, (1e.) Upper D«t Moinet W*dnt*day, fcb. 41, 1968 Iowa Electric UP To Build Nuclear Plant CEDAR RAPIDS, IA. f Feb. 20- Sutherland Dows, chairman of the board of Iowa Electric Light and Power Co., today officially announced the consummation of plans to erect Iowa's first nuclear power plant for generation of electricity, In Linn County, about eight miles northwest of Cedar Rapids, Inasmuch as Iowa Electric Light & Power directly serves the communities of Fenton, Lone Rock, Burt, Rlngsted, Armstrong, Cylinder and Rodman in this general area, the project has a direct bearing on future electrical service for those communities. Algona's municipal plant is also tied into a power line of the same company, as an emergency measure if and when required. It will be the largest power plant ever built in Iowa. It will be a $100,000,000 project, which will employ as many as 750 people at one time during the construction peak, and is the largest single industrial project ever undertaken in the state. After completion, about 50 well-trained men will be needed to operate the plant. It Is to be located on a 480-acre site In gently rolling, wooded country about two miles north of Palo, In Linn county. This facility is scheduled to be in operation by December, 1973 and, against the possibility for future requirements, the site will be readied for a second nuclear unit of similar size when practical and necessary. The initial unit will employ a light water cooled and moderated boiling water reactor, designed and manufactured by General Electric Co. Referring to the new plant as a "clean" operation, Mr. Arnold pointed out that, since no particles such as fly ash or sulfur dioxide (commonly emitted from fossil-fueled plants) will be produced, the new nuclear plant will offer no atmospheric pollution problems and be a "good neighbor" in every sense of the term. Completion of the unit will increase Iowa Electric Light and Power Company's electric gen- _ erating capacity by more than 90 ' percent from the present 600,000 kilowatts. Average annual use of electricity by the company's residential customers is now the highest in the west central region of the United States. HONEY C. R. Wilkins of Ida Grove finally had cold enough weather this month in which to have a large hollow tree cut down which was filled with honey and wild bees. It was estimated that at least 200 pounds of wild honey was hauled away. nnnintiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiinrmiiininiirnniiiin/uiiiiiiiiiii!
