and Dolliver in Iowa, and Ceylon, Minnesota. At present, according to Vic Johnson, Ringsted depot agent, railroad business at Ceylon, Dolliver and Haifa is handled at Ringsted, Ledyard business is handled at Bancroft and Lone Rock business at Fenton. The Algona depot handles Irvington business and the Burt depot handles only Burt business. "Rumors are that an agent and clerk at Algona will handle business for all of these towns," reports Johnson. "In some cases, this would involve a 100-mile round trip by. the agent," he adds. Notices were posted Thursday. Johnson says the closings are part of a company plan for the whole state. "The railroad plans to keep open about 27 depots out of some 60 now operating In Iowa," he says.
